As a trusted source of information about a good night’s rest, we get questions all the time about pillows and how to find the right one for you. To be truthful, your preferred go-to sleep position plays a large part in the quest for the best pillow, because at the end of the day, your pillow’s job is to keep your head, neck, and spine all in neutral alignment as well as support the natural curvature of your spine. That’s why we suggest sleeping with a latex pillow as it provides the best support. If you’ve been thinking about trying a latex pillow, we’ve answered our 5 most frequently asked questions from our customers to help make your decision easier.
1. What is a Talalay latex pillow?
Talalay latex is a newer form of latex production that is known for its pressure relief properties and consistent feel. This makes it a more advanced and superior form of latex, producing a denser, close-conforming feel, while still remaining cool thanks to its breathability properties. Unlike some other latex pillows which are generally made from shredded latex, the Talalay latex pillow is made from an eco-friendly Talalay latex which is formed into a medium-firm, solid pillow shape. This one-piece filling provides a somewhat firm feel yet is still very responsive. The ‘high’ version is great for side sleepers while the ‘low’ version is best suited for stomach sleepers.
2. What is Talalay latex made of?
Latex sap comes from the rubber trees of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Thailand. Natural latex is extracted by carefully cutting the bark of rubber trees to allow the flow of a milk-type sap. Rubber trees heal quickly so the cut is non-damaging; it also eliminates the need to cut down a tree for latex extraction. Natural latex is heated at high temperatures to eliminate any allergens. Talalay refers to the process of latex where the latex is poured into the mould, partially filling it. The mould is then vacuumed to expand the liquid latex, filling the rest of the mould. The Talalay process is scientifically exact, with more air producing a softer latex and less air producing a firmer latex, which ultimately produces a consistent product time and again.
3. Do latex pillows soften over time?
No. Due to its structural integrity, latex has great longevity. Typically foam pillows will lose their support much faster.
4. How long does a latex pillow last?
A lifespan of a pillow has many variables, including the manufacturer, the care provided to it, and the environment the pillow is kept in. Latex is made from reliably sourced, quality materials; it’s also easy to care for. Due to its pasteurization process, before it reaches the moulding stage, latex is eliminated from any synthetics and allergens. Therefore, your average latex pillow will last three to four years, provided it is properly taken care of.
5. How often should you replace your pillow?
Many experts will suggest switching out pillows every 1 to 2 years to ensure your pillows remain supportive, stay clean, and are free of allergens. You’ll know you will need to replace your pillows when you’re waking with a sore neck or can no longer find a comfortable sleeping position. If your pillow is sagging, developing lumps, or you’re noticing excessive yellowing, then it is also time to replace your pillow.
If after this you’re feeling that a latex pillow is not the option for you – do not worry! There’s still microfiber, memory foam, down-filled and feathered, and many more options available.
