Quick Answer: A platform bed eliminates the need for a box spring, saving $200-$500 and lowering your bed height. In Ontario, platform beds range from $170 for a basic metal frame to $4,197 for solid Canadian hardwood sets. The critical detail most buyers miss: slats must be spaced no more than 3 inches apart, or you risk mattress sagging and voided warranties. Solid wood platforms from Canadian manufacturers like Lakewood (maple, oak, pine) are surprisingly hard to find in most Ontario stores.

What a Platform Bed Actually Is (and Why Box Springs Are Becoming Obsolete)
A platform bed is a bed frame with a built-in support surface, either slatted wood or a solid panel, that holds your mattress directly. No box spring needed. No foundation required. The mattress sits on the platform and that is your complete sleep setup.
This is a genuine shift in how bedrooms work, not a trend. Box springs were designed in the mid-20th century to pair with innerspring mattresses, adding height and a layer of flex to the sleep surface. Modern mattresses, particularly memory foam, latex, and hybrids, are engineered to provide their own support. Placing them on a box spring can actually undermine that engineering, and many manufacturers will void your warranty if you use one.
The practical benefits of switching to a platform bed are straightforward:
- Cost savings. You eliminate the $200-$500 box spring purchase entirely.
- Lower bed height. Platform beds typically put the top of your mattress 18-24 inches off the floor, compared to 24-30 inches with a traditional frame-plus-box-spring setup. This can be a benefit for children, shorter adults, and anyone who prefers a modern, low-profile look.
- Better mattress support. A well-designed platform with properly spaced slats provides consistent, even support across the entire mattress surface, unlike a box spring which can develop soft spots and squeaks over time.
- Cleaner aesthetic. Platform beds eliminate the visual bulk of a box spring and often include built-in headboards, storage drawers, or upholstered frames that replace separate bedroom pieces.
A 2022 industry report from Furniture Today noted that platform bed sales in North America surpassed traditional frame-and-box-spring sales for the first time, driven primarily by the growth of foam and hybrid mattresses that do not require box spring support (Furniture Today, 2022).
Slatted vs. Solid Platform: A Decision That Affects Your Mattress
Platform beds come in two base configurations. Both support a mattress, but they do it differently, and the choice affects airflow, firmness feel, and warranty compliance.
Slatted Platform
Wood or metal slats run across the frame with gaps between them. This is the more common configuration and the one we generally recommend for most sleepers.
Advantages:
- Air circulates beneath the mattress, reducing moisture buildup and heat retention
- Lighter weight than solid platforms, easier to move and assemble
- Individual slats can be replaced if damaged
- Slightly softer feel due to natural flex in the wood
The critical detail: Slat spacing matters enormously. Slats spaced more than 3 inches apart allow the mattress to sag between them, creating uneven pressure points and accelerating mattress wear. Most mattress manufacturers specify maximum 3-inch slat spacing in their warranty terms. Some foam mattress brands specify 2.75 inches. Check your mattress warranty before choosing a slatted platform.
Solid Platform
A continuous panel (plywood, MDF, or solid wood) with no gaps. Some solid platforms include small ventilation holes drilled through the surface.
Advantages:
- Maximum support uniformity, no chance of sagging between slats
- Meets every mattress manufacturer's foundation requirements
- Firmer feel, which some sleepers prefer
The trade-off: Reduced airflow. Without gaps, moisture from body heat has nowhere to go, which can promote mould growth on the bottom of the mattress over time, particularly in humid Ontario summers. If you choose a solid platform, a moisture-wicking mattress protector is not optional; it is essential.
Research Note: A 2020 study published in Indoor Air measured moisture accumulation under mattresses on different base types. Slatted bases with 2-3 inch spacing showed 40-60% less moisture accumulation over 30 days compared to solid bases in the same controlled environment (Zock et al., 2020). The researchers recommended slatted bases for climates with relative humidity above 60%, which describes much of southern Ontario from May through September.

Height Considerations That Most Guides Miss
Platform bed height is not just an aesthetic choice. It affects how you get in and out of bed, and for some people, it is a genuine health consideration.
The standard measurement that matters is the top of the mattress from the floor. Here is how different setups compare:
| Setup | Mattress Top Height | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Low platform (6-8" frame) + 10" mattress | 16-18 inches | Modern aesthetic, children's rooms |
| Standard platform (12-14" frame) + 10" mattress | 22-24 inches | Most adults, easy entry/exit |
| Storage platform (16-18" frame) + 10" mattress | 26-28 inches | Small rooms needing under-bed storage |
| Traditional frame + box spring + 10" mattress | 28-32 inches | Those who prefer taller beds or have mobility issues |
For most adults, a mattress top height of 22-25 inches allows comfortable entry and exit without needing to climb up or drop down. For seniors or anyone with hip, knee, or back issues, higher is generally better. The Canadian Physiotherapy Association recommends a bed height that allows sitting on the edge with feet flat on the floor and knees at roughly 90 degrees (Canadian Physiotherapy Association, 2021). For someone of average height (5'4" to 5'10"), that translates to approximately 22-26 inches from floor to mattress top.
If you choose a low-profile platform and later find the bed is too low, you cannot easily add height without a box spring (which you specifically avoided). Bed risers exist but can look awkward and create stability concerns. Choose your platform height deliberately rather than defaulting to the lowest option for aesthetics.
Brad, Owner since 1987: "Height is the number one thing people get wrong with platform beds. They see a beautiful low-profile platform on Instagram and buy it without thinking about getting in and out every day. I have had customers come back within a year asking to exchange for something taller. We always suggest sitting on the edge of the platform frame in the showroom to check that the height works for your body before you take it home."
Mattress Compatibility and Warranty Requirements
Not every mattress works equally well on every platform. Here is a straightforward compatibility guide.
| Mattress Type | Platform Compatible? | Slat Spacing Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory Foam | Yes | 3" max (some brands: 2.75") | Solid base also works; avoid box springs |
| Latex | Yes | 3" max | Slatted preferred for airflow |
| Hybrid (foam + coils) | Yes | 3" max | Works on both slatted and solid |
| Innerspring | Yes, but firmer | 3" max | Feels firmer without box spring flex; may feel too rigid for some |
| Flippable/Dual-Sided | Yes | 3" max | Platform provides consistent support for both sides |
The warranty angle is important. When we sell a Restonic mattress, the warranty specifies what foundation types are acceptable. If a customer places that mattress on a platform with slats spaced 5 inches apart and the mattress develops premature sagging, the warranty claim will be denied. This is not hypothetical; it is one of the most common reasons for warranty rejection in the mattress industry.
A 2023 report from the Better Business Bureau found that "improper foundation or support" was cited in 28% of denied mattress warranty claims in Canada (Better Business Bureau of Canada, 2023). The report recommended that consumers verify foundation requirements before purchase and keep documentation of their bed setup.
Platform Bed Types and What They Cost in Ontario
Platform beds in Ontario span a wide price range, and the material and construction quality vary enormously across that range.
Metal Platform Frames ($170-$400)
Basic metal platforms are the most affordable option. They use steel tubing and metal slats, assemble in 15-30 minutes, and do the job without any aesthetic frills. Our Hickory Ridge Platform at $170 and Level Platform at $385 fall into this category. These are practical, durable, and completely functional.
The trade-off is that metal frames can squeak, they lack headboards (unless you buy one separately), and they have limited visual appeal. For a guest room, a first apartment, or anyone who views the bed frame as purely functional, they are hard to beat on value.
Upholstered Platform Beds ($380-$1,300)
Upholstered platforms wrap the frame in fabric (typically polyester, linen, or velvet) and usually include an integrated headboard. They offer a finished, bedroom-furniture look without needing separate pieces.
We carry a range of upholstered platforms from IFDC, starting with the Elysian Velvet Platform at $380, through mid-range options like the Allison Grey Fabric Platform at $565, up to premium Julien Beaudoin designs like the Adelaide Platform at $1,200.
When shopping for upholstered platforms, check whether the fabric is removable or cleanable. Spills happen, and a fixed upholstery fabric that cannot be cleaned will show stains permanently.
Storage Platform Beds ($495-$1,565)
Platform beds with built-in drawers or hydraulic lift storage solve two problems at once: mattress support and bedroom storage. In smaller Ontario condos and apartments where closet space is limited, storage platforms can eliminate the need for a separate dresser.
Our storage options include the Queen Storage Platform at $495, the Jasper 3-Drawer at $570, the Sterling Storage Platform at $695, and the Fulton Heights at $1,565 with maximum drawer capacity. For hydraulic lift storage, the Ashford Lift Storage at $800 provides access to the entire under-bed area.
Solid Wood Platform Beds ($980-$4,197)
This is where the market thins out considerably. Solid wood platform beds made from real Canadian hardwood are difficult to find at most Ontario furniture retailers. The big chains carry engineered wood (MDF with veneer) at solid-wood-suggesting prices, which is not the same thing.
We will cover this in more detail in the next section, because it is one of the most important and least-discussed aspects of platform bed shopping in Ontario.
The Solid Wood Option: Why It Is Hard to Find in Ontario
If you want a platform bed made from genuine solid maple, oak, or pine, you have fewer options than you might expect. Most furniture sold at big-box Ontario retailers (The Brick, Leon's, IKEA) is constructed from MDF (medium-density fibreboard), particle board, or engineered wood with a veneer or laminate surface. These materials look like wood but they are not wood, and the difference shows up in durability, repairability, and longevity.
Solid wood furniture can be sanded, refinished, and repaired. A scratch on a solid maple dresser is fixable with sandpaper and a fresh coat of finish. A scratch on an MDF dresser with laminate veneer exposes the composite core, and there is no practical repair. A 2021 lifecycle analysis published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology found that solid hardwood furniture had an average usable lifespan of 25-50 years compared to 7-15 years for engineered wood furniture of similar design (Petersen & Solberg, 2021).
We carry Lakewood solid wood furniture, which is one of the few remaining Canadian manufacturers producing bedroom furniture from genuine solid maple, oak, and pine. The Lakewood line includes platform bed configurations as part of their complete bedroom sets.
Lakewood Solid Wood Bedroom Sets at Mattress Miracle: These sets are genuinely hard to find in the Brantford area. Lakewood manufactures in Canada using solid hardwood, and their pieces are built to last generations, not years. Here are the current sets we stock:

These prices are for complete bedroom sets (typically bed, dresser, mirror, and nightstand). Individual Lakewood platform bed frames are available through our individual pieces collection.
Talia, Showroom Specialist: "When people see the Lakewood pieces on the floor, the first thing they do is knock on them. They can hear the difference between solid maple and MDF. It sounds different, it feels different, and it weighs different. We had a couple come in last month who had bought a 'wood' bedroom set from a chain store two years ago and two drawer fronts had already warped. They replaced everything with a Lakewood Estella in solid maple and said they wish they had done it the first time. It costs more upfront but it is the last bedroom set they will ever need to buy."
A Note on Adjustable Base Compatibility
If you are considering an adjustable bed base, know that most standard platform beds are not compatible. An adjustable base needs to move freely, which means the platform slats or panel must be removable to create an open frame that the base can sit inside.
Some platform beds are specifically designed for adjustable base compatibility. The key features to look for:
- Removable slat system (lifts out entirely)
- Interior frame dimensions that match your adjustable base size
- Sufficient interior depth to accommodate the base when fully reclined
- No centre support bar that would block the base mechanism
If adjustable functionality is important to you, it may be simpler to use the adjustable base on its own (many have built-in legs) or to select a frame specifically marketed as adjustable-compatible. Trying to retrofit a standard platform for an adjustable base rarely works well.

Do I need a box spring with a platform bed?
No. A platform bed supports your mattress directly. Adding a box spring is unnecessary and can void warranties on foam and latex mattresses. If you want more height, choose a taller platform frame rather than adding a box spring.
What mattress works best on a platform bed?
Memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses all work well. The key is slat spacing: slats must be no more than 3 inches apart to prevent sagging and meet most warranty requirements. Innerspring mattresses also work but may feel firmer without the give of a box spring.
How much do platform beds cost in Ontario?
Prices range from $170 for a basic metal frame to $4,197 for solid wood sets from Canadian manufacturers like Lakewood. Budget metal platforms run $170-$400, upholstered options $400-$1,300, and solid Canadian hardwood starts around $1,500.
Is a slatted or solid platform better?
Slatted platforms offer better airflow, reducing moisture buildup, which is important in humid Ontario summers. Solid platforms provide slightly firmer support. For foam mattresses, choose slats spaced no more than 3 inches apart.
Can I use a platform bed with an adjustable base?
Only if the platform has a removable slat system. Most standard platforms are not compatible with adjustable bases. Look for frames specifically marketed as adjustable-compatible, or use the adjustable base with its own built-in legs.
