Kids & Baby Sleep, without the panic.

Every parent gets bombarded with sleep advice. Newborns sleep 14-17 hours, toddlers 11-14, teens 8-10. Choosing the right mattress, frame, and bedtime routine for each age makes a real difference. We've helped Brantford families since 1987 and this is the curated guidance, citing Canadian Paediatric Society guidelines where the science matters most.

How firm should a kids' mattress be?
Firmer than an adult mattress. Kids weigh less so a firm mattress provides better spine support without sinking. Avoid soft pillow-tops for kids under 12. The Canadian Paediatric Society (cps.ca) recommends firm flat surfaces for infants and toddlers.
When should I transition my toddler from crib to bed?
Most kids transition between 18 months and 3 years. Triggers: climbing out of the crib, potty training needing nighttime bathroom access, or outgrowing the crib mattress. A toddler bed (uses crib mattress) is the gentlest transition; a twin mattress with bed rails works for slightly older kids.
Are bunk beds safe?
Yes, when used per Health Canada standards: kids under 6 should not sleep on the top bunk, guardrails must be 12.5 cm tall, mattress thickness must not exceed the height of the guardrails minus 12.5 cm, and the ladder must be securely fastened. Check bolts annually.
What pillow size for a child?
Toddlers (2-4): no pillow or a very thin toddler pillow (10 x 14 in). Kids (5-12): standard pillow but with low loft (2-3 in). Teens: adult-sized standard pillow with loft matched to sleep position. The Canadian Paediatric Society advises no pillows for infants under 12 months.
How many hours of sleep does my child need?
Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours. Infants (4-11 months): 12-15. Toddlers (1-2): 11-14. Preschool (3-5): 10-13. School age (6-13): 9-11. Teens (14-17): 8-10. Adults: 7-9. These are National Sleep Foundation ranges endorsed by the Canadian Paediatric Society.
Are weighted blankets safe for children?
Only for kids over 5 years old, at 10% or less of body weight, and only if the child can independently remove the blanket. Never for infants or toddlers under any circumstances. Always supervise initial use.
