Teen Sleep, Canada

Teens need 8-10 hours of sleep but most Canadian teens get 6-7. The biology is real: puberty shifts the circadian rhythm 1-2 hours later, making teens naturally want to sleep at 11pm-1am and wake at 8-10am. School start times make this hard. Here's the honest teen sleep guide.

If your question isn't here, call our Brantford showroom at 519-770-0001 or stop in at 441 1/2 West Street. A real person answers the phone.

Why are teens so tired?
Two reasons: (1) they need 8-10 hours of sleep but rarely get it, (2) puberty shifts their circadian rhythm 1-2 hours later so they're not biologically sleepy until 11pm or later, even though school starts at 8am. The math doesn't work.
What size mattress for a teenager?
Twin XL (38 x 80 in) is best — same width as a twin but 5 inches longer, accommodating growth spurts. Some families pick a double or queen for teens who'll have the same mattress through university.
Should I take phones away at night?
Yes if possible. Blue light from phones suppresses melatonin and pushes bedtime later. Even more importantly, late-night phone use creates anxiety and FOMO that delays sleep onset. Charge phones in the kitchen, not the bedroom.
Can teens take melatonin?
Short-term yes (1-2 mg, 30 min before desired bedtime, for occasional sleep disruption like exam stress or jet lag). Long-term not recommended without a pediatrician's input — the long-term effects on developing endocrine systems aren't fully studied.
My teen sleeps 14 hours on weekends. Is that bad?
Catching up on sleep debt is normal but isn't ideal. Try to keep wake-up times within 1-2 hours across weekdays and weekends to maintain circadian rhythm stability. If your teen needs 14+ hours regularly, that's a sign of significant sleep deficit worth addressing.
