Baby Sleep, Canada

Newborns sleep 14-17 hours a day. Most don't sleep through the night until 6-12 months. The Canadian Paediatric Society's safe-sleep guidelines are the gold standard. We don't sell cribs but we help families pick the next steps. Here's the honest baby sleep resource for Canadian parents.

Questions, Answered

The baby sleep questions we actually get asked.

If your question isn't here, call our Brantford showroom at 519-770-0001 or stop in at 441 1/2 West Street. A real person answers the phone.

How many hours does a baby need to sleep?
Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours per day, split between night and naps. Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours. Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14. These are National Sleep Foundation ranges endorsed by the Canadian Paediatric Society (cps.ca).
When can a baby use a pillow?
The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends no pillows for infants under 12 months — they're a SIDS risk. Toddlers 18-24 months can transition to a thin toddler pillow (10 x 14 in, very low loft).
Should babies sleep on firm or soft mattresses?
Firm. The Canadian Paediatric Society explicitly recommends firm flat surfaces for infants and toddlers to reduce SIDS risk. Avoid soft mattresses, pillows, bumpers, or blankets in the crib for babies under 12 months.
Do you sell crib mattresses?
Not at our showroom — crib mattresses have specific Health Canada safety regulations and we focus on adult and kids' (twin and up) mattresses. We can refer Brantford families to reputable crib mattress retailers.
When should a toddler transition from crib to bed?
Most transition between 18 months and 3 years. Triggers: climbing out of the crib, potty training needing nighttime bathroom access, or outgrowing the crib mattress. A toddler bed (uses the crib mattress) is the gentlest transition; a twin mattress with bed rails works for slightly older kids.
