Is Your Baby Snoring? When to Worry About Infant Sleep Sounds | Mattress Miracle

Quick Answer: Occasional light snoring in newborns is usually due to normal congestion or leftover amniotic fluid. However, if the snoring is persistent, loud, or accompanied by gasping or pauses in breathing, consult your pediatrician immediately. These could be signs of enlarged adenoids or laryngomalacia.

Brad Grose, founder, Mattress Miracle, family owned in Brantford since 1997, with 40+ years in the mattress industry: "We have been helping Brantford families sleep better since 1997. Every customer gets personal attention, honest advice, and the kind of follow-up service you just do not get from big box stores."

Reading Time: 4 minutes

There is nothing more peaceful than a sleeping baby. Until they start sounding like a tiny chainsaw.

New parents in our Brantford showroom often ask Brad, our owner (and a father himself), "Is it normal for my baby to snore?" The answer is usually: "It depends on the sound."

Babies are noisy sleepers. They grunt, squeak, and whimper. But true snoring,a rhythmic, vibrating rattle, warrants a closer look.

The "Squeak" vs. The "Snore"

Normal Sounds:

  • Whistling: Usually dried mucus in the nose.
  • Gurgling: Saliva pooling in the back of the throat (they haven't learned to swallow perfectly yet).
  • Stridor (Squeaking): A high-pitched sound when breathing in. This is often laryngomalacia (floppy tissue), which is common and usually outgrown, but should be checked by a doctor.

Concerning Sounds:

  • Rhythmic Snoring: Consistent "sawing wood" noise with every breath.
  • Silence then Gasping: This is the hallmark of sleep apnea. Yes, babies can have it too.

Why Babies Sound Stuffy

Babies have tiny airways. A speck of dust that wouldn't bother an adult can block 50% of an infant's nostril.

The "Obligate Nose Breather"

Newborns instinctively breathe through their noses to allow them to feed and breathe simultaneously. If their nose is stuffed, they can't just switch to mouth breathing easily. This struggle creates noise.

Common causes include:

  1. Amniotic Fluid: In the first few days, they are still clearing fluid from birth.
  2. Milk: Regurgitated milk can sit in the nasal passages.
  3. Colds: Viral infections cause swelling.

Is the Room Too Dry?

In Southern Ontario winters, humidity drops drastically. Dry air irritates the delicate lining of a baby's nose, causing it to produce protective mucus. That mucus dries into crusts, creating a whistle or snore.

The Fix: A cool-mist humidifier. Aim for 40-60% humidity in the nursery. Do not use warm mist (burn risk). Also, ensure the crib mattress is firm and flat. A sagging mattress can cause the baby's chin to tuck into their chest, restricting the airway.

Crib Safety

Never put pillows or soft toys in a crib to "prop up" a snoring baby. This increases SIDS risk. If you need to elevate their head for a cold, place a rolled towel under the mattress, not in the crib.

Red Flags to Watch For

Call your pediatrician if:

  • The snoring happens every night, not just when sick.
  • You see retractions (the skin sucking in between their ribs or at the neck).
  • They sweat excessively while sleeping.
  • They sleep with their neck hyperextended (head tipped way back) to open the airway.

Can teething cause snoring?

Yes. Teething produces excess saliva. When this drool pools in the back of the throat, it creates a gurgling or snoring sound. This is usually temporary.

Should I use nasal drops?

Saline drops (salt water) are safe and effective for loosening dried mucus. Put a drop in each nostril and use a bulb syringe to clear it. Consult your doctor before using medicated drops.

Does my baby have allergies?

Seasonal allergies are rare in infants under 6 months. However, they can be allergic to dust mites or pet dander. Wash crib sheets weekly in hot water and keep pets out of the nursery.

Is snoring hereditary?

The anatomy that causes snoring (small jaw, large tonsils) can be hereditary. If both parents snore or have sleep apnea, the baby may be at higher risk for airway issues.
