Crib Mattress Guide: Safe Sleep for Babies in Canada

Crib Mattress Guide: Safe Sleep for Babies in Canada

Quick Answer: Crib Mattress Safety A crib mattress must be firm, flat, and fit snugly in the crib with no gaps. This is not a comfort preference; it is a safety requirement. Soft mattresses increase the risk of SIDS and suffocation. The mattress should not indent when you press on it. Standard crib mattress size in Canada is 27.25 x 51.625 inches. No pillows, blankets, bumper pads, or soft items in the crib. A waterproof, breathable mattress cover is the only acceptable addition. Budget $100-300 for a quality crib mattress. This is not the place to cut corners. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada's "Safe Sleep for Your Baby" guidance, babies should sleep on their back on a firm, flat surface with a tightly fitted sheet and nothing else: no pillows, loose blankets, bumper pads, or toys.

Health Canada Safe Sleep Rules

The Canadian Paediatric Society and Health Canada are clear: babies must sleep on a firm, flat surface. This means:

  • Firm mattress: When you press your hand on the centre and edge, the surface should spring back immediately. It should not conform to your hand shape. What feels uncomfortably firm to an adult is correct for a baby
  • Snug fit: No more than two finger-widths gap between the mattress edge and the crib frame on any side. Gaps create entrapment hazards
  • Flat surface: No inclines, wedges, or contoured surfaces. Babies must sleep flat on their backs. Inclined sleepers have been recalled due to suffocation deaths
  • Nothing else in the crib: No pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, bumper pads, or sleep positioners. A fitted sheet over the mattress is the only addition. Use a sleep sack for warmth instead of blankets
  • On their back: Always place babies on their back to sleep, for every sleep, until they can consistently roll both ways on their own

Why Firm Matters for Babies

Babies lack the motor skills and strength to reposition themselves if their face becomes pressed into a soft surface. A firm mattress keeps the airway clear even if the baby turns their head. Soft mattresses, memory foam, and pillow tops create suffocation risk because the surface conforms to the face rather than supporting it. What feels comfortable to an adult is dangerous for an infant. A baby's comfort on a firm mattress is different from an adult's. They do not need cushioning because they weigh so little that pressure points are not a concern.

How to Choose a Crib Mattress

Key Selection Criteria

Size: Standard Canadian crib mattress: 27.25 x 51.625 inches (69.2 x 131.1 cm), 6 inches thick or less. Measure your crib frame interior to confirm. Some cribs use non-standard sizes.
Firmness test: Press the centre and corners firmly. It should resist your hand and spring back. If it holds your hand impression, it is too soft.
Weight: Consider that you will be changing sheets (often at 3 AM). A lightweight mattress is easier to handle. Foam mattresses are lighter than innerspring.
Waterproof: Babies produce a remarkable amount of fluid. A waterproof mattress or waterproof cover is essential. Built-in waterproofing is most convenient.
Certifications: Look for CertiPUR-US (foam safety), GREENGUARD Gold (low emissions), or similar certificationsA peaceful baby wrapped in a blanket sleeps in a cozy crib, creating a serene nursery atmosphere. - Mattress Miracle Brantford. Babies spend 12-17 hours per day on this surface. Material safety matters.
Dual-sided (optional): Some crib mattresses have an infant-firm side and a toddler-slightly-softer side. Extends the mattress lifespan through toddler years.

Crib Mattress Materials

  • Foam (most common): Lightweight, affordable, firm when high-density. Ensure density is at least 1.5 lbs per cubic foot for adequate firmness. CertiPUR-US certified for low emissions. $80-200
  • Innerspring: Traditional coil mattresses. Heavier but durable. 135+ coil count is standard. Good airflow. $100-250
  • Organic foam/latex: Natural materials, fewer chemicals. GOTS or GOLS certified. More expensive but lowest chemical exposure. $200-400. Worth considering given the hours babies spend on the surface
  • Coconut coir/natural fiber: Natural, firm, breathable. Often combined with organic latex or wool. Premium price but excellent for chemical-sensitive families

Care and Maintenance

Keeping the Crib Mattress Clean and Safe

(1) Waterproof cover: Use a fitted, breathable waterproof cover under the fitted sheet. This protects against diaper leaks, spit-up, and drool. (2) Wash cover regularly: At least weekly, or immediately after any fluid exposure. (3) Check firmness: Over time, foam mattresses can soften. Check firmness every few months with the hand press test. Replace if it no longer springs back. (4) Never use a used crib mattress: You do not know its history, how it was stored, or whether internal structure has degraded. SIDS risk increases with used mattresses. Always buy new. (5) When to transition: Move to a toddler bed or regular bed when your child can climb out of the crib (usually 18-36 months) or reaches 35 inches tall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a memory foam crib mattress?

No. Memory foam conforms to shape, creating a suffocation risk for babies who cannot reposition themselves. Health Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society recommend firm, non-conforming surfaces only. Memory foam crib mattresses should not be used for infants.

Can I use a used crib mattress?

It is strongly discouraged. Used mattresses may have degraded firmness, hidden mould from fluid exposure, and unknown contaminants. Research shows an association between used mattresses and increased SIDS risk. A new crib mattress is $80-200 and worth the investment for safety.

When does my baby need a pillow?

Not until at least 18-24 months, and even then it is optional. Many toddlers sleep fine without a pillow until age 3-4. When you do introduce a pillow, choose a small, thin, firm toddler pillow. Adult pillows are too large and soft for young children.

My baby seems uncomfortable on a firm mattress. Should I add padding?

Never add padding, mattress toppers, or soft layers to a crib mattress. Babies are not uncomfortable on firm surfaces the way adults would be. They weigh so little that pressure points are not an issue. The firm surface keeps them safe. Use a sleep sack for warmth and comfort instead.
