Which Twin Bed Frame Is Right for You? Types, Sizes and Prices in Canada

Quick Answer: A twin bed frame holds a twin (single) mattress, which the Better Sleep Council lists at 38 x 75 inches. Beaudoin, a Canadian maker, builds its Level twin platform at 39 x 75. At Mattress Miracle in Brantford, twin frames run from $150 for a folding metal frame to $1,350 for an upholstered bed.

A twin bed frame is the base that lifts a twin mattress off the floor and decides how well that mattress is supported. In Canada, twin and single name the same bed. Twin frames come as platforms, metal frames, trundles, captain's beds, daybeds, bunk beds and upholstered beds. Mattress Miracle has sold twin beds in Brantford since 1997. The twin bed frames we carry range from a $150 folding frame for guests to $1,350 upholstered beds in your choice of fabric.

The first decision is support. A platform frame holds the mattress on its own deck or slats, so you buy no box spring. A traditional bed with side rails and no deck needs a box spring or a bunkie board under the mattress. Settle that before you compare looks or prices, because it changes the total cost. Our platform bed vs box spring comparison goes through cost, height and warranty.

Dorothy Balicki, Mattress Miracle: "On our delivery routes, the frames that come back to us with a complaint are almost never the solid wood ones. It is the very light metal platforms where a center leg was skipped or the slats were not clipped down. When our team sets a bed up, we put every center support in and check that the slats sit flush, because that one step is the difference between a bed that stays quiet and one that creaks within a month."

A twin XL bed frame is the longer cousin: same width, five inches more length, made for a 38 x 80 inch mattress (Better Sleep Council). We stock twin XL mattresses for that frame too. The two sizes do not swap. A twin mattress leaves a gap at the foot of an XL frame, and an XL mattress will not fit inside a twin frame with a footboard.

What size is a twin bed frame?

A twin bed frame is sized to a twin mattress, and the Better Sleep Council lists that mattress at 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. The frame itself is always a little bigger than the mattress. A bare platform adds almost nothing, while a bed with a headboard and footboard adds several inches of length. So measure the room against the frame's listed footprint, never the mattress.

Canadian sizes drift by about an inch. Beaudoin, which says its beds are made in Canada, lists its Level twin platform at 39 x 75 inches and its twin XL at 39 x 80. That extra inch gives a 38-inch mattress a little room at the sides, and it is normal. For the mattress side of the measurement, our twin mattress size guide covers inches, centimetres and thickness.

Size Mattress (Better Sleep Council) Platform (Beaudoin Level spec) Who it suits
Twin (single) 38 x 75 in 39 x 75 in Kids, guest rooms, daybeds and bunks
Twin XL 38 x 80 in 39 x 80 in Tall teens, dorms, one side of a split king
Double (full) 53 x 75 in 54 x 75 in One adult who wants room, or a small couple

The Better Sleep Council notes that 75 inches may be too short for some adults. If the sleeper is already near six feet, read the twin XL section before you buy.

Is a twin bed the same as a single bed?

Yes. A twin bed and a single bed are the same size in Canada: two names for one 75-inch-long bed. Our own product listings say "Twin" on one frame and "Single" on the next for exactly the same fit. If a listing gives two different numbers, trust the inches over the name. Our single vs twin measurement guide lines the two up side by side.

Types of twin bed frames

The table shows seven twin bed frame types Mattress Miracle stocks and what each costs today, using twin-size prices only.

Upholstered bed London, Lyon, Jane, Chelsea (Beaudoin) $1,195 to $1,350 Choice of fabric and footboard

Platform twin bed frame

A platform twin bed frame supports the mattress directly on a deck or slats, so you skip the box spring. The Level Platform Bed is our twin platform at $435. Beaudoin's spec sheet gives it a 13-inch total height and says no box spring is required. Our review of the Level platform bed covers the assembly and how it looks with a headboard.

Metal twin bed frame

A metal twin bed frame is the lightest and cheapest way to get a mattress off the floor. Our folding metal frame is $150 in twin, and its own listing says it is built mainly for occasional use, such as a guest who stays a few nights. For a bed someone sleeps on every night, we point people to a permanent frame instead. The trade-off with any light metal frame is noise if a centre leg is missing, which is exactly what Dorothy sees on delivery.

Wood twin bed frames

A wood twin bed frame gives a kids' room or guest room a warmer, furniture look than bare metal. Our Mission-style twins, the Budget Bed Frame and the Mission-style trundle bed in the table above, are built from MDF and wood veneers, according to their listings. If you want solid wood, call before you visit and we will tell you what is on the floor today.

Twin bed frame with storage: captain's beds

A captain's bed is a twin frame with drawers, a trundle, or both built into the base. The Captain Bed with Trundle and Storage is $680 and fits a pull-out twin and drawers inside the footprint of one bed. The Mariner captain's bed is $660 with a trundle. In a small room, this is often the piece that lets you skip a dresser.

Trundle and daybed twin frames

A trundle bed hides a second twin sleeping surface on casters under the main bed. Our trundle beds start with the Mission-style bed at $480 and the Aspen platform with pull-out trundle at $580. A daybed has a back and sides so it sits like a sofa during the day. The Vienna Velvet Trundle Bed ($895) and the Day Bed with Trundle ($900) both take a twin on top and a twin trundle below. See the full range of daybeds in our Brantford collection.

Twin over twin bunk beds

A bunk bed stacks two twin mattresses and frees the floor space a second bed would take. The Childrens Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed is $400 and the Single Over Single Bunk Bed is $800. Browse our twin-over-twin bunk beds to compare ladders and finishes. Health Canada's bunk bed safety advice is in the kids section below.

Upholstered twin bed frames

An upholstered twin bed frame wraps the headboard and rails in fabric, which is softer to lean on when you read in bed. Our Beaudoin twins, such as the London, Lyon, Jane and Chelsea, run from $1,195 to $1,350 depending on the footboard and fabric. The full set of upholstered bed frames shows every colour option.

How much does a twin bed frame cost in Canada?

A twin bed frame costs from $150 to $1,350 at Mattress Miracle, checked against our live catalogue on November 3, 2026. The spread follows the type. Folding and basic frames sit under $300, platforms and trundle beds land between $435 and $680, daybeds sit near $900, and upholstered beds sit above $1,195.

Price band (twin size) What it buys at Mattress Miracle
$150 to $300 Folding metal frame ($150), Budget Bed Frame in espresso, grey or white ($280)
$400 to $700 Twin-over-twin bunk ($400), Level platform ($435), Mission trundle bed ($480), Aspen trundle ($580), captain's beds ($660 and $680)
$800 to $900 Single over single bunk ($800), Vienna trundle daybed ($895), Day Bed with Trundle ($900)
$1,195 to $1,350 Beaudoin upholstered twins with Woodland or Absolute footboards

Delivery is part of the price, so plan for it. Bed frames check out for delivery in Ontario only. A bed frame order under $500 pays $80 delivery. Mattresses ship free. The Shop From Anywhere in Ontario page explains phone walk-throughs and how delivery is booked.

Does a twin bed frame need a box spring?

A twin bed frame needs a box spring only when it has no deck or slats of its own. The Level platform, the Budget Bed Frame and the Day Bed with Trundle all list mattress support. A rail-only frame or an older bed with side rails needs a foundation. Our Standard Box Spring is $129.99 in twin, in 2-inch, 5-inch or 7 1/2-inch heights, and you'll find it with our other twin box spring options.

The height choice matters on a twin. A thick mattress on a tall box spring on a tall frame can put the top of the bed higher than a child can climb into easily.

Twin vs twin XL bed frame: which one do you need?

A twin XL bed frame is five inches longer than a twin frame, at the same width: 38 x 80 inch mattress versus 38 x 75 (Better Sleep Council). Buy the frame that matches the mattress you own or plan to own, because the two never mix well. Our twin vs twin XL guide covers sheets and accessories for both.

  • A twin XL mattress will not fit inside a twin frame that has a footboard.
  • Without a footboard, it overhangs the end by five inches with nothing under it.
  • A twin mattress on a twin XL frame leaves a five-inch gap at the foot.
  • Our split king adjustable bases are two twin XL halves, so twin XL bedding and frames pair with them.

The Level Platform Bed comes in twin XL for $445. Adjustable bases in twin XL start at $349 for the Ergomotion Quest 1.0. The Level and our other twin XL frames are in the twin XL bed frames collection.

Talia Grose, sleep specialist, Mattress Miracle: "When a customer is buying for a teen who is heading to Laurier Brantford or out of town in a year or two, I always steer them to twin XL. The width feels identical, so the room layout does not change, but the extra five inches of length means the bed still works once they hit their full height. Buying standard twin and replacing it eighteen months later costs more than getting the right length the first time."

Twin beds for kids: age, height and bunk bed safety

A twin bed is the usual next bed after a crib. Health Canada gives a clear trigger. It says to move a child from a crib to a junior bed "when they can climb out on their own or are taller than 90 centimetres, whichever comes first." For that first big-kid bed, a low twin frame keeps the drop short. Our low twin bed height guide compares frame heights for small children.

Twin bunk bed safety: what Health Canada says

Health Canada's bunk and loft bed safety guidance lists safety rules to teach children: no children under 6 years old on the top bunk at any time, and only one person on the top bunk at a time. Before you buy, it says to check for guardrails on all 4 sides of the top bunk, even if the bed will be placed against the wall, and a securely attached ladder. It says the mattress should fit snugly against all four sides, and that the top of the guardrails must be at least 12.7 centimetres (5 inches) higher than the top of the mattress on all sides. Health Canada recommends that you buy a bed certified to a standard such as ASTM International F1427.

That 5-inch guardrail check is why mattress thickness matters on a top bunk. Check the bunk's label for the mattress size and thickness it was designed for, then match it. Our guide to choosing a mattress for a bunk bed lists the profiles that keep the rail high enough. Our page of bunk bed safety and setup guide covers setup and daily habits.

Support matters for older sleepers too. A 2011 sleep-lab study in Ergonomics tested 17 healthy sleepers (Verhaert and colleagues). It found that a sagging sleep system lowered sleep quality in the lab for people who sleep on their side or stomach. A frame that lets the middle of the mattress dip is one way a bed starts to sag.

This is general information, not medical advice. If a child or adult has back pain, a sleep problem or a mobility concern, ask your doctor. Bring their advice to the store and we will match the bed to it.

Twin bed frame for adults: weight capacity and support

A twin bed frame for an adult needs a published weight rating, a solid centre support and a deck that does not flex. Most of our platform bed frames list the support they come with. The rating should cover the sleeper plus the mattress, and the number comes from the manufacturer, never a guess. Beaudoin rates the Level twin and twin XL platforms at 600 lb on its spec sheet.

On a slatted frame, the gap between slats decides how well a foam or latex mattress is held. Some mattress warranties set a maximum gap, so read yours before you choose the frame. Our guide to bed slats explains spacing, slat width and when a bunkie board helps. For adults who want the bed to feel like furniture, the Beaudoin upholstered twins or a set from our twin bedroom sets guide make a guest room look finished.

How to choose a twin bed frame

Step 1: Decide who sleeps in the twin bed

A small child needs a low frame and, if it is a bunk, the bottom bunk until age 6. A teen who may grow past six feet is better on twin XL. An adult needs a frame with a published weight rating.

Step 2: Measure the room for the frame footprint

Use the frame's listed size, not the 38 x 75 mattress. Note where doors swing and where a trundle or drawers will slide out, since both need open floor in front of the bed.

Step 3: Pick the twin frame type for the room's second job

Guests twice a year point to a trundle or daybed. No dresser points to a captain's bed. Two kids in one room point to a bunk bed. A plain bedroom points to a platform.

Step 4: Match support to your twin mattress

Confirm the frame has a deck or slats, or budget for a box spring. Check the slat gap against your mattress warranty.

Step 5: Add delivery to the twin bed frame price

A bed frame order under $500 pays $80 delivery in Ontario. Call (519) 770-0001 to check stock before you drive in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a twin bed?

A twin bed is a one-person bed built for a twin mattress, which the Better Sleep Council lists at 38 x 75 inches. In Canada it is also called a single. It is the usual size for kids' rooms, guest rooms, daybeds and bunk beds.

What size bed frame do I need for a twin mattress?

You need a frame labelled twin or single, made for a 38 x 75 inch mattress. Some Canadian frames are listed at 39 x 75, such as the Beaudoin Level twin platform. Make sure it does not say twin XL, which is five inches longer.

Can a twin bed fit two people?

A twin bed is designed for one sleeper and is too narrow for two adults. If two people need to sleep in the same small room, a trundle bed gives each person a twin. If a couple needs one bed, look at a double, which Beaudoin builds at 54 x 75 inches. Our twin vs double vs queen comparison shows the room each one needs.

What age do you get a twin bed?

Most children move to a twin bed after the crib. Health Canada says to move a child from a crib to a junior bed when they can climb out on their own or are taller than 90 centimetres, whichever comes first. Keep children under 6 off the top bunk of any bunk bed.

Do I need a box spring with a twin bed frame?

Not if the frame has a platform deck or slats, such as the Level Platform Bed or the Budget Bed Frame. A frame with only side rails needs a box spring or bunkie board. Our twin Standard Box Spring is $129.99.

Will a twin XL mattress fit a twin frame?

No. A twin XL mattress is 80 inches long and a twin frame is built for 75. With a footboard it will not go in, and without one it hangs five inches past the end with no support. Buy a twin XL frame, such as the Level at $445.

How much weight can a twin bed frame hold?

It depends on the frame, and only the manufacturer's rating counts. Beaudoin rates the Level twin platform at 600 lb on its spec sheet. If a listing gives no rating, ask before you buy a frame for an adult.

What is a twin captain's bed?

A twin captain's bed is a twin frame with storage built into the base, usually drawers, a pull-out trundle or both. At Mattress Miracle the Captain Bed with Trundle and Storage is $680 and the Mariner captain's bed with trundle is $660.

Where can I see twin bed frames in Brantford?
