Quick Answer: A musty mattress smell is almost always caused by trapped moisture, usually from perspiration, poor ventilation, or a spill that was not dried properly. Sprinkle baking soda, let it sit two hours, then vacuum. Follow with a light white vinegar spray and air thoroughly. If black spots are visible or the smell returns immediately, the mould is too deep to clean safely.

Why Your Mattress Smells Musty
Your mattress absorbs a remarkable amount of moisture over time. The average person perspires between 0.5 and 1 litre per night during sleep. Over months and years, that moisture works its way through your sheets and into the mattress layers beneath.
When moisture accumulates in a poorly ventilated space, it creates ideal conditions for mould and mildew, which release microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs). Those compounds are the source of the musty, earthy smell you are noticing.
Common Causes of Musty Mattress Odour
- Perspiration and body heat: The most common cause. Memory foam is particularly prone because it traps heat and moisture rather than allowing airflow through the material.
- Spills not dried completely: Even a small spill can leave moisture in the middle layers of the mattress where it cannot evaporate.
- High bedroom humidity: Rooms above 50% relative humidity create conditions where moisture in the mattress cannot fully dry out between uses.
- Sleeping directly on a platform with no airflow: Solid platform beds and box springs with no ventilation trap moisture under the mattress.
- Mattress protector that is not breathable: A plastic-backed protector can trap moisture against the mattress surface rather than wicking it away.
- Storage conditions: A mattress stored in a damp basement or garage will develop musty odours quickly and bring them out when used again.
The Humidity Connection
Health Canada and Public Health Agency of Canada guidelines recommend maintaining indoor relative humidity between 30% and 50% to reduce mould risk. At humidity above 60%, mould can begin growing on organic materials within 24 to 48 hours. A simple digital hygrometer (under $20 at most hardware stores) can tell you whether your bedroom is in the safe range.
Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "The musty smell question comes up regularly. People assume they need to buy a new mattress, but often the fix is straightforward. The key is acting before the moisture becomes embedded mould. If you catch it early, baking soda and good ventilation solve the problem. Wait too long and the smell becomes a health concern, not just an annoyance."
How to Deodorize a Mattress Without Chemicals
These methods use materials you likely already have at home. They are safe, effective for mild-to-moderate musty odours, and leave no chemical residue on a surface you sleep on every night.
Method 1: Baking Soda (Best for Mild Odours)
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) neutralises acidic odour compounds through a chemical reaction. It does not just mask the smell.
- Strip all bedding and take the mattress outside or to a well-ventilated room if possible.
- Vacuum the mattress surface thoroughly with an upholstery attachment. Remove all surface dust, hair, and debris.
- Sprinkle a generous, even layer of baking soda over the entire mattress surface. For an especially musty mattress, add a few drops of lavender or tea tree essential oil to the baking soda before applying.
- Leave the baking soda for at least two hours. For a serious musty smell, leave it for up to eight hours or overnight. Sunlight speeds up the process: if you can get the mattress into direct sunlight, ultraviolet light also helps kill mould spores.
- Vacuum all the baking soda off thoroughly.
- Flip to the other side and repeat if needed.
Baking Soda Tip
Use a flour sifter or fine mesh strainer to apply the baking soda evenly. An uneven pile of baking soda clumps in some spots and leaves others untreated. A thin, even coat covers more surface area and does a better job.
Method 2: White Vinegar Spray (Best for Musty or Sweat Odours)
White vinegar is a mild acid that kills mould spores and neutralises alkaline odour sources like ammonia from urine or sweat.
- Mix equal parts distilled white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
- Lightly mist the mattress surface. Do not saturate. The goal is a fine, even mist, not a wet surface. A damp mattress takes many hours to dry, and a wet mattress is the problem you are trying to solve.
- Let the mattress air dry completely in a well-ventilated room, ideally with a fan running. This can take four to eight hours depending on humidity.
- The vinegar smell will dissipate completely once the mattress is dry. Do not put bedding back on until it is fully dry.
Method 3: Combination Method (For Moderate Musty Odours)
- Apply the vinegar spray first and allow to dry for two to three hours.
- Once dry, apply baking soda and leave for several hours.
- Vacuum thoroughly.
- Air the mattress for an additional hour before making the bed.
Method 4: Sunlight and Fresh Air
Ultraviolet light from direct sunlight kills mould spores and helps evaporate trapped moisture. If you can get your mattress outside for several hours on a dry, sunny day, this is one of the most effective treatments for musty smell. Combine with the baking soda method for best results.
| Method | Best For | Time Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baking soda | Mild odours, general freshening | 2-8 hours | Most gentle, good routine maintenance |
| Vinegar spray | Musty smell, sweat odour | 4-8 hours drying | Do not over-apply. Smell fades when dry. |
| Combination | Moderate musty odour | Half day | Most thorough. Apply vinegar first, then baking soda. |
| Sunlight | Surface mould spores, moisture | Several hours | Pair with baking soda for best results |
What If It Is Actually Mould?
A musty smell alone may indicate early-stage mould or simply trapped moisture. Visible mould spots change the situation significantly.
Surface mould (small spots under the size of a dinner plate, on the surface only, light grey or greenish) may be treatable with a vinegar solution and thorough drying. Saturate the affected area with undiluted white vinegar, let sit for one hour, blot dry with a clean cloth, and allow to air dry fully in sunlight if possible.
Do not attempt to clean and keep the mattress if:
- Black or dark mould is present. Black mould (Stachybotrys) releases mycotoxins that pose genuine health risks.
- Mould is present on both the top and underside of the mattress.
- The mould spots are larger than approximately 30 cm (12 inches).
- The musty smell returns within days of cleaning.
- Any household member has respiratory issues, allergies, or a compromised immune system.
Mould and Health: What the Research Shows
A 2016 review in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that exposure to indoor mould is associated with increased respiratory symptoms, asthma exacerbation, and immune sensitisation. For individuals with existing respiratory conditions, sleeping on a mould-contaminated mattress represents a meaningful nightly exposure risk. This is one situation where replacement is not optional.
Preventing Musty Smell From Coming Back
The musty smell will return if you address the odour but not the underlying moisture problem.
Use a Breathable Mattress Protector
A good mattress protector does two things: it blocks spills and moisture from reaching the mattress, and it should be breathable enough to allow some evaporation. Avoid 100% plastic-backed protectors that trap heat and moisture at the surface. Look for Tencel, bamboo, or knit-fabric covers with a thin waterproof membrane. Our guide to cooling mattress protectors covers the key features to look for.
Air Your Mattress Daily
When you get up in the morning, pull back the duvet and leave the bed open for 20 to 30 minutes before making it. This simple habit allows surface moisture to evaporate instead of being trapped under the covers. It makes a measurable difference over time.
Rotate Regularly
Rotating the mattress every three to six months moves the wear and moisture pattern. The area that was at your head, where perspiration is highest, moves to the foot end where it can recover.
Control Bedroom Humidity
In Ontario, winter and summer humidity fluctuations can be significant. If your bedroom consistently runs above 50% humidity (check with a $15 digital hygrometer), a small dehumidifier in the bedroom will have more impact than any cleaning method on preventing moisture build-up in the mattress.
Elevate the Mattress for Airflow
Solid platform beds with no slats, or mattresses sitting directly on the floor, create a sealed, humid environment underneath the mattress. Slatted bases with gaps of 5 to 8 cm allow airflow underneath, which helps moisture evaporate rather than accumulate.
Talia, Showroom Specialist: "The prevention part is where most people go wrong. They clean the mattress and then put the same plastic-backed protector back on it. Within a month the smell is back. The protector is often as important as anything else you do. A breathable protector that wicks moisture away from the mattress changes the whole situation."
When to Replace Instead of Clean
Cleaning is appropriate for odour, minor surface issues, and mild moisture problems. It is not appropriate for structural mould contamination, persistent smell after multiple treatments, or a mattress that is already past its useful life.
If your mattress is more than 8 years old, has deep mould contamination, or causes physical discomfort regardless of the odour, the cleaning question becomes secondary. You are better off channelling that effort and cost toward a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my mattress smell musty even though I keep my bedroom clean?
A clean bedroom does not necessarily mean a dry one. The smell is caused by moisture inside the mattress itself, primarily from perspiration absorbed nightly over months or years. Even without visible spills, a mattress can accumulate enough moisture to develop mould or mildew inside its layers. High bedroom humidity, a non-breathable mattress protector, or a platform with poor airflow underneath are the most common contributing factors.
Is it safe to sleep on a musty-smelling mattress?
A faint musty smell from trapped moisture is generally not an immediate health concern for healthy adults. However, if the smell is strong, if visible mould is present, or if anyone in the household has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system, sleeping on the mattress while you clean and dry it is not advisable. In those cases, clean and fully dry the mattress first, or use an alternative sleeping arrangement in the meantime.
How long should I leave baking soda on my mattress?
A minimum of two hours for mild odours. For a genuinely musty smell, leave it for eight hours or overnight. The longer the baking soda sits, the more odour compounds it can absorb and neutralise. If you can simultaneously expose the mattress to sunlight during this period, you will get better results as UV light works on mould spores while the baking soda works on the odour.
Can I use a hairdryer or fan to speed up drying after vinegar treatment?
A fan is excellent and strongly recommended. A hairdryer can be used for small, localised areas on a cool or warm setting, but avoid high heat on memory foam as it can damage the material. Running a fan directed at the mattress surface significantly cuts drying time. In Ontario's winters, the dry indoor air also helps. Avoid putting bedding back on until the mattress is completely dry to the touch.
Will a mattress topper help cover a musty smell?
No. A topper covers the surface but does nothing about the source of the odour inside the mattress. The smell will work through the topper over time, and you will have added the expense of a topper to a mattress that still has a mould or moisture problem. Clean the mattress first. If the smell is too embedded to clean, the mattress needs replacing, not covering.
