Quick Answer: To choose a mattress that does not smell, look for natural latex, innerspring, or hybrid mattresses with certified foams, such as CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX certified materials. Avoid dense all-polyurethane foam mattresses, which off-gas the most strongly and for the longest. Traditional innerspring and hybrid mattresses with minimal foam content off-gas significantly less than all-foam designs.

The chemical smell that comes off a new mattress, commonly called off-gassing, is one of the most common complaints from people who buy compressed foam mattresses online. Choosing a mattress that does not smell, or at least one whose smell dissipates quickly, is a real and valid consideration, especially for people with sensitivities or who share a bedroom with young children.
What Is Off-Gassing and Is It Harmful?
Off-gassing is the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from synthetic foam materials. When a new mattress, especially a compressed roll-pack foam mattress, is opened and expanded, the VOCs trapped during manufacturing begin to release into the air. The resulting smell ranges from mild and barely noticeable to strong enough to cause headaches in sensitive individuals.
According to the Sleep Foundation, off-gassing from certified foam mattresses poses no known serious long-term health risks for most people. However, the compounds involved are real chemicals, and individuals with chemical sensitivities, asthma, or allergies may be more affected than others. The smell is temporary in most cases, dissipating within 24 to 72 hours for most mattresses with adequate ventilation.
VOCs and Indoor Air Quality
Health Canada categorises VOCs as a category of air pollutant that can contribute to indoor air quality concerns at high concentrations. Research published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology found that VOC emissions from new foam bedding products are highest in the first 24 hours after unpacking and decline rapidly with ventilation. Certified materials, such as those meeting CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX Standard 100, are tested for VOC emission limits and represent a lower-emission choice.

Which Mattress Materials Smell the Least
Innerspring mattresses off-gas least of all, because the bulk of the mattress is steel coils with only a thin comfort layer of foam or fibre. Our Restonic ComfortCare Queen uses 1,222 individually pocketed steel coils as its primary structure, with a modest comfort layer above. The result is a mattress with very little foam volume relative to the sleeping surface, meaning far less off-gassing potential than a comparable all-foam design.
Natural latex is the second-lowest off-gassing option. It does have a natural rubber smell when new, but it is a biological odour rather than a synthetic chemical smell, and most people find it far less unpleasant. The smell dissipates within a few days to a couple of weeks. Certified organic latex mattresses carry GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certification, which confirms the latex content and manufacturing practices.
All-polyurethane foam mattresses, including traditional memory foam, off-gas most strongly. The denser the foam and the more recently it was manufactured and compressed, the stronger the initial smell. If you are particularly sensitive to chemical odours, an all-foam mattress should be at the bottom of your shortlist regardless of other features.
How to Reduce New Mattress Smell

When a new mattress arrives, the most effective way to minimise odour is to unpack it in the bedroom with the windows open and leave it uncovered for 24 to 48 hours before sleeping on it. Running a fan directed across the mattress surface significantly accelerates the off-gassing process by promoting air circulation around the foam layers. The goal is not to contain the smell but to move it out of the room as quickly as possible.
Baking soda is a useful surface odour absorber. Sprinkle a light layer across the mattress surface, leave it for two to four hours, then vacuum thoroughly with an upholstery attachment. This works best on foam surfaces where the baking soda can contact the off-gassing layer directly. Do not use baking soda paste or water-based cleaners, as moisture introduces more problems than it solves.
For mattresses with persistent odour, activated charcoal sachets placed on the mattress surface or around the room can absorb residual VOCs. These are odourless themselves and available at most health or hardware stores. This is particularly useful in a smaller bedroom with limited ventilation, such as the second bedroom typical of many Brantford homes.
In our showroom, Brad and the Mattress Miracle team can advise specifically on which mattress in your price range will have the most minimal off-gassing experience based on its construction. If you are highly sensitive, we will also discuss our Restonic models with natural comfort layers, which produce far less synthetic chemical odour than all-foam alternatives.
How to Speed Up Off-Gassing
If your new mattress has an odour, unpack it in a well-ventilated room and leave a window open for 24 to 48 hours before sleeping on it. Placing a fan near the mattress to move air across the surface accelerates the process. Avoid making the bed with sheets immediately after unpacking, as covering the surface traps the gases. Baking soda sprinkled lightly on the surface and vacuumed off after a few hours can also help absorb residual odour from foam surfaces.
Smell-Free Mattress Options in Brantford
Since 1997, Brad and the Mattress Miracle team have carried innerspring and hybrid mattresses from Restonic. These coil-based mattresses have significantly less foam content than the all-foam compressed mattresses that dominate online sales, meaning they off-gas far less. If odour sensitivity is a priority for you, come to our West Street showroom and we will specifically point you toward our lowest-off-gassing options in your price range and size.

How long does new mattress smell last?
For most foam mattresses with adequate ventilation, the strongest smell dissipates within 24 to 72 hours. A faint residual smell may linger for one to two weeks. All-foam mattresses, particularly dense memory foam designs, take longer than hybrid or innerspring options with minimal foam. In a poorly ventilated room, off-gassing can persist for two to three weeks. If the smell is still strong after four weeks with regular ventilation, contact the manufacturer, as this is outside the normal range.
What certifications indicate a low-smell mattress?
CertiPUR-US certification means the foam has been tested by accredited laboratories and meets strict standards for VOC emissions, heavy metals, ozone depleters, and flame retardants. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 covers a broader range of materials, including covers and fibres, and certifies that no harmful substances exceed established limits. GOLS certification applies specifically to natural latex. Any mattress carrying one or more of these certifications is a lower-emission choice than uncertified alternatives.
Is it safe to sleep on a mattress that still smells?
For most healthy adults, a mildly off-gassing mattress poses no known serious health risk. If the smell is very strong, causing headaches, eye irritation, or respiratory discomfort, sleep somewhere else until the smell reduces with ventilation. Pregnant women, infants, young children, and people with chemical sensitivities should be more cautious and should allow a full two to three days of ventilation before sleeping on a strongly off-gassing mattress.
Do organic mattresses smell less than regular mattresses?
Generally yes, but the difference depends on the materials. Certified organic cotton covers and wool comfort layers produce essentially no chemical off-gassing. Certified organic latex has a natural rubber smell rather than a synthetic chemical smell, which most people find more tolerable. If a mattress is labelled as organic but still contains uncertified synthetic foam layers, the organic cover does not prevent the foam from off-gassing. Check what specific components carry organic certification, not just whether the overall mattress uses the word organic in its marketing.
