Why a System Approach Is Different
Most mattress cleaning guides treat urine as a single problem: the smell. Remove the smell, the job is done. But urine on a mattress creates several distinct problems simultaneously:
- Uric acid crystals that cause persistent odour
- Bacteria introduced with the urine and grown in the organic-rich, moist environment afterward
- Allergen residue (proteins, organic compounds) that attracts and feeds dust mites
- Moisture that creates conditions for mould if not fully dried
- Future vulnerability to the same problem, now with a compromised surface
A single enzyme spray addresses one of these. A system approach addresses all of them in sequence. This article describes that system. It takes more time than a quick spray-and-vacuum, but the result is a mattress that is genuinely clean and protected, not just deodorised for a few weeks.
Layer 1: Enzyme Treatment for Uric Acid and Odour
Enzyme treatment is the foundation of the system. Everything else builds on it. If the uric acid is not broken down, subsequent steps are treating the symptoms rather than the cause.
Enzyme Treatment Protocol
- Blot all liquid first. Use dry cloths and firm pressure to remove as much urine as possible before any cleaner is applied.
- Apply enzyme cleaner to cover the entire stain plus 5-8 cm beyond the visible edge. Urine spreads further than the visible stain in all directions.
- Press the cleaner in with a cloth to encourage penetration below the surface layer.

UV light does not replace enzyme cleaning. UV-C kills bacteria on the surface but does not break down the organic compounds that cause odour. The correct order is: enzyme treatment first, UV light second, after blotting and before baking soda application.
Layer 3: Baking Soda for Moisture and Allergen Absorption
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is the third layer in the sanitation system. It is not cleaning the urine at this point; the enzyme treatment has addressed that. Baking soda's role here is twofold:
- Moisture absorption: After enzyme cleaning and blotting, there is residual moisture in the mattress. Baking soda on the surface absorbs this moisture as the mattress dries, drawing it up rather than allowing it to sit.
- Allergen absorption: Protein residue from urine and other organic compounds at the surface adhere to baking soda particles. Vacuuming the baking soda after it has dried removes some of this residue from the surface, reducing the allergen load that dust mites feed on.
Baking Soda Application
- After UV treatment (or after blotting if UV is not being used), sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the entire treated area.

Choosing a mattress encasement:
- Look for a waterproof membrane (TPU is quieter and more breathable than vinyl).
