Quick Answer: Mattresses that produce little to no smell use natural latex, innerspring/hybrid construction, and CertiPUR-US or GOLS certified materials. All-foam and bed-in-a-box mattresses smell the most because compressed foam releases concentrated VOCs when unboxed. Hybrid mattresses from showrooms (never compressed) have minimal off-gassing. Natural materials like latex, wool, and cotton produce almost no chemical odour.

That "new mattress smell" is not just unpleasant. For some people, it triggers headaches, nausea, eye irritation, and respiratory discomfort. For those with chemical sensitivities, asthma, or allergies, it can make a new mattress unusable for days or weeks.
The smell comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from synthetic foam, adhesives, and flame retardant treatments. Some mattresses produce significantly more odour than others, and the way a mattress is packaged and delivered makes a big difference. This guide explains which mattress types and materials produce the least smell, which certifications actually limit chemical exposure, and how to choose a mattress that will not turn your bedroom into a chemistry lab.
Why New Mattresses Smell
Off-gassing happens when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) trapped in solid materials transition to gas at room temperature and release into the air. These compounds are part of the manufacturing process for synthetic foams, adhesives, and chemical treatments.
What Causes the Smell
Common VOCs in Mattresses
- Formaldehyde: Used in some adhesives that bond foam layers together. Classified as a known human carcinogen by the WHO at high concentrations. CertiPUR-US certified foam is manufactured without added formaldehyde.
- Toluene and benzene: Solvents used in foam production. Both are classified as harmful at high concentrations. Modern manufacturing has significantly reduced their presence, but traces remain in some products.
- Isocyanates: Used in polyurethane foam production. They are mostly reacted (consumed) during manufacturing but can leave residual traces that off-gas slowly.
- Flame retardant chemicals: Historically a major source of VOCs. Canadian regulations have changed, and many manufacturers now use barrier fabrics instead of chemical flame retardants.

Why Bed-in-a-Box Smells Worse
Compressed mattresses smell more than non-compressed mattresses for two reasons. First, the foam is compressed and sealed in plastic immediately after manufacturing, trapping VOCs that would normally dissipate during warehouse storage. Second, when you open the box and the foam expands, those trapped gases release all at once in a concentrated burst. A mattress that sat in a warehouse or showroom for weeks has already off-gassed most of its VOCs before reaching your home.
Which Mattresses Smell Most (And Least)
| Mattress Type | Smell Level | Why | Typical Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compressed all-foam (bed-in-a-box) | Highest | Multiple foam layers, compressed packaging traps VOCs | 3-7 days (up to 4 weeks for sensitive noses) |
| Memory foam (non-compressed) | Moderate-high | Dense viscoelastic foam produces more VOCs than other foam types | 2-5 days |
| Hybrid (foam + coils, non-compressed) | Low-moderate | Less foam volume, coil system provides ventilation | 1-3 days |
| Innerspring (traditional) | Low | Minimal foam, mostly steel and fibre | Less than 24 hours |
| Natural latex | Very low | Made from rubber tree sap, not petrochemicals. Mild natural rubber smell only. | Less than 24 hours (natural rubber scent) |
| Organic (GOLS/GOTS certified) | Minimal | Natural materials, no synthetic adhesives or chemical treatments | None to mild natural fibre smell |
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "In almost 40 years, I can count on one hand the number of customers who complained about smell from a mattress they bought in our showroom. That is because our mattresses are not compressed in a box. They sit on our floor, fully expanded, breathing for weeks before they go to a customer's home. The off-gassing happens here, not in your bedroom."

VOCs and Health: What the Research Says
Let us be honest about the risk without either dismissing it or creating panic.
The Measured Risk
The Sleep Foundation's testing methodology notes that VOC emissions from CertiPUR-US certified mattresses are below 0.5 parts per million, which is well within safe limits for healthy adults. Consumer Reports tested multiple mattresses and found that VOC levels from new mattresses are generally low and decrease rapidly after unpacking.
Who Should Be More Cautious
- Infants and young children: Smaller bodies and developing respiratory systems are more vulnerable to chemical exposure. Choose CertiPUR-US certified or natural/organic materials for children's mattresses.
- People with chemical sensitivities (MCS): Even low VOC levels can trigger symptoms. Natural latex or organic mattresses are the safest choice.
- Asthma and allergy sufferers: VOCs can irritate airways and trigger asthma symptoms. Ensure adequate ventilation during the off-gassing period or choose low-VOC options.
- Pregnant women: Research is limited on mattress-specific VOC exposure during pregnancy, but minimizing chemical exposure is a reasonable precaution. Choose certified or natural materials.
Perspective
For most healthy adults, mattress off-gassing is an odour nuisance rather than a health hazard. The VOC levels from a certified mattress are comparable to or lower than other common household items (new furniture, paint, cleaning products). The smell is unpleasant but not dangerous at the concentrations involved.
That said, if you can choose between a mattress that smells and one that does not, why would you choose the one that smells?
Certifications That Actually Matter
Foam Certifications
CertiPUR-US: The most common foam certification in North America. Verifies that foam is made without ozone depleters, prohibited phthalates, mercury, lead, or formaldehyde. Low VOC emissions (under 0.5 ppm). This is the minimum standard you should accept for any foam mattress.
GREENGUARD Gold: Stricter than CertiPUR-US. Tests the finished product (not just individual components) for total VOC emissions in a sealed chamber. Originally developed for hospital and school environments where chemical sensitivity is a primary concern.
Natural Material Certifications
GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): Certifies that latex is at least 95% organic. Controls the entire supply chain from plantation to finished product. The strictest standard for natural latex mattresses.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Certifies organic cotton, wool, and other textiles. Controls chemical inputs during processing. Look for this on mattress covers and padding.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests finished textiles for harmful substances. Widely used in Europe and increasingly in North America. Covers a broad range of chemicals including heavy metals, pesticides, and formaldehyde.
Certifications That Mean Less
"Eco-friendly" or "natural" without third-party certification is marketing, not verification. Any company can call their product "eco-friendly." Only third-party certifications (CertiPUR-US, GREENGUARD, GOLS, GOTS, OEKO-TEX) involve independent testing and verification.
Low-Smell Mattress Options in Canada
Best: Natural Latex Hybrid
Natural Talalay or Dunlop latex is made from the sap of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis), not from petrochemicals. It has a mild, natural rubber scent that most people find neutral or even pleasant. Combined with a pocketed coil system (steel has no VOC emissions) and natural fibre covers, this is the lowest-smell mattress construction available.
The Restonic Revive Tiffany Rose/Jasmine (queen $1,995, 1,188 pocketed coils, Talalay Copper Latex) uses natural Talalay latex as its comfort layer. The copper infusion does not add any smell. Because these mattresses are delivered fully expanded from our showroom (not compressed in a box), any residual off-gassing has already occurred.
Very Good: Hybrid with Natural Fibre Cover
Hybrid mattresses with natural fibre covers (wool, cotton, silk) and CertiPUR-US certified foam produce significantly less smell than all-foam mattresses. The foam volume is lower (2-4 inches vs 10-12 inches in all-foam), the coils add zero VOCs, and natural fibres act as a filter layer.
The Restonic Luxury Silk and Wool (queen $1,395, 884 zoned coils) combines natural silk and wool with certified foam over a coil system. The natural fibres dominate the scent profile.
Good: High-Coil Hybrid
The Restonic ComfortCare Queen ($1,619, 1,222 pocketed coils) uses CertiPUR-US certified foam in thinner comfort layers over a predominantly coil construction. Less foam means less potential for smell. Delivered from our showroom, not compressed.
Approaches That Reduce Smell Further
Buy from a showroom: Mattresses that have been on display for weeks have already off-gassed in a well-ventilated commercial space. By the time they reach your bedroom, the VOC release is largely complete.
Choose non-compressed delivery: Full-size white glove delivery means the mattress was never compressed in plastic, so VOCs were not concentrated and then released all at once.
Smell-Free Shopping in Brantford
Every mattress on our showroom floor at 441 1/2 West Street has been breathing in open air for weeks. When we deliver to your home, the mattress has already completed the off-gassing phase. This is one of the underappreciated advantages of buying from a local store rather than ordering a compressed mattress online. Come in and smell the difference for yourself. Our Restonic range uses CertiPUR-US certified foam and natural fibre options.
How to Reduce New Mattress Smell
If you have already purchased a mattress that smells, or if you are buying a bed-in-a-box, these steps speed up the off-gassing process.
Off-Gassing Reduction Steps
- Unbox in a well-ventilated room. Open windows and run a fan. If possible, set the mattress up in a spare room or garage for the first 24-48 hours.
- Remove all packaging immediately. The plastic wrap traps VOCs against the mattress surface. Cut it away as soon as you unbox.
- Sprinkle baking soda on the surface. Let it sit for 4-8 hours, then vacuum thoroughly. Baking soda absorbs odour molecules from the surface.
- Use an air purifier with activated carbon filter. HEPA filters catch particles but not gases. An activated carbon (charcoal) filter absorbs VOCs from the air. Run it in the bedroom for the first week.
- Do not cover the mattress immediately. Leave it bare (no sheets, no protector) for the first 24-48 hours to allow maximum surface area exposure to air circulation.
- Increase room temperature slightly. Higher temperatures accelerate VOC release. Warming the room to 23-25 degrees Celsius for the first day speeds up off-gassing (then return to normal sleeping temperature).
What If the Smell Does Not Go Away?
For most mattresses, the chemical smell fades to undetectable within 3-7 days. If significant odour persists beyond 2-3 weeks:
- The mattress may have a manufacturing defect (contact the retailer)
- You may have heightened chemical sensitivity (consider a natural/organic alternative)
- Check that the smell is not coming from another source (new bed frame, flooring, or other furniture in the room)
Talia, Showroom Specialist: "When customers ask about mattress smell, I invite them to put their nose right on the mattresses on our floor. They are always surprised that there is basically no smell. That is because these mattresses have been out of packaging for weeks. A showroom mattress has already done its off-gassing before you ever lie on it."

Is new mattress smell harmful?
For most healthy adults, no. CertiPUR-US certified mattresses emit VOCs at levels well below safety thresholds (under 0.5 parts per million). The smell is unpleasant but not dangerous at these concentrations. However, infants, children, people with asthma, and those with chemical sensitivities should take extra precautions: choose low-VOC or natural materials, ventilate thoroughly, and consider allowing the mattress to off-gas in a separate room before sleeping on it.
How long does new mattress smell last?
Most of the noticeable odour dissipates within 24-72 hours for a non-compressed mattress and 3-7 days for a compressed bed-in-a-box. Sensitive individuals may detect traces for 2-4 weeks. Adequate ventilation (open windows, fan) significantly speeds up the process. Memory foam mattresses take the longest to off-gas because the dense foam retains VOCs longer than lighter materials.
Does CertiPUR-US mean a mattress will not smell?
No. CertiPUR-US certifies that foam is made without certain harmful chemicals and that VOC emissions are below a specific threshold. It does not mean the mattress is odour-free. Even certified foam can have a noticeable smell when new, especially if compressed. CertiPUR-US means the smell is from compounds at safe levels, not that there is no smell at all.
Are natural latex mattresses completely smell-free?
Natural latex has a mild rubber scent that some people notice and others do not. It is not a chemical smell but rather the natural odour of vulcanized rubber. Most people find it neutral or slightly sweet. It dissipates within a few days. If you are extremely sensitive to odours, visit a showroom to smell natural latex in person before purchasing. Synthetic or blended latex may have more chemical odour than 100% natural.
Can I sleep on a new mattress right away if it smells?
Healthy adults can sleep on a new mattress immediately even if it has an odour, as the VOC levels from certified mattresses are safe. If the smell bothers you, try ventilating the room with an open window and running a fan. For infants or people with respiratory conditions, it is more cautious to allow 48-72 hours of off-gassing in a ventilated room before sleeping on the mattress.
