Box Spring
The traditional option. A box spring is a wood frame with springs or a metal grid inside, covered in fabric. It adds bounce, absorbs some shock, and raises the bed height by 8-9 inches. Box springs were designed to pair with innerspring mattresses, and that is still where they work best.
The catch: many modern foam and hybrid mattresses specifically say "do not use on a box spring" in their warranty terms. The give in a box spring can cause foam mattresses to sag in spots, especially in the centre where body weight concentrates.
Foundation
A foundation looks like a box spring but is flat and solid inside, no springs. It provides a firm, even surface for any mattress type.
