Mattress protectors by type and price
Mattress protectors at Mattress Miracle run from $43 to $216 in queen, and the price mostly follows the top fabric. Prices below are today's. Each one goes on under the fitted sheet, so a deep protector wants deep-pocket bed sheets on top. The Basic Protection mattress protector is the lowest price on the page. In our experience it suits a guest bed, a kid's bed or a cottage, where the job is catching spills.
Rise Sleep's own product pages say all three of its fitted protectors have a waterproof barrier built in. Rise Sleep also says the elastic is 4 to 5 times thicker than standard elastic, so the corners stay put. On the Ice Silk, Rise Sleep says the sides are waterproofed as well as the top, and the top is woven with cooling nylon fibres. That makes the Ice Silk cooling mattress protector the one we point hot sleepers to, with the Tencel mattress protector as the cheaper middle step.
Health Guard doesn't publish spec sheets online that we could check, so for the backing and warranty terms on its five models, the packaging is the reference. Call us and we'll read it to you. Mattress protector sizes: king, queen, twin and twin XL
A mattress protector has to match both the size and the depth of the mattress. The Sleep Foundation lists a king at 76 by 80 inches and a queen at 60 by 80. It gives a full or double as 54 by 75, a twin as 38 by 75 and a twin XL as 38 by 80. Every protector here comes in twin, double, queen and king.
In king, the protectors on this page run from $49 to $248, and the king size mattress protectors collection shows them by size. A California king is a different shape, 72 by 84 inches, so a king protector is 4 inches too wide and 4 inches too short for it. We don't stock California king protectors. Depth is the other number. Measure your mattress from its bottom edge to the top of any pillow top, then check the depth listed on the product page before you order. A protector that is too shallow pops off the corners, and one that is far too deep bunches under the sheet. Fitted protectors and bed bug encasements
The eight fitted protectors go on like a fitted sheet. They cover the top and sides and leave the underside open, so they are for spills, sweat and wear. Health Canada's bed bug advice is to fully enclose the mattress and the box spring in zippered encasements and to put duct tape over the zipper, which leaves a small gap. As long as the encasement has no rips or holes, Health Canada says, bugs inside cannot get through to bite and will eventually die, and it suggests keeping the mattress enclosed for a full year. The US EPA's bed bug guidance adds that an encasement removes many hiding spots, its light colour makes bugs easier to see, and it should be checked regularly for holes.
Health note: Health Canada says bed bugs are not known to spread disease and their bites do not generally need medical attention. Bites can take up to 14 days to show, and in rare cases people have severe allergic reactions. If a bite looks infected or a reaction is severe, see your doctor or pharmacist.

Mattress protectors for allergies and dust mites
A mattress protector keeps sweat, skin flakes and spills out of the mattress. Rise Sleep says its Essential waterproof protector reduces the buildup of allergens such as pet dander and dust mites. Whether that eases allergy symptoms is a separate question, and the two trials below found that impermeable covers alone did not.
Two 2003 trials in the New England Journal of Medicine tested allergen-impermeable bed covers. In a study of 1,122 adults with asthma (Woodcock and colleagues), the covers cut dust-mite allergen in mattress dust at six months, though not at 12 months. They made no difference to lung function or to how many people could stop inhaled steroids. In a study of 279 people with allergic rhinitis (Terreehorst and colleagues), covers on the mattress, pillow and duvet lowered mite allergen levels but did not significantly improve symptoms. Both teams concluded that covers used as a single measure did not help clinically.

Are your mattress protectors waterproof?
Rise Sleep says its Essential, Tencel and Ice Silk protectors and its Tencel encasement have a waterproof barrier built in. A protector is a thin layer made mainly to keep liquids, stains and allergens out of the mattress. A pad is thicker and adds some cushioning with a little protection. If you want to change how the mattress feels, look at a topper; if you want to protect it, use a protector.
What is better, a mattress topper or a protector?

How often should I wash a mattress protector?
Wash it after any spill or accident and on a regular cycle with your bedding, following the care label. Some waterproof backings call for low heat, so check the label before using a hot dryer.
How often should a mattress protector be replaced?
There is no set schedule. Replace it when it starts to leak, the elastic stops holding the corners, or the fabric tears. An encasement with a hole no longer seals, so the EPA advises checking encasements regularly.
Is a plastic mattress cover a good idea?
We don't stock plastic or vinyl covers. Every protector here has a fabric top over its backing, and the two encasements zip closed. Health Canada notes that for bed bugs a mattress can also be wrapped and sealed in plastic film.
Will a regular mattress protector keep out bed bugs?
A fitted protector leaves the underside open, so it won't. For bed bugs you need a zippered encasement on the mattress and the box spring; the Health Guard Barrier Guard encasement comes in sizes for either one. For an infestation, Health Canada strongly recommends a licensed pest control operator.
