Mattress sale Markham Ontario: beyond chain brand overlap

Mattress Sale Markham Ontario | Mattress Miracle

Quick Answer: Markham has more mattress stores per capita than most Ontario cities, including three Sleep Country locations, The Brick, National Mattress, and JYSK. But they all carry the same four or five brands. Restonic, with 1,222 coils at $1,125 for a queen, is not available at any Markham retailer. That gap is worth knowing about before you buy.

Markham's Mattress Retail Scene

With roughly 360,000 residents and counting, Markham is the largest city in York Region and one of the most populous municipalities in Ontario. It also has one of the densest concentrations of mattress retailers anywhere outside downtown Toronto.

Here is what you are working with locally:

Store Address Primary Brands Type
Sleep Country 3000 Hwy 7 Serta, Beautyrest, Tempur-Pedic National chain
Sleep Country CF Markville Mall Serta, Beautyrest, Tempur-Pedic National chain
Sleep Country 4997 Hwy 7 Serta, Beautyrest, Tempur-Pedic National chain
The Brick 9809 Markham Rd Serta, Sealy, Beautyrest National chain
National Mattress 7701 Woodbine Ave, Unit 8 Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, Springwall Ontario chain
JYSK Multiple locations JYSK house brand International chain

That is at least ten stores within Markham's boundaries, and dozens more within a short drive into Scarborough, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan. You are not short on places to shop.

The question is whether having more stores actually gives you more options.

The Brand Overlap Problem

Markham mattress brand overlap problem: why chain comparison is misleading

Walk into Sleep Country on Highway 7. You will see Serta, Beautyrest, and Tempur-Pedic. Drive to The Brick on Markham Road. You will see Serta, Sealy, and Beautyrest. Visit National Mattress on Woodbine Avenue. You will see Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, and Springwall.

Three different stores. Roughly the same four brands.

Research note: A 2023 study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that consumers in markets with high retail density often experience "choice overload without variety," where the number of stores creates a perception of broad selection despite significant brand overlap. Researchers at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management documented this pattern across Canadian retail categories, including furniture and home goods.

This is not a criticism of those stores. Sleep Country and National Mattress both provide good service, and The Brick runs competitive sales. But when every retailer in Markham carries the same manufacturer lineup, you are not really comparing different mattresses. You are comparing the same mattresses at slightly different prices with different sales pitches.

Brands like Restonic, which manufactures in Waterloo, Ontario, are not distributed through Sleep Country or The Brick. Neither is Sleep In, a Canadian-made flippable mattress brand. You simply cannot test these in Markham.

Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "We get a lot of calls from York Region. People tell us they have visited three or four stores in Markham and feel like they have seen the same bed everywhere. That is actually pretty common in chain-heavy markets. The brands negotiate exclusive distribution through those chains, and smaller manufacturers like Restonic go through independent stores instead."

What Restonic Offers That Markham Stores Don't

Restonic has been manufacturing mattresses since 1938 and operates a plant in Waterloo, Ontario, about 45 minutes from our Brantford showroom. Their construction approach differs from what you will find at chain retailers in a few specific ways.

First, coil counts. The entry-level Restonic ComfortCare queen uses 1,222 individually wrapped coils. For context, most queen mattresses at Sleep Country and The Brick in the $1,000-$1,400 range use 800-1,000 coils. More coils generally means better pressure point distribution, especially for side sleepers and people who share a bed.

Model Queen Price Coil Count Key Feature
ComfortCare $1,125 1,222 Best overall value
Revive Reflections ET $1,395 1,200 Flippable dual-sided
Luxury Silk and Wool $1,395 884 zoned Natural silk and wool fibres
Revive Tiffany Rose $1,995 1,188 Talalay Copper Latex
Revive St Charles $2,150 1,188 15-inch flagship

Second, the flippable construction. The Revive Reflections and Silk and Wool models are dual-sided, which means you can flip them to extend their lifespan. Most mattresses sold at chain stores in Markham are single-sided. A flippable mattress can realistically last 10-15 years instead of the typical 7-10, according to guidelines from the Sleep Research Society.

Third, pricing. Markham's cost of living is above the Ontario average, and retail rents along Highway 7 are among the highest in York Region. Those costs get built into mattress prices. Our Brantford location has significantly lower overhead, which is one reason you will find queen mattresses starting at $1,125 with 1,222 coils.

Is the Drive to Brantford Practical?

Honestly, it depends on your schedule. Markham to our showroom at 441½ West Street in Brantford is about 140 kilometres. That is roughly an hour and a half via the 407 to the 403, or closer to two hours on the 401 to the 403 during peak traffic.

For a purchase you will use every night for the next decade, an hour and a half each way is not unreasonable. But we also understand that not everyone has a free Saturday afternoon to make a round trip.

A practical approach: Call Talia at (519) 770-0001 before making the drive. Describe what you are sleeping on now, your preferred firmness level, whether you sleep hot, and any back or shoulder issues. A 15-minute phone conversation can narrow your options from twelve mattresses to two or three, so you are not starting from scratch when you arrive.

Many of our Markham customers visit on a Saturday, combine it with a stop in Hamilton or Burlington on the way, and make a morning of it. The 403 corridor has some good brunch spots, and our showroom is right off the highway in downtown Brantford.

White Glove Delivery to Markham

Mattress delivery to Markham and York Region: free shipping details

We deliver to Markham, and it is our full white glove service. That means our delivery team brings the mattress into your bedroom, positions it on your bed frame, removes all packaging, and takes your old mattress away if you want. They wear shoe covers and protect your floors.

This is not doorstep delivery. They will carry your new mattress up to a second or third floor bedroom. If you need basic bed frame assembly, they handle that too.

For Markham condos and apartments: York Region has seen significant condo development along the Highway 7 corridor and around Markham Centre. Our delivery team regularly handles elevator bookings and loading dock logistics for high-rise buildings. If your building requires a delivery appointment or has specific move-in procedures, let us know when you order and we will coordinate with your property management.

Delivery scheduling typically takes a few business days after your purchase. If you are not in a rush, you can order by phone and have it delivered without ever visiting the showroom. About a third of our York Region customers do it that way.

How to Actually Compare Mattresses

Whether you end up buying from Sleep Country, National Mattress, or from us in Brantford, here are the specific things to compare. Most shoppers focus on price and firmness, but those are actually the least useful metrics on their own.

Coil count and type

Ask every store for the exact coil count of any mattress you are considering. Not a range, not "approximately." The exact number. If the salesperson cannot tell you, that is a red flag. Higher coil counts generally mean better motion isolation and more targeted support, as documented in a 2021 study in Applied Ergonomics examining mattress construction and spinal alignment.

Single-sided versus flippable

A single-sided mattress can only be rotated. A flippable mattress can be both rotated and flipped, which distributes wear across two sleeping surfaces instead of one. The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine has noted that mattress surface degradation is a primary contributor to reduced sleep quality over time. Flipping doubles the effective lifespan of that surface.

Foam density

If a mattress uses memory foam or comfort foam layers, ask for the density in pounds per cubic foot. Higher density foam holds its shape longer. Budget mattresses often use 1.5-2.0 lb density foam. Quality mattresses use 3.0 lb and above. This is rarely disclosed on retail floor tags.

Where it is made

Mattresses manufactured in Canada undergo different quality standards than imports. Restonic manufactures in Waterloo, Ontario. Sleep In mattresses are also Canadian-made. Knowing the origin helps you assess both quality control and your ability to get warranty service.

The "20-minute rule": Research published in Sleep Medicine Reviews suggests that meaningful mattress testing requires at least 15-20 minutes of lying in your typical sleep position. A quick sit-and-bounce in a showroom tells you almost nothing about how a mattress will feel after eight hours. If a store is not willing to let you lie on a mattress for 20 minutes, consider that a signal about their priorities.

What About Online Mattress Retailers?

Markham is well within the delivery range of every bed-in-a-box company operating in Canada. Endy, Douglas, Silk and Snow, Casper, and others will all ship to your door. These are legitimate products, and the 365-night trial periods reduce your risk.

The trade-off is that you cannot test them beforehand. A compressed foam mattress feels different after a week of break-in than it does on day one. And returns, while technically free, involve coordinating a pickup that can take several weeks.

We are not going to pretend those companies do not exist. If you want a $700 foam mattress delivered in a box, that might genuinely be the right choice for you. Where we differ is in construction. Our Restonic lineup is coil-based with specific comfort layers, which gives you a different feel than compressed foam. Some people prefer one, some the other. The only way to know is to test both.

A Note on Markham's Housing Stock

Markham's housing mix matters for mattress shopping. According to the 2021 Census, 56.2% of dwellings are single-detached homes, 27.9% are attached homes like townhouses, and 15.9% are apartments. The city's average household size is 3.0 people, which is higher than the Ontario average.

If you are in one of the newer subdivisions in Cornell, Berczy, or Markham Centre, you likely have standard bedroom dimensions that accommodate any queen or king mattress without issues. Older homes in Unionville and the historic Markham Village sometimes have narrower staircases that make king-sized delivery tricky. Our delivery team can usually work around this, but it is worth measuring your staircase width and any tight corners before ordering a king.

For families with children, the ComfortCare line starts at $599 for a twin with 690 coils. That is a significant step up from the $200-$400 twins most Markham stores carry, but the construction quality means your child will not need a replacement in three years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you deliver mattresses to Markham?

Yes. We provide full white glove delivery to all of Markham, including condos and apartments along the Highway 7 corridor and in Markham Centre. Our team handles setup, old mattress removal, and floor protection. Call Talia at (519) 770-0001 for delivery scheduling.

How does Restonic pricing compare to Sleep Country in Markham?

Direct comparisons are difficult because Sleep Country does not carry Restonic. However, a Sleep Country queen mattress with 800-1,000 coils typically runs $1,200-$1,800. Our Restonic ComfortCare queen has 1,222 coils at $1,125. The coil count per dollar tends to favour Restonic, though you should compare comfort layers and warranty terms as well.

Is National Mattress on Woodbine Avenue a good option?

National Mattress Outlet Plus at 7701 Woodbine Ave is a well-reviewed store with good customer service. They carry Sealy, Serta, Beautyrest, and Springwall. If you want to test those brands locally, it is a reasonable place to start. We carry different brands, so visiting both gives you a broader comparison.

Can I order by phone and have it delivered without visiting?

Absolutely. About a third of our York Region customers order this way. Call Talia at (519) 770-0001 and she will walk you through the full lineup, ask about your sleep preferences, and help you choose. We also have an online store with Shop Pay installment options for online purchases.

Why should I drive to Brantford when Markham has so many stores?

You might not need to. If you find a mattress you love at Sleep Country or National Mattress, buy it. Our value is in carrying brands and construction types that are not available in Markham. If you have shopped locally and feel like you have been seeing the same mattress in different packaging, that is when the drive to Brantford, or a phone order with delivery, makes sense.
