Can a new mattress cure insomnia?
Only if the mattress is causing or contributing to the insomnia. A 2015 Sleep Health study (Radwan et al.) found mattress support quality significantly affects sleep quality. If you sleep fine when traveling but poorly at home, suspect the mattress. If insomnia persists regardless of location, see a doctor.
What's the difference between insomnia and just bad sleep?
Clinical insomnia means trouble falling or staying asleep at least 3 nights a week for 3+ months, causing daytime impairment. Occasional bad nights aren't insomnia. The Canadian Sleep Society (css-scs.ca) has the full diagnostic criteria.
Do sleep supplements like melatonin work?
Melatonin (1-3 mg, 30-60 min before bed) helps with circadian shifts (jet lag, shift work) but is less effective for primary insomnia. Magnesium glycinate helps some. Valerian root has mixed evidence. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before long-term use.
Should I see a doctor about insomnia?
Yes if: insomnia persists 3+ nights a week for over a month, you fall asleep during the day, you snore loudly or gasp awake, or insomnia is affecting work/relationships. Family doctor first, then sleep clinic referral if needed.
Are weighted blankets good for insomnia?
Some evidence supports them. Ekholm et al. (2020) found 6-8 kg weighted blankets significantly improved insomnia severity over 4 weeks in psychiatric patients. Pick a weight at 10% of body weight. Not a clinical cure — pair with sleep hygiene basics.
