Questions, Answered

The circadian rhythm questions we actually get asked.

If your question isn't here, call our Brantford showroom at 519-770-0001 or stop in at 441 1/2 West Street. A real person answers the phone.

What is a circadian rhythm?
Your body's 24-hour clock that regulates sleep, alertness, body temperature, hormone release, and digestion. It's set primarily by light exposure to the eyes. Bright morning light advances the clock (earlier bedtime); evening bright light delays it (later bedtime).
Are you a morning person or night owl genetic?
Largely genetic. Chronotype (morning/evening preference) is determined by variants in clock genes like PER3 and CLOCK. About 25% of people are clearly morning types, 25% clearly evening types, and 50% in between. You can shift your chronotype modestly with discipline but can't completely change it.
How do you reset your sleep schedule?
Advance gradually — go to bed 15-30 minutes earlier each night. Get bright outdoor light within 30 minutes of waking. Avoid bright screens 1-2 hours before bed. Keep meals and exercise consistent. Takes 1-2 weeks to fully reset.
Why is shift work so hard on sleep?
Shift work fights your circadian rhythm directly. Night-shift workers' bodies want to sleep at night but they're working, then want to be alert during the day but they need to sleep. Long-term shift workers have higher rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression. Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety has shift-work guidance.
What's the best bedroom temperature for sleep?
Caddick et al. (2018) reviewed bedroom environment research: optimal temperature is 17-22°C (62-72°F) with 40-60% humidity, complete darkness, and noise under 35 dB. Canadian bedrooms often run too warm in winter.
