Wood vs metal vs upholstered: which lasts longest?
Solid wood: 20-30+ years. Metal: 15-25 years (can squeak with age). Upholstered: 8-15 years before fabric fades — the wood frame underneath lasts longer.
Are upholstered beds hard to clean?
Vacuum monthly with the upholstery attachment. Spot-clean stains with mild soap and water immediately. Polyester upholstery is easier to clean than linen or velvet. Performance fabric is the most stain-resistant.
Why are metal bed frames cheaper?
Manufacturing is faster and uses less material. Cheap metal frames may flex or squeak with use. Quality steel frames from established brands hold up well and cost more — but still less than premium wood.
Do wood frames squeak?
Solid hardwood frames (oak, maple, walnut) are silent when properly assembled. Particleboard or laminate-faced frames may develop squeaks as the screws loosen — re-tighten annually.
Can I move an upholstered bed frame myself?
Yes if you can disassemble it. Most upholstered beds break down into headboard, footboard, side rails, and slats. Two adults can move a queen bed frame. Mark all bolts and hardware before disassembly.
