The chemistry of PU failure is straightforward. The polyurethane topcoat is sensitive to acids and oils. Human sweat contains lactic acid and urea. Hair products, conditioners, serums, styling products, are oil-based. Skin lotions contain emollients that soften and degrade the polyurethane coating over time. These substances act as solvents that break down the bond between the coating and the backing, beginning as a dull appearance in the affected area and progressing to peeling.
Once delamination begins on a PU surface, it cannot be meaningfully reversed. The separated coating does not re-bond. Repair products can patch small areas temporarily, but large-area peeling indicates end-of-life for that section of upholstery.
