Upholstered headboards are comfortable to lean against. If you read in bed, watch television, or scroll your phone before sleep (we are not here to judge), a padded headboard provides genuine back support. A wooden headboard gives you a flat, hard surface and a cold wall. After years of selling both, this comfort difference is the number one reason customers switch.

They also reduce bedroom noise. The fabric dampens sound in a way that wood and metal cannot. In Brantford homes with hardwood floors, particularly the century homes downtown, an upholstered bed noticeably reduces the echo quality of the room.

Wingback Beds

The headboard wraps around the sides, creating enclosed "wings" that frame the pillow area. Wingback beds feel like sitting in a high-backed chair. They provide lateral support and a sense of enclosure that many people find calming.

The Julien Beaudoin line excels here. The London ($1,199), Ennis ($1,200), and Heaven ($1,250) are all clean-panel designs that differ in headboard height, shape, and padding density. The London has a slightly curved top edge. The Ennis is rectangular with defined corners. The Heaven has a cloud-like cushioned feel.

The entire frame, not just the headboard, is wrapped in fabric. These sit low to the ground and create a modern, minimalist look. Julien Beaudoin is a Quebec-based manufacturer that has been making upholstered beds in Canada for over 30 years. We carry their full residential line because the build quality consistently outperforms anything we have seen at the same price point from imported competitors.

What sets Beaudoin apart is the customization. When you order a Beaudoin bed, you choose from dozens of fabric options across their catalogue. The bed is then made to order in their Quebec facility. Delivery typically takes 4-6 weeks, but you get exactly what you want rather than choosing from three pre-set colours.

Absolute vs Woodland Footboard

Most Beaudoin models come in two footboard configurations, and this choice confuses a lot of first-time buyers.

The Absolute footboard is a full-height upholstered panel at the foot of the bed. It matches the headboard fabric and creates a fully enclosed look. The bed appears finished from every angle, which matters if it is visible from a hallway or if your bedroom layout puts the foot of the bed facing the door.

The Woodland footboard is a low wooden rail. It exposes the mattress at the foot end, which some people prefer because it makes getting in and out slightly easier and keeps the bed looking less bulky.

Both options are available on the London, Ennis, Heaven, Jane, Liverpool, Adam, Chelsea, and Adelaide models at the same base price. The Absolute looks more polished. The Woodland is more practical. Neither is objectively better.

Headboard-Only Options

Fabric Types and How They Wear

The fabric on an upholstered bed works harder than the fabric on a sofa. A headboard absorbs body oil from hair, skin contact from leaning, and ambient bedroom humidity. Knowing what you are getting matters for long-term satisfaction.

Performance Polyester

The most common and most practical choice. Performance polyester resists staining, cleans easily with a damp cloth, and holds its colour well even in direct sunlight. Most IFDC and Mattress Miracle branded beds use this fabric. Durability is 8-12 years with regular maintenance.

Velvet

Velvet looks spectacular when new. The Elysian and Regal Velvet beds create a visual impact that no other fabric matches. However, velvet requires more care. It shows marks when the nap is brushed in different directions (called "crushing"), and it accumulates lint and pet hair more readily than flat-weave fabrics.

To maintain velvet, brush the headboard weekly with a soft-bristle brush in the direction of the nap. A fabric steamer from a distance of 6-8 inches lifts crushed nap. Expect visible wear patterns in 5-8 years in the area where your head and shoulders rest nightly.

Linen and Cotton Blends

Natural fibre upholstery has a textural warmth that synthetics cannot replicate. But linen wrinkles, stains more easily, and wears faster than polyester. If you choose a natural fabric through Beaudoin's custom options, consider treating it with a fabric protector spray (Scotchgard or equivalent) upon delivery.

Care and Maintenance

Upholstered beds require slightly more maintenance than wood or metal frames. Here is a realistic care schedule.

Weekly: Brush velvet with soft bristle brush. Wipe polyester headboards with a dry cloth if visibly dusty.

Monthly: Vacuum the entire headboard and frame rails with an upholstery attachment. Pay attention to tufting divots and seams where dust collects. This takes 2-3 minutes.

As needed: Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. Blot, do not rub. For stubborn stains, test any cleaning product on a hidden area first (the back of the headboard or the underside of a rail).

Every 1-2 years: Professional upholstery cleaning for high-use beds. This is optional but extends fabric life significantly, especially for natural fibres.

Pet Considerations

If pets sleep on or near the bed, fabric choice matters considerably. Performance polyester resists claw snags better than velvet. Light colours show pet hair more than dark ones (though dark velvet shows everything regardless). A lint roller kept in the nightstand drawer handles daily pet hair on the headboard.

Sizing and Room Planning

Upholstered beds have a larger visual footprint than wood or metal frames. The padded headboard adds 3-5 inches to the depth compared to a wood slat headboard, and the upholstered rails are thicker than wooden ones.

For a queen upholstered bed, plan for approximately 65 inches wide by 90 inches long as the total frame footprint (including headboard depth). This is about 5-7 inches larger in each dimension than a basic platform frame. In bedrooms under 130 square feet, this difference can mean the gap between a bed that fits comfortably and one that crowds the room.

The low-profile models (Elysian Velvet) mitigate this somewhat. Their shorter headboard height makes the room feel less occupied by the bed, even if the floor footprint is similar.
