Pillow Shams Explained: Sizing, Styling, and Bedding Sets

Quick Answer: A pillow sham is a decorative pillowcase with a flanged or bordered edge, designed to sit in front of your sleeping pillows during the day. Standard shams fit 20"x26" pillows, king shams fit 20"x36". You sleep on your regular pillowcases and use shams for presentation. They are the easiest way to make a bed look finished.

Reading time: 9 minutes

Walk into a hotel room and the bed looks effortlessly polished. Multiple pillows, layered textures, everything coordinated but not fussy. Walk into most bedrooms at home and there is a fitted sheet, a duvet pulled up, and two pillows in whatever cases were handy. The difference is not money. It is knowing what shams, Euro pillows, and bedroom pillows actually do and how to arrange them.

This guide covers the practical side: what each piece is called, what size to buy, and how to put it all together without spending a fortune or adding 15 minutes to your morning routine.

What Are Pillow Shams

A pillow sham is a decorative covering for a bed pillow. It looks like a pillowcase but with a few key differences:

  • Flanged or bordered edges: Shams have a flat fabric border (usually 5-7 cm) around all four sides, giving them a more structured, finished look than a plain pillowcase.
  • Back closure: Instead of the open-end tuck of a pillowcase, shams close with an envelope flap or hidden zipper on the back.
  • Decorative purpose: You do not sleep on shams. They sit in front of your sleeping pillows during the day and get removed at night.

That last point confuses people. Shams bedding exists purely for presentation. Your sleeping pillows go in regular pillowcases (cotton, linen, silk, whatever you prefer). The shams go over decorative pillow inserts that stay on the bed during the day and get tossed onto a chair or bench at bedtime.

Why Separating Sleep Pillows from Decorative Pillows Matters

Your sleeping pillow absorbs body oils, perspiration, and skin cells every night. Washing it regularly (every 2-3 months at minimum) keeps allergens and dust mites under control. Decorative pillows and shams do not contact your face, so they need washing far less often (every 3-6 months). Keeping these separate means your sleep pillows stay hygienic and your decorative pillows stay looking fresh without constant laundering.

Sham Sizes and Types

Standard Sham

Fits a standard or queen pillow (20" x 26" / 51 x 66 cm). This is the most common sham size and works on any bed from twin to king. Most duvet sets that include shams come with two standard shams.

King Sham

Fits a king pillow (20" x 36" / 51 x 91 cm). Use these on a king bed where standard shams look too small against the wider mattress. Two king shams span the full width of a king bed nicely.

Euro Sham

A large square sham (26" x 26" / 66 x 66 cm). Euro shams lean against the headboard behind your standard or king shams, adding height and a layered look. They are the single biggest visual upgrade you can make to a bed. Two Euro shams on a queen, three on a king.

Boudoir Sham

A small rectangular decorative pillow (12" x 16" / 30 x 41 cm). These go at the very front of the pillow arrangement as an accent piece. One boudoir sham centred in front of the standard shams finishes the look. Completely optional.

How Many Pillows by Bed Size

  • Twin: 1 sleeping pillow + 1 standard sham + 1 Euro sham (behind). Total: 3 pillows on the bed.
  • Double/Full: 2 sleeping pillows + 2 standard shams + 2 Euro shams. Total: 6 pillows.
  • Queen: 2 sleeping pillows + 2 standard shams + 2 Euro shams + optional 1 accent. Total: 6-7 pillows.
  • King: 2 sleeping pillows + 2 king shams + 3 Euro shams + optional 1 accent. Total: 7-8 pillows.

How to Style Your Bed with Shams and Bedroom Pillows

Step 1: Start with the Euro Shams Against the Headboard

Stand them upright, leaning against the headboard or wall. These create the backdrop. If you have an upholstered headboard, the fabric-on-fabric creates a cohesive look. For a queen bed, use two. For a king, use three.

Step 2: Layer Standard or King Shams in Front

Place your decorative shams in front of the Euro shams, angled slightly forward. These should be in the same fabric family as your duvet cover or in a coordinating colour. Do not match everything exactly. A slight variation (same colour family, different texture) looks more intentional than identical fabrics.

Step 3: Sleeping Pillows Go Behind Everything

Your actual sleeping pillows in plain pillowcases go flat behind the Euro shams, hidden from view. At night, you remove the decorative pillows and your sleeping pillows are right there, ready to go.

Step 4: Optional Accent Pillow at the Front

A small lumbar pillow, boudoir sham, or throw pillow ($34.99) centred at the front adds a finishing touch. This is where you can introduce a pattern or pop of colour without committing to a full bedding change.

The whole arrangement takes about 90 seconds once you have done it a few times. At night, pick up the decorative pillows, put them on a nearby chair or bench, and go to bed. In the morning, reverse the process. It is not the 15-minute hotel bed-making ritual people imagine.

Duvet Sets and Bedding Sets Explained

Bedding is sold in two ways: as coordinated sets or as individual pieces. Here is what each type of set typically includes.

Duvet Cover Set

Usually includes: 1 duvet cover + 2 pillow shams (or pillowcases). You supply the duvet insert separately. This is the most common way to buy bedroom linen in Canada. Duvet sets let you change the look of your bed seasonally by swapping the cover while keeping the same insert year-round.

Comforter Set

Usually includes: 1 comforter (pre-filled, no separate insert needed) + 2 pillow shams + sometimes a bed skirt or decorative pillows. Comforter sets are more affordable upfront because the comforter and cover are one piece. The downside is washing: you have to launder the entire comforter, which is bulky and may not fit in a home washing machine. A duvet with a removable cover is easier to maintain.

Sheet Set

Usually includes: 1 fitted sheet + 1 flat sheet + 2 pillowcases (4 pillowcases for king sets from some brands). Sheet sets are sold separately from duvet sets. Our sheet collection includes cotton, bamboo, and linen options. For percale sheets that get softer with every wash, see the cotton percale sheets guide.

Comforter Covers vs. Duvet Covers

These terms get used interchangeably, but there is a practical difference. A duvet cover is designed to enclose a duvet insert (a plain white down or down-alternative fill). A comforter cover wraps around an existing comforter to protect it and change its appearance.

Functionally, they are the same product: a large fabric envelope with a closure (buttons, ties, or zipper) on one end. The difference is what goes inside. If you already own a comforter you like but want to change the look, a "comforter cover" (which is just a duvet cover by another name) lets you do that without buying new bedding.

The Bamboo Linen Duvet Cover ($164 twin to $240 extra king) works as both. It fits standard duvet inserts and most comforters within 5 cm of the same dimensions. The bamboo-linen blend breathes well for hot sleepers and resists wrinkles better than pure cotton.

Building a Bedding Set from Scratch

If you are starting fresh, here is a practical buying order that avoids waste and keeps costs reasonable.

Bedding Essentials by Priority

  • 1. Mattress protector: Protects your investment. A waterproof protector prevents stains and extends mattress life by years. Buy this first.
  • 2. Sheet set: One good set to start, add a second for rotation. Cotton Bliss Organic ($30) or Egyptian Cotton ($90-$150) depending on budget.
  • 3. Duvet insert + cover: A quality down-alternative or Hutterite down duvet with a washable cover. This is the visual centrepiece of the bed.
  • 4. Two sleeping pillows: Matched to your sleep position. Side sleepers need thicker, back sleepers need thinner. The True North Adjustable ($89) lets you add or remove fill.
  • 5. Shams and Euro pillows: The styling layer. Add when budget allows. This is where the bed goes from "made" to "finished."
  • 6. Throw pillow or accent: Completely optional. One good throw pillow ($34.99) adds personality without clutter.

Total cost for a queen bed with good-quality bedding: $400-$800 depending on how premium you go on sheets and duvet. That is less than most people spend on a single piece of living room furniture, and you spend a third of your life in bed.

Caring for Shams and Decorative Pillows

Because shams do not contact your skin directly, they need far less washing than sheets and pillowcases.

  • Wash shams every 3-6 months or when visibly soiled. Use cold water and a gentle cycle.
  • Fluff decorative pillow inserts in the dryer on no-heat for 10 minutes monthly to maintain their shape.
  • Rotate Euro shams quarterly so they wear evenly (swap left and right positions).
  • Store seasonal shams in a breathable cotton bag, not plastic. Plastic traps moisture and causes yellowing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are shams in bedding?

Shams are decorative pillow covers with a flanged border and back closure, designed to dress up a bed during the day. Unlike pillowcases, you do not sleep on shams. They cover decorative pillow inserts that sit in front of your sleeping pillows and get removed at bedtime.

What is the difference between a sham and a pillowcase?

A pillowcase is a plain fabric sleeve you sleep on every night. A sham has a decorative border (flange), a back closure (envelope or zipper), and is used for display only. Pillowcases need washing weekly. Shams need washing every few months since they do not contact your face or hair.

What is included in a duvet set?

A typical duvet set includes one duvet cover and two pillow shams or pillowcases. The duvet insert is sold separately. Some premium sets add Euro shams or decorative pillows. Check the piece count before buying, as "bedding set" and "duvet set" can mean different things depending on the brand.

How many bedroom pillows should I put on my bed?

For a queen bed, six to seven pillows creates a finished hotel look: two sleeping pillows (hidden behind), two standard shams, two Euro shams against the headboard, and optionally one accent pillow at the front. For a twin, three pillows is plenty. More than eight starts looking cluttered.

Can I use a duvet cover as a comforter cover?

Yes. A duvet cover and comforter cover are functionally the same product, a fabric envelope with a closure. If your existing comforter fits within the cover's dimensions (within 5 cm), it will work. This is a budget-friendly way to refresh your bedroom look without replacing the fill.
