Canadian Mattress Sizes at a Glance

Before we talk about adjustable bed compatibility, here are the standard Canadian mattress sizes you will encounter. These dimensions are industry standard, though real-world measurements sometimes vary by half an inch or so depending on the manufacturer.

One detail that catches people off guard: a standard Canadian twin is 75 inches long, but a twin XL is 80 inches. That five-inch difference matters when you are matching a mattress to an adjustable base, because most adjustable bases are built to the XL length.

Which Sizes Work with Adjustable Bed Frames

Not every mattress size has a corresponding adjustable base. Here is what is commonly available in Canada and what is harder to find.

Twin XL: The Starting Point

Twin XL is the standard single-person adjustable bed size. At 38 by 80 inches, it matches the base dimensions of most adjustable frames perfectly. If you are buying an adjustable bed for one person, a guest room, or one half of a split king setup, twin XL is the size to look for.

Standard twin (38 by 75 inches) adjustable bases do exist, but they are less common. The five-inch difference in length matters. A 75-inch mattress on an 80-inch base leaves a gap at the foot that looks and feels awkward. A standard twin mattress on a twin XL base will work mechanically, but the fit is not ideal.

Queen: The Most Popular

Queen is the most common adjustable bed size in Canada, which makes sense because queen is also the most popular mattress size. At 60 by 80 inches, a queen adjustable base fits one person generously or two people who do not mind adjusting together. Both partners move when the base adjusts, which is fine for some couples and a dealbreaker for others.

King: Room to Spread Out

A king adjustable base is a single platform at 76 by 80 inches. Like a queen, both sides adjust together. King adjustable bases are heavier and more expensive, but the extra width is noticeable for couples. The motors need to handle more weight (the mattress alone weighs more in king), so look for bases with higher weight capacity ratings.

Double: Limited Options

Double (or full) size adjustable bases are relatively uncommon in Canada. The 54 by 75 inch format is an awkward middle ground: too narrow for most couples on an adjustable base, and the 75-inch length does not match the 80-inch standard that most adjustable frame manufacturers build to. If you have a double mattress, you may need to upgrade to queen when moving to an adjustable base.

California King: Niche but Available

Cal king adjustable bases (72 by 84 inches) exist but are specialty items. Not every retailer stocks them. The extra four inches of length appeals to very tall sleepers, but availability of compatible mattresses is narrower.

The Split King Question

Split king is one of the most asked-about configurations in our Brantford showroom, and it deserves its own section because it is often misunderstood.

A split king is not a single product. It is two twin XL adjustable bases placed side by side, with two twin XL mattresses on top. Together, they create the same 76 by 80 inch footprint as a standard king. But each side operates independently.

This means one partner can raise the head to read while the other sleeps flat. One can use zero gravity position for back pain while the other prefers a slight incline for acid reflux. For couples with different sleep needs, it is genuinely useful.

People are more comfortable acknowledging that couples do not always sleep the same way, and that is okay."

Split King Considerations

Bedding: Regular king sheets will not work because the two mattresses move independently. You need two sets of twin XL fitted sheets. King-size flat sheets and duvets still work on top.

The gap: Two mattresses side by side create a small gap in the middle. Some manufacturers sell gap fillers (foam strips or bridges) that minimise this. It is a minor issue for most couples but worth knowing about.

Cost: A split king setup requires two bases and two mattresses, so the cost is roughly double a single queen. Which Mattresses Actually Flex on an Adjustable Base

Size is only half the compatibility equation. The mattress must also physically bend with the base as it moves. Not all mattresses can do this.

Works well:

• Hybrid mattresses: Combine pocket coils with foam layers. The coil base flexes while the foam conforms. Excellent on adjustable bases.

Does not work:

• Traditional innerspring with interconnected coils (Bonnell coils): The connected wire grid resists bending and can be damaged by an adjustable base. This is the mattress type most likely to be incompatible.
• Very thick pillow tops: Some heavy pillow top mattresses exceed the bend radius of adjustable bases, especially at steep angles. The mattress bunches at the fold point instead of curving smoothly.
• Mattresses over 14 inches thick: Extremely thick mattresses can struggle to flex without the comfort layers separating or bunching. Most adjustable-compatible mattresses are 10 to 13 inches.

How to Measure Before You Buy

A few measurements taken before you shop can save a return trip and a lot of frustration.

Measure your bedroom doorways. An adjustable base box is typically 120 to 150 centimetres long. Measure every doorway between your front entrance and the bedroom. If any are under 75 centimetres wide, let the retailer know so the delivery team can plan accordingly.

Measure the space where the bed will go. An adjustable bed needs clearance behind the headboard wall when the head section rises. Wall-hugging bases need less clearance (about 10 centimetres), while standard bases need 30 to 40 centimetres. Measure the distance from the wall to where the head of the mattress sits.

Measure your current mattress. Do not trust the label size. Grab a tape measure and check the actual width and length. Manufacturing tolerances mean a "queen" mattress might be 59.5 inches wide instead of 60. On a flat frame, that half inch is invisible. On an adjustable base, it can mean the mattress shifts.

Note your ceiling height if in a basement bedroom. When an adjustable base raises the head section, the total height increases. A queen mattress on an adjustable base with the head fully raised can reach 120 to 140 centimetres at the peak. In a standard room, that is no issue. In a basement with 200-centimetre ceilings, check that you have enough headroom.
