Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, but the reason it is worth discussing today is not tradition. It is the quality of recent clinical research. Over the past decade, a significant number of randomised controlled trials have examined ashwagandha's effects on sleep, and the results are more consistent than most people expect from a herbal supplement.

Whether ashwagandha will help your sleep depends on why your sleep is difficult in the first place. This guide explains the evidence, the limitations, and what you can realistically expect.

What Is Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small shrub native to India, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. It belongs to a class of plants called adaptogens, which are substances studied for their ability to help the body manage stress responses. The active compounds are primarily withanolides, a family of steroidal lactones concentrated in the root.

Commercial ashwagandha supplements vary considerably in quality and standardisation. The most rigorously studied extracts are:

How Ashwagandha May Help Sleep

Ashwagandha does not work like a sedative or sleep aid. It does not directly induce drowsiness. The proposed mechanisms are more indirect:

Cortisol Reduction

Cortisol is a stress hormone that follows a daily rhythm: it peaks in the early morning and gradually decreases through the day, reaching its lowest point in the first hours of sleep. In people experiencing chronic stress, this rhythm can flatten or invert, keeping cortisol elevated into the evening when it should be declining. Elevated evening cortisol is a well-documented barrier to sleep onset.

Multiple trials have found that ashwagandha supplementation reduces serum cortisol levels, particularly in adults with self-reported stress. If elevated cortisol is part of why you are lying awake, this mechanism is clinically plausible.

GABA Receptor Activity

Animal studies and some human data suggest that withanolides may modulate GABA-A receptors, the same receptors targeted by benzodiazepine medications. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain and plays a direct role in relaxation and sleep onset. This mechanism is less well-established in humans than the cortisol pathway, but it may explain why some people report a subjective calming effect.

Anxiety Reduction

The most consistent finding across ashwagandha research is anxiety reduction. A 2021 systematic review of seven randomised controlled trials (PMID 32242751) found statistically significant reductions in perceived stress and anxiety across all included studies. Since anxiety is among the most common drivers of sleep difficulties, reducing it is a plausible sleep-improvement pathway even if the direct sedative mechanism is modest.

Why "adaptogen" is a useful concept here: The idea behind adaptogens is not that they push a single physiological parameter in one direction but that they help the body return to a calibrated baseline. For cortisol, this means they may reduce abnormally high levels without lowering cortisol below healthy norms. This is clinically relevant because it is different from pharmaceutical sleep aids, which often push sedation without addressing the underlying stress physiology.

The clinical evidence for ashwagandha and sleep is more substantial than for most herbal supplements. Here are the most relevant published trials:

Langade et al. (2021), PMID 32818573

A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study evaluating ashwagandha root extract on sleep quality in both healthy adults and people with diagnosed insomnia. Participants took standardised ashwagandha or placebo for 8 weeks. The trial found statistically significant improvements across all sleep parameters measured: sleep onset latency (p less than 0.0001), total sleep time (p less than 0.002), sleep efficiency (p less than 0.0001), and wake after sleep onset (p less than 0.040). Improvements were greater in the insomnia group than the healthy adult group, suggesting the supplement may be more useful for people with identified sleep dysfunction than as a general enhancement for people already sleeping reasonably well.

Always take ashwagandha with food. Some people experience mild nausea or stomach discomfort when taking it on an empty stomach.

Benefits for Women and Men

The question of whether ashwagandha benefits differ by sex comes up frequently, and the research is beginning to address it more directly.

Ashwagandha benefits for women that have been studied include reductions in perceived stress, improvements in sexual function and satisfaction (in a 2015 trial), and some evidence for supporting thyroid function in subclinical hypothyroidism. Perimenopausal and menopausal women may find the cortisol-balancing effects particularly relevant, since stress hormones and sleep disruption are common during this phase. However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take ashwagandha due to insufficient safety data and historical evidence of uterotonic effects in high doses.

For men, ashwagandha benefits have been studied in the context of testosterone, fertility, and physical performance. A small number of trials have found modest increases in testosterone in men with low baseline levels, and improvements in sperm quality. The research here is less robust than the stress and sleep evidence. Thyroid conditions: Ashwagandha may alter thyroid hormone levels (T3 and T4). People taking thyroid medication should consult their doctor before use and monitor their thyroid levels.

Benzodiazepines and CNS depressants: The potential GABA-A modulating activity means there is a theoretical interaction with benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and other central nervous system depressants. Combining them without medical guidance is not advisable.

Immunosuppressants: The immune-modulating properties may reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressant drugs.
