Most people have never heard of ASTM F1566, which is a shame because it's one of the most useful specs you can ask about when mattress shopping. Why Standardized Testing Matters
Without standardized tests, "durability" is whatever the manufacturer says it is. ASTM F1566 provides a common measurement framework that lets you compare a $500 mattress to a $2,000 mattress on the same terms. It's the same principle as EPA fuel economy ratings for cars. A mattress protector can extend mattress life by 2-3 years by keeping moisture out of the foam layers. Proper foundation support also matters. A mattress on a sagging box spring or insufficient slats will develop body impressions faster regardless of its F1566 results.
