Bedroom Essentials Checklist for a New Home in Canada: What to Buy First

Quick Answer: When furnishing a bedroom from scratch in Canada, buy in this order: mattress and protector first (day one), then pillows and sheets (day one), then a bed frame (week one), then curtains, duvet, and nightstands (month one). Budget $1,500 to $3,000 for a complete starter bedroom. Spend the most on the mattress, which you will use for 8 to 10 years, and less on items you can upgrade later.

The Priority Order (Buy This First)

Moving into a new home is expensive. Everything seems urgent and you cannot buy it all at once. Here is the order that makes the most practical sense, based on what you actually need on night one versus what can wait.

Priority Item When You Need It Why This Order
1 Mattress Day one You need to sleep tonight
2 Mattress protector Day one Goes on before any bedding, protects your investment
3 Pillows (2) Day one Cannot sleep without head support
4 Sheets (1 set minimum) Day one Basic hygiene and comfort
5 Bed frame Week one Mattress works on the floor temporarily
6 Duvet or comforter Week one A blanket works temporarily
7 Curtains or blinds Week one to two Light control improves sleep dramatically
8 Nightstand Month one Useful but not urgent
9 Dresser or wardrobe Month one Clothes can live in boxes briefly
10 Second sheet set, extra pillows Month one to two Rotation extends lifespan

This is not a list of everything you will eventually want. It is a list of what to buy first when you are moving in and the budget is stretched.

Priority 1: The Mattress

The mattress is the most important purchase in the bedroom and it should get the largest share of your budget. You will spend more time on your mattress than on any other piece of furniture in your home. A good mattress lasts 8 to 10 years. A cheap mattress that ruins your sleep costs you every single night.

What Size?

If you are buying for one adult, a queen (60 by 80 inches) is the standard recommendation. It gives you room to move without taking up as much space as a king. For couples, queen is the minimum. A king (76 by 80 inches) is better if your bedroom is at least 12 by 12 feet.

For a teen or guest room, a twin XL or full works well depending on the room size and intended use. Check our Canadian mattress size guide if you are not sure.

What to Spend

In Canada, expect to pay $700 to $2,000 for a quality queen mattress that lasts. Under $700 and you are likely getting materials that break down within 3 to 5 years. Over $2,000 and you are paying for premium features that are nice but not necessary for good sleep.

At Mattress Miracle, our Restonic ComfortCare Queen at $1,125 (1,222 pocketed coils) is where we start most new homeowners. It is our best value: good support, good durability, and a price point that leaves room in the budget for the rest of the bedroom.

Brad, Owner since 1987: "When someone walks in and says they just bought a house and need everything, I tell them the same thing every time: spend the most on the mattress, spend the least on the nightstand. The mattress affects your health. The nightstand holds your phone."

Timing Your Purchase

If possible, buy the mattress before moving day and have it delivered to the new address. This way you sleep on your new mattress the first night instead of the floor. Most Canadian mattress stores, including ours in Brantford, let you schedule delivery for a specific date.

Priority 2: Protector and Pillows

Mattress Protector

Put the protector on before the first sheet, before the first night. This is non-negotiable.

A mattress protector serves two purposes. First, it keeps sweat, spills, and skin oils out of the mattress, which extends its life and prevents the buildup of dust mites and bacteria. Second, most mattress warranties require a protector. If you stain the mattress and later need a warranty claim, the manufacturer may deny it.

Protectors cost $40 to $80 for a queen. This is the cheapest insurance you will buy for a $1,000 or more mattress.

Pillows

You need at least two pillows per person on day one. One for sleeping on, one as a backup or for positioning. Do not overthink this initially. A decent pillow costs $30 to $60. If you are a side sleeper, go medium to high loft. If you are a back sleeper, go medium. If you are a stomach sleeper, go low and soft.

You can upgrade to premium pillows later when you have more budget. What matters now is having something supportive under your head tonight.

Priority 3: Sheets and Basic Bedding

Sheets

One set is the minimum. Two sets is ideal because it lets you wash one while using the other. For a Canadian home, start with cotton percale or a cotton blend with a thread count between 200 and 400. Ignore anything marketed as "1,000 thread count" at a suspiciously low price, as the thread count is likely inflated through multi-ply counting.

What to include in a sheet set:

  • 1 fitted sheet (check the pocket depth matches your mattress height)
  • 1 flat sheet
  • 2 pillowcases

Budget $50 to $120 per queen set in Canada. You can find decent cotton sheets at that price point. Linen and bamboo sheets are lovely but not a priority when you are furnishing from scratch.

A Blanket or Throw

On night one, a warm blanket works while you wait for a duvet to arrive. Bring one from your old place or buy an inexpensive fleece throw for $20 to $30. It does the job temporarily and later becomes a spare for the sofa.

Priority 4: Bed Frame

Here is a truth that may surprise you: your mattress works on the floor. It is not ideal long-term (airflow underneath prevents moisture buildup), but for the first few nights or even weeks, a mattress on the floor with clean sheets is a perfectly functional sleeping arrangement. Do not rush into a frame you do not love just because you feel pressured to have one immediately.

Frame Options by Budget

Frame Type Price Range (Queen) Best For
Basic metal frame with headboard brackets $80 to $150 Immediate, functional setup
Simple platform bed (no box spring needed) $200 to $500 Modern look, saves cost of box spring
Upholstered platform bed $400 to $800 Bedroom centrepiece, soft look
Solid wood frame (Lakewood maple, oak) $800 to $2,000 Long-term investment, heirloom quality
Adjustable base $995 to $2,200 Reading in bed, health benefits, couples

If you are buying a platform bed, you do not need a box spring, which saves $200 to $400. This is a meaningful saving when you are furnishing an entire home. Read our bed frame assembly guide before you buy, so you know what tools you need.

For New Brantford Homeowners: If you are moving to Brantford from the GTA (as many new residents are), the bedroom dimensions in Brantford homes can be different from what you are used to. Older homes in neighbourhoods like Eagle Place, West Brant, and Holmedale often have smaller bedrooms than newer subdivisions. Measure your bedroom before buying a frame, especially if you are eyeing a king. And if you are furnishing multiple bedrooms (master plus guest or kids' rooms), ask about our multi-room pricing when you visit our showroom on West Street.

Priority 5: Curtains and Lighting

Curtains

Light is the single biggest environmental factor affecting sleep quality. If your bedroom has no curtains, streetlights, car headlights, and early morning sun will all disrupt your sleep. Blackout curtains are not a luxury. They are a sleep tool.

In Brantford, summer sunrise is before 6 a.m. by June. Without blackout curtains, your body starts waking up at first light whether you intend to or not. Good blackout curtains cost $40 to $100 per window and make an immediate difference.

Lighting

You need two types of light in a bedroom:

  • Overhead light: Already installed in most homes. If not, a simple flush-mount fixture costs $30 to $60.
  • Bedside lamp: Critical for reading and for avoiding overhead light in the hour before bed. Warm-toned bulbs (2700K or lower) support melatonin production. LED bulbs marked "soft white" or "warm white" are what you want.

Priority 6: Bedroom Furniture

Furniture comes last because it is the easiest thing to live without temporarily. You can fold clothes on a shelf, stack books on the floor, and charge your phone on a cardboard box while you save up for the pieces you actually want.

Nightstand

A small table next to the bed is genuinely useful. It holds your water glass, phone, book, and alarm clock. But it does not need to be expensive or match anything at first. A simple shelf or even a sturdy stool works.

Dresser

If you have a closet with built-in shelving, you may not need a dresser immediately. If your closet is just a rail, a dresser or chest of drawers becomes more important.

We carry Lakewood solid wood furniture (Canadian maple, oak, pine) and Charlotte bedroom sets at our Brantford showroom. IFDC offers more affordable options. All are available for white glove delivery.

What Can Wait

These are nice to have but not urgent: a bench at the foot of the bed, a full-length mirror, a bedroom chair, decorative throw pillows, a headboard (if your frame does not include one). Add these as budget allows. There is no rush.

Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "When young couples come in furnishing their first Brantford home, I always start with the same question: what is keeping you awake right now? Usually it is not the lack of a dresser. It is a bad mattress from their last apartment, no curtains, or pillows that have been compressed flat. Solve the sleep problems first, decorate later."

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should you budget for a bedroom setup in Canada?

A complete bedroom setup in Canada ranges from roughly $1,500 for a starter budget (mattress, basic frame, sheets, pillows, protector) to $5,000 or more for a premium setup with a quality mattress, solid wood furniture, adjustable base, and high-end bedding. The mattress should get the largest share of your budget since it has the biggest impact on sleep quality and lasts 8 to 10 years.

What is the first thing to buy for a new bedroom?

Buy the mattress and protector first. Everything else can wait a few days or weeks, but you need somewhere to sleep on night one. A mattress protector should go on before the first night, because stains from the very first use can void warranty coverage and the protector is much easier to put on an empty mattress.

Do you need a box spring with a new mattress in Canada?

Not necessarily. If you have a platform bed or a slatted frame with slats spaced 3 inches or less apart, you do not need a box spring. Many modern mattresses, especially foam and hybrid models, are designed to work without one. A box spring is needed if you have a simple metal frame that has no slats, or if you want to raise the bed height.

Should you buy a mattress before or after moving in Canada?

Buy after you have access to the home but before moving day if possible. This lets you measure the bedroom, check doorway widths for delivery, and have the mattress delivered and set up before you move in your other furniture. Many Canadian mattress stores, including ours in Brantford, can arrange delivery to your new home on a date you choose.
