  2. Mouth closure. Mechanically keep the lower jaw from dropping open, which can reduce certain kinds of snoring and mouth breathing.
  3. Jaw advancement or tongue positioning. Pull the lower jaw or tongue slightly forward to open the airway.
  4. Monitoring only. Track snoring sounds and body position, feeding data back to a phone app for later review. These devices do not intervene while you sleep.

The best device depends on why you snore, and almost nobody knows why they snore without either sleeping next to a partner who has observed it or running a home sleep test.

Snoring basics: Snoring is the vibration of relaxed soft tissues in the throat, soft palate, and tongue base as air passes through a partially obstructed upper airway during sleep. Position, weight, alcohol, nasal congestion, jaw anatomy, and airway muscle tone all contribute. Some cases are harmless; others are the audible surface of obstructive sleep apnea, which is a different and more serious condition.

Positional Therapy: The Category With the Best Evidence

Of all the wearable categories, positional-therapy devices have the strongest published evidence. A 2019 meta-analysis of randomised trials found that vibrotactile positional devices reduced the apnea-hypopnea index by roughly 54 per cent on average and cut supine (back) sleeping time by 84 per cent in people whose sleep apnea was predominantly positional.

Two well-studied products dominate the literature: the Philips NightBalance and the Somnibel. Both detect when the wearer rolls onto their back and emit a small vibration that grows in intensity until the person shifts to their side. The vibration is calibrated to prompt a position change without fully waking the sleeper. Several studies show comparable outcomes to CPAP for mild-to-moderate positional obstructive sleep apnea, with much better user compliance because there is no mask or tubing involved.

For straight snoring, not apnea, the evidence is similar in direction but smaller. A 2022 randomised controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that a chest-worn positional device reduced snoring frequency by more than half in positional-dependent snorers over six weeks, with partners reporting meaningfully quieter nights.

Who this helps: people who snore mostly when lying on their back and are quiet or almost quiet on their side. If your partner can already confirm this pattern, a positional device is worth trying before a chin strap, a nasal strip, or a mandibular appliance.

Who it does not help: snorers whose volume is unchanged between back and side sleeping, and snorers whose apnea is not positional in nature.   3. Try side-sleeping. A tennis ball in a pocket sewn to the back of a pyjama top is the old-school positional therapy. It works surprisingly well for one to two weeks while you evaluate whether position alone is the issue.
