For critical listening, which is the actual work of mixing, editing, and mastering, you cannot have other music playing. Your ears are the instrument you are using. Playing background music during a mix decision is like trying to taste a wine while chewing gum.

For everything else in a session day, including file management, session setup, client emails, exporting bounces, driving between studios, and the long stretches of administrative work that pad out the creative hours, music does fit. Engineers still need a focus soundtrack for those hours. They just need to be more careful about it than most listeners.

The rules are different from what a writer or programmer might follow. An audio engineer's brain is trained to deconstruct music: to hear the kick drum frequency separately from the bass guitar, to notice reverb tails and stereo image width, to track compression and automation. A pop song that a casual listener hears as a cheerful thing is a stack of technical decisions to an engineer. That makes most "focus" playlists actively counterproductive in a mixing room.

A note on hearing preservation. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends limiting daily noise exposure to 85 dB averaged over 8 hours, with halving the exposure time for every 3 dB increase. Tinnitus is one of the leading occupational hazards in audio engineering, and it has a specific relationship with sleep.

In a quiet bedroom, with no competing sound, tinnitus is at its most noticeable. Engineers with moderate or severe tinnitus often report that silence itself becomes distressing because the ringing moves to the foreground. This is why many engineers sleep with low-level sound running at bedside, not because they love white noise but because total silence actively keeps them awake.

The sleep problem compounds itself. Poor sleep worsens ear fatigue the next day, which leads to longer sessions to compensate, which leads to worse fatigue. Many working engineers we have spoken to in the Brantford and Hamilton music scene describe exactly this cycle.

Music That Works During Non-Critical Editing Work

For the non-critical hours of a session day, here is what engineers we talk to report using. None of this works for a final mix decision, but all of it is fine for bouncing, exporting, editing timing, and doing paperwork.

  • Music in genres you do not work in. A hip-hop engineer listening to classical piano can relax analytical attention because the sonic palette is totally foreign to the workday. A metal engineer listening to jazz. A classical engineer listening to dub. Cross-genre choices disengage the professional analysis reflex.
  • Spoken-word content, for some engineers. Audiobooks, podcasts, documentaries. The language centres of the brain work differently from the auditory-spectral analysis centres, so listening to talk can engage one while resting the other. Not for everyone; some engineers find talk content more distracting than music.
  • Instrumental minimalism and ambient. Similar logic to the architecture studio: harmonically stable, non-dynamic, non-rhythmic enough to ignore. Stars of the Lid, William Basinski, Fennesz.
  • Very low volume. Whatever you listen to during non-critical hours should be quieter than a critical listening session, not louder. Treat it as a rest period for your ears, not a second listening environment.

Silence, a book, or non-musical sound is a different category.

Brown noise is a popular compromise for engineers with tinnitus. Its concentrated low-frequency content masks the ringing at specific frequencies without the spectrally-complex content that pulls analytical attention. Several free brown-noise apps and YouTube loops exist. Running brown noise at 30 to 40 dB for the first hour of sleep covers the tinnitus without replacing it with something equally brain-engaging.

Nature recordings work for some engineers. The unpredictable rhythm of rain on leaves or waves on a beach does not match any musical structure, so the engineer's brain does not try to analyse it. Make sure the recording is pure nature without a music track mixed in; many "rain and piano" tracks defeat the purpose.

Pure silence is the goal for engineers without significant tinnitus. A well-dampened bedroom, blackout curtains, and thick bedding that doesn't rustle can produce a quiet enough environment for a fatigued auditory system to reset fully. Monitoring Levels and Evening Ear Recovery

Every audio engineer we talk to about sleep ends up talking about monitoring levels. The engineers with the best sleep are consistently the ones with the most disciplined habits around SPL during the workday.

Three practical principles that extend to bedtime:

  • Run your mixing sessions at reference level. Most mastering engineers work at 78 to 85 dB SPL, not louder. A session run at 90 dB produces measurably worse mixing decisions and worse sleep afterward. If your room lets you listen louder, discipline matters more than capability.
  • Schedule your last critical listening at least two hours before bed. Your auditory system needs the equivalent of cool-down time. A final mix decision at 1 a.m. followed by bed at 2 a.m. produces shallow sleep and morning ear fatigue that carries into the next session.
  • Use a quieter alternative during the evening rest period. If you need to keep working in the studio after the critical work is done, drop the monitor level to 60 to 70 dB for routine tasks. Your ears partially recover even in the presence of low-level sound.
