Apps to be more sceptical of: any app claiming specific health benefits (curing insomnia, treating PTSD, generating specific emotional states), apps with no credentials on their science team, and apps that require expensive subscriptions for what are essentially free tone generators.

  • Use a sleep timer. Set the audio to fade out after 45 to 90 minutes, well past the sleep-onset window but before the first deep-sleep cycle ends. Continuing audio into deep sleep can cause light sleep fragmentation.
  • Keep volume very low. Sleep at under 50 dB is indefinitely safe for hearing. At much higher volumes, eight hours of nightly exposure accumulates. Binaural beats should be just audible, not engaging.
