The weave, meaning the geometric pattern of threads crossing each other, often determines breathability more than the fibre does. Two sheet sets made from the same cotton yarn can perform very differently depending on whether the yarn is woven in a percale or sateen pattern.
Here is why this matters. A percale weave is a simple one-over-one-under pattern, producing an open lattice of fabric with many small air gaps. A sateen weave floats four yarns over one, creating a denser, smoother surface with fewer air gaps. The same cotton yarn makes a much more breathable sheet in percale than in sateen. If your current sheets feel hot and are labelled sateen or sateen blend, swapping to percale in the same fibre will usually feel cooler immediately.

- The skin-contact test. Lay the fabric across the back of your hand for 10 seconds. If the fabric immediately feels warm against your skin, it is trapping heat. A cooling sheet should feel the same temperature as the room or slightly cooler, even after a full minute of contact.
