For listeners rather than chanters, the effect is smaller but present. Sympathetic resonance and breath entrainment can pull a listener's own respiration toward the chant's slower rhythm, which in turn engages the same vagal pathway.

The more passively you treat it, the less benefit you get. It is closer to a supervised practice than a product. Practical recorded-chant guidance

A three-step evening protocol

  • Choose one tradition for at least a week. Theravada Pali chant is often the gentlest starting point for Western listeners unfamiliar with chant audio. Tibetan throat-tone chant is powerful but intense; save it for later if you decide you like the practice.
  • Play the recording at very low volume. Chant is meant to be background, not foreground. If you can clearly identify specific words or pitches, the volume is too high.
  • Breathe with the recording for five minutes, then set a timer. The active participation in the first five minutes recruits the vagal pathway. Once the timer engages and you stop actively breathing with the audio, the entrainment effect continues at a lower level.

A note on cultural sensitivity. Chant audio is often recorded in active religious contexts. Many traditions welcome secular listeners; some expect respect for the source. And if you are expecting the audio to do the meditative work for you, listening passively without any breathing involvement, the effect will be too small to notice.
