Bonnell coils are large, taking up significant space. A queen Bonnell mattress typically has 300 to 500 coils. Pocket coils are smaller, individually wrapped, and can pack much more densely. A queen pocket coil mattress typically has 600 to 1,500 coils. If a retailer presents a 1,200-coil mattress as having superior quality to a 500-coil mattress without specifying coil type, they may be comparing two products that are not actually comparable.
A better question than "how many coils?" is "what kind of coils, what gauge, and what is the coil height?" These three numbers together tell you far more about the likely performance and lifespan of the mattress than the count alone.
