What they skip is the biology, understanding why certain materials host dust mites and others do not is the difference between a pillow choice that actually reduces your exposure and one that just sounds better.

What Dust Mites Are Actually Doing in Your Pillow
House dust mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and D. farinae) are microscopic arachnids, eight-legged relatives of spiders, invisible to the naked eye. A single pillow in regular use can harbour 100,000 to two million of them, depending on fill material, humidity, and cleaning frequency.
They do not bite. The problem is their waste. Each mite produces approximately 20 faecal pellets per day. The pellets contain proteins, primarily Der p 1 (from D. pteronyssinus) and Der f 1 (from D. farinae), that are potent respiratory allergens. When you move your pillow or sleep on it, these particles become airborne at face level. For sensitised individuals, repeated exposure triggers allergic rhinitis, eczema, and, most significantly, asthmatic responses.
Dust mites require two things to thrive: food and humidity. Their food source is shed human skin cells, roughly 1.5 grams per person per day, most of it deposited in bedding. Their humidity requirement is specific: they need relative humidity above 50% to absorb moisture from the air through their exoskeleton. Below 50% RH, they dehydrate and die within days.
The Canadian Context
Canadian indoor humidity varies considerably by season and housing type. In summer, many Canadian homes reach 60-70% indoor humidity without active management. In winter, central heating drops indoor humidity sharply, sometimes below 30%, which is actually protective against dust mites in the short term. The transition periods (spring, fall) and air-conditioned summers in Southern Ontario tend to sustain the humidity ranges that support mite populations. This biology determines why pillow material matters. A loosely packed fibre fill, polyester clusters, feathers, down, creates a warm, humid microenvironment among the fibres, provides abundant surface area for skin cell accumulation, and is difficult to wash to the temperatures required to kill mites. A solid latex pillow has no fibrous structure, no internal air pockets for humidity to pool, no surface area for skin cell accumulation beyond the cover, and does not hold moisture.
The Materials That Deny Them a Home
Not all "hypoallergenic" pillows resist dust mites through the same mechanism. The distinction matters.
Solid latex (best). Solid latex, both Talalay and Dunlop processes, has an inherently inhospitable structure for dust mites. The material is dense, does not fragment into particles that mites can colonise, and contains latex proteins that have natural antimicrobial and antimite properties. Mites require a fibrous or granular matrix to establish a population; solid latex denies this. This is a structural defence, not a chemical treatment.
Memory foam (good). Solid memory foam pillows share most of latex's structural advantages: dense, non-fibrous, no internal humidity accumulation. The main limitation is that some memory foam is shredded rather than solid, shredded foam creates micro-surfaces and internal spaces that are more hospitable than solid foam, though still significantly better than natural fibre fills.
Down alternative / synthetic fibre (limited). Down alternative pillows made from polyester fibres are marketed as hypoallergenic because they do not contain the bird proteins that cause reactions in some people. The Combined Defence
A dust-mite-proof pillow is the first layer. The full allergy-reduction protocol requires three layers working together:
