The metrics it produces include beat-to-beat heart rate, heart rate variability using both RMSSD and frequency-domain methods, respiratory rate, total movement, sleep stages, and a calculated recovery score. Data uploads to the Emfit cloud and is viewable through a web dashboard or the mobile app.

The product has been on the market since around 2014, with multiple hardware revisions. Emfit Ltd is a Finnish company with a 30-plus year history in piezoelectric sensor technology, originally developed for medical and institutional applications. The QS is the consumer version of technology used in some clinical and elder-care monitoring systems.

Every time your heart beats, your body experiences a tiny mechanical recoil. Every time you inhale or exhale, your chest cavity expands and contracts. Both motions transmit through the mattress as micro-vibrations.

The Emfit's piezoelectric sensor strip is sensitive enough to detect these vibrations through several inches of foam and coil. From the raw signal, software extracts heart rate, breath rate, and movement events. The Emfit has clear limitations worth knowing before purchase.

Sleep stage accuracy is mediocre. If you want reliable REM-vs-deep-vs-light differentiation, neither Emfit nor any current consumer device delivers PSG-grade results. Treat sleep-stage data as approximate.

Two-person bed motion artifact. If a partner shares the bed, motion from their side can affect your readings, especially during the periods when one partner moves and the other is still. Emfit handles this better than most under-mattress trackers but is not perfect.

Adjustable bed compatibility. The thin strip works with most adjustable bases but can produce noisy data during bed-position changes. Set your sleep position before falling asleep rather than adjusting throughout the night.

Cloud dependence. Data uploads to Emfit's servers; if their service ever shuts down, historical data access becomes a question mark. The device does store some data locally, but cloud is the primary access point.

Scenarios where Emfit is not the right purchase: casual sleep curiosity (a free phone app suffices), serious sleep-disorder evaluation (see a sleep clinic, not consumer hardware), or anyone who wants daytime metrics integrated with sleep (a smartwatch makes more sense).
