Why the Kelvin number matters
Colour temperature is not subjective. It is measured in Kelvin (K), a physical unit that describes how warm (orange) or cool (blue) a light source appears. Standard daylight sits around 5500 to 6500K. A candle flame sits around 1800K. Every bulb you buy has a Kelvin rating printed on the box, usually in small type.
Your brain reads this number, biologically, through melanopsin-containing retinal cells. Cool (blue-heavy) light at night suppresses melatonin and tells the circadian clock "it is daytime, stay alert." Warm (orange-heavy) light does the opposite: melatonin rises, the nervous system shifts toward rest. The research is unambiguous.
The Harvard finding and the biology behind it
Harvard Medical School research reported that people exposed to warm evening light fell asleep an average of 19 minutes faster than those exposed to cool evening light. The underlying mechanism: intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are most sensitive to short-wavelength blue light around 460 to 480 nm, which is abundant in cool light sources and minimal in warm ones. Health Canada's indoor environment guidance, the Sleep Foundation, and the Canadian Sleep Society all recommend warm, dim evening lighting as a standard sleep-hygiene measure. A 2023 review in the PMC archive on circadian lighting summarised the dose-response curve: the warmer and dimmer the evening, the faster the sleep onset.

Why 6500K is wrong for bedrooms
Daylight-balanced bulbs around 6500K (sometimes marketed as "daylight" or "cool daylight") are ideal for photography, medical exam rooms, and noon office work. They suppress melatonin reliably. They have no place in a bedroom ever, not even during the day. Customers who inherited 6500K overhead LEDs from a previous owner and report "the bedroom feels harsh" are correct: the colour temperature is literally wrong for the room.
4000K (cool white) : the quiet bedroom mistake
Why 4000K is the sneakiest problem
4000K is the default for most big-box store "cool white" or "neutral white" bulbs. It is fine for kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and home offices. It is wrong for bedrooms. The trouble is that 4000K does not feel dramatically cold; it feels crisp and clean. Many homeowners install 4000K overhead LEDs and never realise the evening use of that fixture is pushing their bedtime back. If the bedroom ceiling light is 4000K, swap the bulbs. It is a 20 dollar fix that measurably improves sleep.
3000K (soft white) : acceptable, not ideal
Where 3000K fits
3000K is the middle-ground "soft white" that many households default to. For a bedroom, it is acceptable. It is warmer than 4000K and does less melatonin damage. But it is not optimal. If you are doing a lighting refresh, 2700K costs the same and works better. If you already have 3000K in place, the benefit of downgrading to 2700K is real but modest. Dimmable 3000K bulbs on a low setting perform nearly as well as 2700K, because dimming an LED shifts it subtly warmer.
2700K (warm white) : the target
The sleep-friendly default
- Most sleep experts recommend 2700K for bedroom lighting. It approximates the colour temperature of the setting sun and of traditional incandescent bulbs, which is the light your ancestors evolved around in the evening.
- Melatonin production is largely protected. Cortisol stays low. The nervous system shifts toward rest.
- Applies to all fixtures. Table lamps, reading lights, bedside sconces, globe lights overhead, vanity bulbs. All 2700K for the room.
- Widely available and affordable. Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Rona, IKEA all carry 2700K LEDs in every base type. Look for "warm white" or "soft white" at 2700K specifically, not just "warm" without a number.
- Dimmable where possible. A 2700K bulb on a dimmer gives you the full evening range from morning-bright to near-candle.
If you are buying globe-style bedroom fixtures (the popular "cluster of frosted orb" chandeliers and sconces), look for decorative bulbs at 2700K with a low CRI penalty. Edison-style LED globes are widely sold at 2200 to 2700K specifically for warmth. Avoid "vintage" tinted glass that pushes the light amber on top of an already-warm bulb; double amber can make the room feel unnaturally orange.
1800 to 2200K (candle) : the final hour
The deep-warm layer
Below 2200K, you are in candle-flame territory. Some high-end smart bulbs (Philips Hue, LIFX) can dim all the way down to about 1800K, simulating candlelight. Actual candles sit right around this range too. For the final 30 to 60 minutes before bed, this is the optimal indoor light environment. Warmer than sunset. Very dim. No blue component at all. Melatonin has a clear path. Sleep pressure builds. If you cannot afford smart bulbs, a wax candle or a warm-filament salt lamp does essentially the same thing; just mind the fire hazard. The best bedrooms do not use a single light source. They layer multiple warm sources at different intensities so the evening transition is gradual.
