If you have allergies or asthma and you're shopping for sheets, you have probably seen "hypoallergenic" on dozens of products. Cotton, bamboo, microfibre, lyocell, all claim it. The problem is that the term has no legal definition in Canada, no standardized specification, and no verification requirement. A manufacturer can print "hypoallergenic" on any bedding product with no obligation to test it against anything.

This article covers what the research actually shows about allergens in bedding, which variables reduce them, and why some popular claims, particularly around bamboo sheets, are not supported by the peer-reviewed literature.

What "Hypoallergenic" Actually Means Legally

A systematic review published in the Journal of Dermatologic Treatment (PMID 29671667) found that "hypoallergenic" is not regulated by any governing body. The review covered cosmetics and OTC dermatologic products, but the conclusion applies equally to textiles in Canada. Health Canada has no standard definition for the term on bedding products. The FTC in the United States has issued guidance, not binding regulation, on bamboo textile claims but no enforceable standard for "hypoallergenic" on sheets.

That means when a brand calls its sheets "hypoallergenic," it means exactly whatever they have decided it means. Sometimes it means the sheets are free of chemical dyes or finishes. Sometimes it means the fibre is marketed as naturally antimicrobial. Sometimes it means nothing specific at all. The term does not require testing against any allergen or mite standard.

What Dust Mite Allergens Actually Do

A 2025 review (PMC12193404) confirms that Der p 1, Der p 2, and Der p 23 from Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (the European house dust mite, most common in Canada) are major drivers of allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. The same review notes that allergen-specific immunotherapy is the only disease-modifying treatment available, making source reduction in the bedroom the primary environmental management strategy. Earlier research (PMC5265905) found the highest Der p 1 concentrations in children's homes were on the top surface of mattresses, directly beneath where the child sleeps. Sheets sit between that surface and the sleeper, making them both a carrier and a potential barrier.

The Dust Mite Allergen Problem in Bedding

Dust mites are 0.2-0.3 mm arachnids that feed on skin cells shed during sleep. A mattress that has been used for several years can contain tens of thousands of mites. Their primary allergens are in their faecal particles, which are roughly 10-40 micrometres in diameter. These particles are small enough to become airborne and inhaled, which is why symptoms are worst in the bedroom and first thing in the morning.

Sheets accumulate both live mites and allergen particles. The primary question for sheets is whether the weave is tight enough to prevent passage of mites and their allergen particles through the fabric, and whether washing removes what accumulates.

Pore Size: The Variable That Actually Matters

Research comparing encasement materials for allergen impermeability (PMID 14510714) found that the critical variable is not the fibre source but the pore size, the gap between threads in the finished fabric. Ranked from most to least effective as allergen barriers: plastic covers, polyurethane-coated covers, non-woven covers, tightly woven microfibre, and regular cotton sheets at the least effective end.

Regular cotton sheets, including high thread count options, "allow a significant amount of leakage of mite allergens." The inter-fibre pores in standard woven cotton are large enough that both mites and their allergen particles pass through without resistance.

Clinically effective allergen encasements are tested to pore sizes of 2-6 micrometres. Standard consumer sheets are not tested to any pore-size specification. A 600 thread count sateen sheet and a purpose-made allergen-barrier encasement are not equivalent products. The sateen sheet may feel luxurious, but the pore size is not controlled to the specification that allergen barriers require.

An RCT of 52 asthmatic patients using allergen-impermeable covers (PMID 15480327) found the covers reduced Der p 1 by 87% and produced a significant improvement in morning peak expiratory flow compared to controls. That is clinical evidence for encasements specifically, not sheets. The most effective allergen-reduction intervention for a sleeping environment is a properly fitted allergen-barrier cover on the mattress and pillows, washed weekly at the right temperature.

Bamboo Sheets: What the Claims Don't Tell You

Bamboo sheets are marketed with two main health claims: they are hypoallergenic, and they have natural antimicrobial properties. Both claims require unpacking.

Most products sold as "bamboo sheets" are viscose-from-bamboo, a regenerated cellulose fibre. The manufacturing process dissolves raw bamboo pulp using sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide, then extrudes it through spinnerets to form fibres. The resulting fibre is chemically similar to any other viscose or rayon. The botanical origin, bamboo, is irrelevant once the cellulose has been dissolved and reconstituted.

Raw bamboo does contain a natural bio-agent sometimes called "bamboo kun" that has antimicrobial properties in the living plant. This agent is destroyed during the viscose manufacturing process. Research on bamboo cellulose fibres found that untreated bamboo fibres "did not exhibit antibacterial activity" without additional chemical treatment. The antimicrobial properties sometimes attributed to bamboo sheets do not survive the manufacturing process.

The FTC has taken enforcement action against retailers making unsubstantiated antimicrobial and environmental claims on bamboo viscose products. The issue is not that bamboo viscose is a bad fabric. It is that the specific claims made for it, hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, naturally derived, are applied to a product that does not behave the way those claims imply.

Lyocell (sold under the Tencel brand) is a different fibre produced through a closed-loop solvent process that is genuinely more environmentally efficient than viscose manufacturing. Its smooth, round fibre cross-section may reduce surface area for particle trapping compared to cotton's irregular profile. No peer-reviewed study has tested lyocell versus cotton for dust mite allergen accumulation in sleeping environments, so the allergen performance claim cannot be confirmed. It is a reasonable hypothesis that the smooth surface performs somewhat better, but the evidence does not exist to support the claim specifically.

Wash Temperature: The 55-60°C Threshold

This is the most impactful variable for allergen control, and it is also the most ignored in marketing material.

A controlled study (PMID 18592823) tested dust mite survival and allergen removal across washing temperatures. At 30°C, only 6.5% of mites were killed and 26.8% of allergen remained. At 40°C, 9.6% of mites were killed and 2.4% of allergen remained. At 60°C, 100% of mites were killed and only 1.3% of allergen remained.

An earlier foundational study (PMID 1401643) established the mechanism distinction: cold washing removes allergen protein through physical extraction but leaves live mites. The surviving mites repopulate the bedding after washing. Hot washing (55°C or above) kills the mites themselves, removing both the immediate allergen source and the ongoing allergen production. For effective allergen control, 55-60°C is the minimum.

This creates a practical challenge: many sheet fabrics, particularly viscose and bamboo viscose, are care-labelled for cold or warm washing. A "hypoallergenic" bamboo sheet that can only be washed at 30°C will have more allergen present after weekly washing than a standard cotton sheet washed at 60°C.

Dorothy, sleep specialist: "When customers come in asking about hypoallergenic sheets for a family member with asthma, the first thing I tell them is to check the care label. If the sheets can only be washed cold, the marketing claim is doing a lot of work that the product isn't doing. The washing temperature matters more than the fibre name, honestly."

Additional notes from washing research (PMID 12789228): allergen removal improves significantly with detergent compared to water alone. Bleach plus detergent removes up to 98% of allergen. Mites can transfer between items washed together in the same load, so heavily infested bedding should be washed separately.

What to Actually Buy and Do

The evidence points to a specific set of practices that are more effective than any sheet fibre claim:

  1. Use allergen-barrier covers on mattress and pillows. These are separate products from sheets, purpose-engineered to tested pore sizes. They are the most evidence-backed single intervention for dust mite allergen reduction in the sleeping environment.
  2. Choose sheets you can wash at 55-60°C. Pure cotton holds up to hot washing better than viscose or bamboo viscose blends. Check the care label before purchasing.
  3. Wash sheets weekly. Allergen accumulation is continuous. Weekly washing at the right temperature prevents the population from rebuilding to levels that trigger symptoms.
  4. Use detergent, not just water. Allergen extraction with detergent is significantly more complete than with water alone.
  5. For fibre preference beyond allergen control: Cotton is the most documented for tolerability in atopic skin. Lyocell/Tencel has a reasonable surface profile but unconfirmed allergen advantages over cotton. Bamboo viscose offers no confirmed benefit over cotton for allergy control despite premium pricing.
