An isochronic tone is a single audio frequency (say, 200 Hz) that pulses on and off at a regular rate (say, 8 times per second, or 8 Hz). The pulse rate is what matters. The theory behind the technology, called brainwave entrainment, holds that the brain's electrical activity will synchronise to the pulse rate, so a track pulsing at 8 Hz should nudge the brain toward alpha-wave activity (relaxation), and a track pulsing at 2 Hz should nudge toward delta (deep sleep).

The theory is plausible on paper. Certain brainwave frequencies correspond to certain mental states. The brain does sometimes sync to rhythmic external stimuli. Whether audio pulses at consumer volumes meaningfully sync the brain at a therapeutic level is a different question. That is the one the research is still trying to answer.

Current research state

A 2023 systematic review of 14 brainwave-entrainment studies (summarised on PubMed) found only 5 showed supportive evidence for entrainment via binaural beats or isochronic tones. A 2021 study reported that 40 Hz binaural beats appeared to improve attention but did not show the expected EEG entrainment pattern. Most research suffers from small sample sizes, inadequate placebo controls, and high individual variability. The Canadian Sleep Society and the Sleep Foundation both treat brainwave entrainment as an emerging, unproven area. No sleep-medicine clinical guidelines currently include isochronic tones as a recommended intervention.

  • Verdict: Partially true. Isochronic tones have practical advantages (speaker use, simpler delivery) but are not better-validated than binaural beats. If anything, they are less-studied.
