A 2020 study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry (PMC7330166) found something that most mattress articles ignore: couples who share a bed have significantly more and more stable REM sleep than when they sleep alone, even accounting for the fact that co-sleeping also produces more micro-arousals from partner movement. The social signals of sleeping in proximity appear to actively support the deepest, most restorative sleep stage in ways that solitary sleep does not.
This matters for how we think about motion isolation. The goal is not to replicate the physical isolation of two separate beds. It is to preserve the co-sleeping benefit (better REM) while reducing the specific mechanism of disruption (physical motion transfer during deep sleep stages 3 and 4).
The REM Paradox: Why Bed-Sharing Actually Helps Sleep
The Frontiers in Psychiatry study (PMC7330166) brought 12 couples into a sleep laboratory and had them spend nights sleeping together and separately. Polysomnography measured sleep stage architecture in both conditions. Bed-sharing increased REM sleep duration and stability. Interestingly, the researchers found that couples' sleep stages also became more synchronised when sharing a bed, meaning both partners tended to enter and exit each stage at similar times.
A 2026 systematic review in Sleep Health journal examined partner disturbance across multiple co-sleeping studies and confirmed that motion transfer is associated with increased Stage 1 sleep (light sleep) and decreased Stage 3/4 sleep (deep restorative sleep). So the motion component is real and harmful. But the relational component is simultaneously beneficial. You need both things to be true when choosing a strategy for couples' sleep.
What the Research Tells Us
The practical conclusion from the research is this: sleeping in separate beds to eliminate motion transfer is a less effective strategy than improving motion isolation on a shared mattress. Separate beds eliminate the REM benefit of co-sleeping while solving the motion problem. A mattress with good motion isolation preserves the REM benefit while reducing the disturbance that undermines deep sleep. Earlier research published in SLEEP journal and indexed on PubMed (PMID 10544418) on lateral motion transfer in sleep found that mattresses with poor isolation produced measurable increases in Stage 1 sleep at the expense of slower-wave stages, consistent with the pattern in the systematic review.
How Motion Transfers Across a Mattress
Motion transfers through a mattress in two ways: through the support core and through the comfort layer.
Support core transfer is the more dramatic mechanism. In a traditional open-coil or Bonnell spring system, the coils are connected by helical wires that run the length and width of the mattress. When one coil compresses, it pulls adjacent coils through the connecting wires. A significant movement on one side of the mattress creates a wave that propagates across the full width of the spring unit within fractions of a second.
Comfort layer transfer is subtler. Even a mattress with an isolated coil system transmits some motion through the foam or fibre comfort layer above it, particularly if that layer is thin or low-density. The energy of a movement travels outward from the point of impact, and a thin layer provides little resistance before it reaches the mattress surface. A deep, dense comfort layer absorbs more of this energy locally before it can ripple outward.

Bonnell Coils
Bonnell coils are the oldest and least expensive coil design. They have an hourglass shape and are connected to each other by helical wires, forming a single interconnected spring unit across the mattress. Motion transfer is high. Pressing down on any area causes deflection across the entire connected system. Bonnell coils are still found in entry-level mattresses and older hotel beds. Continuous Coils
Continuous coil systems are made from a single wire that runs back and forth across the mattress in a series of S-shapes. Like Bonnell systems, they are structurally connected across the sleep surface, and motion propagates laterally. Pocketed Coils (Individually Wrapped)
Pocketed coils are each encased in a separate fabric pocket. Because there is no direct mechanical connection between coils, each one responds independently to weight. Why Comfort Layer Depth Matters
Even on a high-count pocketed coil system, a thin comfort layer allows surface motion to transfer more than a thicker one. The comfort layer sits between you and the coils and acts as a buffer. Energy from a movement travels through it before reaching the coil zone, and some is absorbed in the process.
A 5-7 cm comfort layer in a hybrid mattress absorbs significantly more surface motion than a 2 cm quilted top. Memory foam comfort layers absorb more energy per centimetre than standard polyfoam because of their viscoelastic properties. Latex comfort layers are similar to memory foam in isolation performance but respond faster to pressure changes, which benefits combination sleepers.

Does Mattress Size Affect Isolation?
Physical distance is the simplest motion isolation mechanism. A king mattress places two sleeping bodies approximately 40 cm further apart than a queen, which means a movement must travel a greater distance through more mattress material before reaching the other side.
This matters in practice. For a couple where one partner wakes easily and the other tosses and turns throughout the night, a king mattress with moderate isolation can outperform a queen mattress with better isolation specs, because the additional width provides a buffer that no coil configuration can replicate at smaller dimensions.
The trade-off is bedroom size. A standard king mattress is 193 x 203 cm. In many Brantford homes with secondary bedrooms repurposed as master suites, fitting a king with comfortable clearance on three sides requires 3.6 m x 3.6 m of floor space at minimum.
