The average adult loses roughly 240 ml of water (a full cup) per night through perspiration and exhalation. For menopausal women experiencing night sweats, athletes with elevated metabolic rates, or anyone sleeping in a warm bedroom, that number can easily double.

Research on thermoregulation and sleep consistently shows that ambient surface temperature and moisture retention affect sleep quality. A 2023 study published in the Journal of Building and Environment (ScienceDirect) found that each 1°C increase in sleeping surface temperature reduced deep sleep by approximately 9 minutes in males and 10 minutes in females. Moisture sitting in the sheet fabric elevates the perceived skin temperature even when the room itself is cool, because damp fabric conducts heat differently than dry fabric.

This is why sheet material matters. A cotton percale sheet soaked with sweat at 2 a.m. is physically warmer against the skin than a dry Tencel sheet at the same temperature.   • Tencel (lyocell): Made from eucalyptus pulp using a closed-loop solvent process. Extremely smooth fibre with natural moisture-absorbing properties; can absorb up to 50 percent of its weight in moisture and release it quickly. Feels silky to the touch, drapes well, resists bacteria growth. Our top recommendation for most Canadian households. $150 to $350 CAD for a quality queen set.
  • Bamboo viscose: Derived from bamboo pulp through a viscose process. Softer than cotton, breathable, naturally antibacterial. Wicks well but not quite as efficiently as Tencel, and lower-quality bamboo blends can pill. $100 to $250 CAD for a queen set.
  • Linen: Woven from flax fibres. Hollow fibre structure absorbs up to 20 percent of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. Textured rather than smooth, which some people love and some don't.   • Long-staple cotton percale (Egyptian or Pima): Crisp, hotel-style weave. Breathes well but wicks less actively than Tencel or bamboo. If you're choosing a single best-all-around option, Tencel is the one we'd point most customers toward. It handles Canadian humidity extremes well in both directions, it's durable, it washes reliably, and it feels good against the skin.

The Polyester Performance Question

Performance polyester "cooling" or "moisture-wicking" sheets are a separate category, and the honest take is mixed.

Engineered polyester fabrics (the kind used in athletic wear) genuinely wick moisture fast because they don't absorb it; they push it to the outside surface where it evaporates. This is a different mechanism than natural-fibre wicking, where the fibre itself absorbs and then releases moisture. Polyester can feel dry against the skin even when actively sweating.

The downsides: polyester feels different from natural fibre (slicker, sometimes described as "plasticky"), holds body odour more readily, and doesn't breathe the way natural fibres do. Once body temperature drops and the sheet cools, polyester can feel cold against the skin in a way natural fibres don't.

For a hot sleeper who specifically wants athletic-style moisture management and doesn't mind the hand feel, quality performance polyester (not cheap polyester marketed as "cooling") can work well. For most buyers, natural fibre with real wicking properties is the better general answer.

Thread Count, GSM, and What's Marketing

Thread count has been marketed into meaninglessness on sheets. Here's the actual situation:

  • Cotton percale: 200 to 400 thread count is the useful range. Above 400, manufacturers often use two-ply or three-ply yarns, which inflate the number without improving the fabric.
  • Cotton sateen: 300 to 600 thread count. A heavier weave than percale, which is why it feels silkier but less crisp.
  • Tencel and bamboo: Thread count is less relevant because the fibre itself is smoother than cotton. GSM (grams per square metre) is a better indicator. Good Tencel sheets run 120 to 300 GSM.
  • Linen: Thread count doesn't apply. GSM is the relevant measure, and 160 to 200 GSM is the sleep-sheet range.

If a sheet set is advertising a thread count above 800 on packaging, ask follow-up questions. A 1,200-thread-count sheet is almost always using fibre-quality tricks that don't improve actual performance.

Canadian Climate Considerations

What Southern Ontario Nights Do to Sheets

Brantford summers run hot and humid, with overnight humidity regularly above 70 percent in July and August. A cotton percale sheet in these conditions absorbs sweat and doesn't release it quickly. We see customers come back for sheet upgrades specifically after their first hot July night on cotton.

Winters are the opposite: forced-air heating creates bedroom humidity below 30 percent RH. Sweat evaporates quickly in dry winter air, so wicking matters less. This is why many Canadian households genuinely benefit from two sheet sets: lighter-weight wicking sheets (Tencel, linen) for summer, and slightly heavier cotton flannel for winter.

For year-round one-set households, Tencel handles both extremes better than almost anything else. It's not as warm as flannel in winter but it's not uncomfortably cool either, and it's dramatically more comfortable than cotton in summer humidity.

What to Look For When Buying

  1. Fabric content on the label. "Tencel lyocell" or "bamboo viscose" should be stated explicitly, ideally with the percentage (100 percent is best). Blends with polyester reduce wicking proportionally.
  2. OEKO-TEX or similar certification. Natural-fibre sheets often undergo chemical processing (particularly viscose and lyocell). OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification confirms the finished fabric is free of harmful chemicals at levels relevant to skin contact.
  3. Weave specification. For cotton, percale for crisp-cool feel, sateen for silky-warm feel. For Tencel, look for "sateen weave Tencel" if you want the silkiest option, or "percale weave Tencel" for a crisper hand.
  4. Deep pocket depth. Modern mattresses run thicker than older ones. For a queen mattress of 14 inches or more, deep-pocket sheets (typically labelled 15 or 16 inches) prevent the fitted sheet from popping off corners.
  5. Pre-washing. Natural fibre sheets often shrink slightly on first wash. Pre-washed sheets on the label is a small but real quality signal.
  6. Wash and care. Machine-washable in cold to warm water is essential for real-world use. Sheets requiring specialty care get washed less often, and unwashed sheets accumulate body oils and skin cells that interfere with wicking.

Are bamboo sheets really antimicrobial?

Modern bamboo sheets have a small intrinsic antimicrobial advantage over cotton, but the marketing claims often go further than the evidence.
