What Is a Box Spring?
A box spring is a wooden frame with a spring grid inside, covered in fabric. It sits between the bed frame rails and the mattress, adding height and providing a degree of give (bounce) under the mattress. Box springs were the standard support system for the traditional innerspring mattresses that dominated the market through most of the 20th century.
The springs inside a box spring absorb some of the load placed on the mattress, theoretically reducing wear. In practice, the real benefits of a traditional box spring were height (getting the mattress to a comfortable getting-in-and-out height) and the bouncing feel that traditional innerspring sleepers preferred.
What Is a Foundation?
A foundation (also called a semi-flex foundation, flat foundation or platform foundation) looks similar to a box spring from the outside but has a solid or minimally-flexing interior , no spring mechanism. It provides height and a stable support surface without adding any give.
Foundations are the transitional product: they give you the height of a box spring while providing the stable surface that modern foam and hybrid mattresses need. Many mattress warranties require the mattress to be used on a "rigid, non-flexible surface," which a foundation satisfies but a traditional box spring may not.
Do You Still Need a Box Spring?
The short answer is: it depends entirely on the mattress and the bed frame.

Memory Foam and Latex
These mattresses require a rigid, stable support. A traditional box spring's spring mechanism can create uneven support points under foam, causing the foam to deform over time in patterns that mirror the spring grid beneath. Most foam and latex mattress warranties explicitly state that using a box spring voids the warranty. Use a solid platform, slatted surface with appropriate spacing, or a flat foundation.
Hybrid Mattresses (Pocketed Coil)
Modern hybrid mattresses like Restonic's Revive line use individually wrapped pocketed coils, not the rigid interconnected coil systems of traditional innersprings. These are designed for platform bases. While some hybrid manufacturers allow a flat foundation, using a traditional spring box spring is generally not recommended and may not be covered under warranty.
Traditional Innerspring
Traditional innersprings with Bonnell or continuous coil systems are genuinely designed to work with a box spring. The box spring provides the shock absorption layer that the mattress system was engineered around. If you have a traditional innerspring and an old-style metal rail frame, keep the box spring.
Low-Profile Box Springs
If you're replacing an older innerspring system and want to maintain a lower bed height, low-profile box springs are available. Standard box springs are typically 9 inches tall; low-profile versions run 5–6 inches. This reduces the total bed height while still providing the support appropriate for traditional innerspring mattresses.
Low-profile box springs are also an option when an older couple or someone with limited mobility finds the standard height difficult to get in and out of. Adding a low-profile box spring to an existing setup, rather than replacing the full support system, can reduce total mattress height by 3–4 inches.
A Common Brantford Question
We've been answering this question in Brantford since foam mattresses became mainstream in the early 2000s. Back then, almost everyone had an old metal rail frame and a box spring. As foam mattresses took over, the question became: do I need to replace my whole setup or just the mattress? Will using the wrong support void my mattress warranty?
