Throughout the day, your brain accumulates a chemical called adenosine. Think of adenosine as a slowly filling bathtub of sleepiness. The longer you are awake, the more adenosine builds up, and the more pressure you feel to sleep. By evening, the tub is full, and your body says: time for bed.

Caffeine does not give you energy. What it does is block the adenosine receptors in your brain, essentially plugging the drain so the sleepiness signal cannot get through. The adenosine is still there, still accumulating. You just cannot feel it. When the caffeine eventually wears off and those receptors open up again, all that backed-up adenosine floods in at once. That is the crash.

Why This Matters for Sleep: During sleep, your brain clears out adenosine, which is part of why you feel refreshed in the morning.
