Can You Wash a Mattress Topper? Step-by-Step Instructions by Material

Quick Answer: It depends on the material. Polyester and down-alternative toppers are usually machine washable. Memory foam and latex toppers should never go in the washing machine because the agitation will damage the foam. These need spot cleaning and baking soda deodorising instead. Always check the care label first, as instructions vary by manufacturer.

Reading Time: 7 minutes

Your mattress topper sits directly under your sheets, absorbing sweat, body oils, and the occasional spill for months at a time. At some point, you are going to want to wash it. The question of whether you can wash a mattress topper does not have a single answer, because the right approach depends entirely on what the topper is made of.

Get it wrong and you can destroy a perfectly good topper in a single wash cycle. Get it right and your topper stays fresh for years. Here is what we recommend based on the topper types we sell and service at our Brantford showroom.

Quick Reference: Can You Wash It?

Topper Material Machine Washable? Recommended Cleaning Method
Memory foam No Spot clean, baking soda, vacuum
Latex No Spot clean with damp cloth, air dry
Polyester fibrefill Yes (gentle cycle) Machine wash cool, tumble dry low
Down alternative Yes (gentle cycle) Machine wash cool, tumble dry low with dryer balls
Feather and down Yes (large capacity machine) Machine wash cool, tumble dry low with tennis balls
Wool Not recommended Spot clean, air out regularly, professional clean
Bamboo (with foam core) Cover only Remove cover and machine wash; spot clean foam

Memory Foam Toppers

Can You Wash a Mattress Topper? Step

This is the most important one to get right because memory foam is the most common topper material and the most easily ruined in the wash.

Never put a memory foam topper in the washing machine. The agitation cycle will tear, crumble, or permanently deform the foam. Even a gentle cycle creates too much mechanical stress for the foam structure. Once damaged, memory foam does not recover.

How to Clean Memory Foam

For odours: Strip the topper and lay it flat. Sprinkle baking soda generously across the entire surface. Let it sit for at least 8 hours (overnight is ideal). The baking soda absorbs moisture and neutralises odours. Vacuum the surface thoroughly with a soft brush attachment. Flip and repeat on the other side if needed.

For stains: Mix a small amount of mild liquid dish soap with cool water. Dampen a clean white cloth with the solution. Dab the stain gently, working from the outside edges inward. Do not saturate the foam. Blot with a dry cloth to absorb excess moisture. Let the area air dry completely before putting sheets back on. This may take several hours.

For spills: Blot immediately with dry towels. Press firmly to absorb as much liquid as possible. Then follow the stain treatment above. If a large area is wet, stand the topper on its side near a fan or open window to speed drying. Memory foam retains moisture deep inside, so it can take 24 hours or more to dry fully.

Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "The biggest mistake I see with foam toppers is people trying to speed up drying with a hair dryer or putting them near a heater. Direct heat damages memory foam the same way it damages the foam inside a mattress. Let it air dry. If it takes a day, it takes a day."

Latex Toppers

Latex toppers share the same "no machine washing" rule as memory foam, but for slightly different reasons. Natural latex is resilient and will not crumble the way memory foam does, but it absorbs water readily and becomes extremely heavy when wet. A water-saturated latex topper can weigh three to four times its dry weight, making it nearly impossible to handle and very slow to dry.

Spot clean latex toppers with a damp cloth and mild soap. For deeper cleaning, wipe down the surface with a cloth dampened in a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. The vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant without leaving chemical residue.

Latex is naturally antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites, so it generally requires less frequent cleaning than other materials. If you have a bamboo-covered latex topper, the cover is usually removable and machine washable.

Polyester and Down-Alternative Toppers

Good news: these are the easiest toppers to wash. Most polyester and down-alternative toppers are fully machine washable.

Washing Polyester and Down-Alternative Toppers

  1. Check the care label to confirm machine washing is safe
  2. Use a large-capacity washing machine (home machines may be too small for king-size toppers)
  3. Set to gentle or delicate cycle with cool water
  4. Use a mild liquid detergent, not powder (powder can clump in the fill)
  5. Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent
  6. Tumble dry on low heat with two or three clean tennis balls or dryer balls to prevent clumping
  7. Check that the topper is completely dry before putting it back on the bed

If the topper is too large for your home machine, a commercial laundromat with oversized front-loading machines is the next best option. Avoid top-loading agitator machines, which can tear the stitching.

Feather and Down Toppers

Feather and down toppers can be machine washed, but they require more care during drying to prevent the fill from clumping into lumps.

Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water with a small amount of down-specific detergent or mild liquid soap. The critical step is drying: tumble dry on the lowest heat setting with three tennis balls or wool dryer balls. The balls break up clumps of wet down as the topper tumbles. This drying process can take two to three hours. Remove the topper periodically and fluff it by hand to redistribute the fill.

A down topper that is not fully dry will develop a musty smell within days. Make absolutely certain it is dry all the way through before returning it to the bed.

Wool Toppers

Wool is the trickiest material to wash because it felts (shrinks and hardens) when exposed to heat, agitation, or sudden temperature changes. Machine washing a wool topper will almost certainly ruin it.

For regular maintenance, simply air out your wool topper every few months. Remove it from the bed and hang it outdoors on a dry day, or drape it over a drying rack near an open window. Sunlight is a natural disinfectant for wool.

For stains, spot clean with cold water and a wool-safe detergent. Blot, never rub. If the topper needs a thorough cleaning, professional dry cleaning is the safest option.

Stain Removal Basics

Regardless of topper type, these principles apply to stain treatment.

Rule Why It Matters
Act immediately Fresh stains are dramatically easier to remove than set stains
Blot, never rub Rubbing pushes stains deeper into the material and spreads the affected area
Use cold water on biological stains Hot water sets protein stains (blood, urine, sweat) permanently
Test cleaning solutions first Apply to a small hidden area and wait 10 minutes before treating the stain
Dry completely before re-covering Trapped moisture leads to mould and mildew growth inside the topper

For enzyme-based stains (urine, blood, sweat), an enzymatic cleaner from a pet store works better than general household cleaners. These products contain biological enzymes that break down organic matter rather than just masking it.

Keeping Your Topper Clean Longer

The best way to deal with a dirty topper is to prevent it from getting dirty in the first place.

A washable mattress protector placed over your topper catches spills, sweat, and oils before they reach the topper surface. The protector is far easier to wash than the topper itself, especially if you have a memory foam or latex topper that cannot be machine washed.

Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "I always recommend the layering approach: mattress, then topper, then protector, then fitted sheet. The protector takes the daily wear and gets washed every month or two. The topper underneath stays clean much longer. It is a simple habit that saves you from wrestling with a king-size foam topper in the bathtub."

Additional tips:

  • Wash your sheets weekly to reduce the amount of oil and sweat reaching lower layers
  • Vacuum the topper surface every time you flip or rotate your mattress
  • Air out the topper for a few hours whenever you strip the bed for washing
  • Keep the bedroom well ventilated, especially in Brantford's humid summer months, to reduce moisture accumulation

Most mattress toppers can be spot cleaned and deodorized, but only polyester and down-alternative toppers are fully machine washable, while memory foam and latex toppers will break apart in a washing machine and must be hand cleaned with mild detergent and air dried flat. Mattress Miracle at 441½ West Street in Brantford carries mattress toppers and protectors. Brad recommends always using a washable mattress protector over your topper to reduce the need for deep cleaning, as prevention is far easier than trying to clean a foam topper after a spill. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put a memory foam topper in the washing machine?

No. The agitation cycle in a washing machine will tear, crumble, or permanently deform memory foam. Memory foam toppers must be spot cleaned by hand or surface cleaned with baking soda and a vacuum. If your topper has a removable cover, that cover is usually machine washable, but the foam itself should never go in the machine.

How do you get the smell out of a new mattress topper?

Unpack the topper in a well-ventilated room and let it air out for 24 to 72 hours before use. If the smell persists, sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface, let it sit for 8 to 12 hours, then vacuum it off. Baking soda absorbs volatile organic compounds that cause the new foam smell. Most off-gassing dissipates within a week.

How often should you clean a mattress topper?

Do a basic baking soda deodorising treatment every two to three months. Spot clean stains as they happen. If you use a mattress protector over your topper, you can extend the interval between deep cleanings since the protector catches most spills and body oils before they reach the topper.

Can you wash a bamboo mattress topper?

It depends on what the topper is actually made of. Most bamboo toppers have a bamboo-rayon fabric cover over a memory foam or polyester fill. The bamboo cover is usually machine washable on a gentle cycle with cool water. The foam or fill inside should be spot cleaned only. Check the care label to confirm whether the cover is removable.
