Quick Answer: You can start CBT-I training today using digital apps like Sleepio or SHUTi (somryst), which are clinically proven to be as effective as face-to-face therapy. In Ontario, you can also access free resources through the MindBeacon program or ask your GP for a referral to a sleep clinic for OHIP-covered assessments.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "We have been helping Brantford families sleep better since 1997. Every customer gets personal attention, honest advice, and the kind of follow-up service you just do not get from big box stores."
Reading Time: 4 minutes
You know you need to retrain your brain to sleep. You've read about CBT-I. But where do you actually go to get it?
At Mattress Miracle, we often refer customers to local resources. Many people think they need to pay $200/hour for a therapist, but some of the best tools are now digital and affordable (or free).
Digital CBT-I (dCBT-I): Apps That Work
These aren't just "meditation apps." They are rigorous, algorithm-driven therapy programs that act like a digital doctor.
1. Sleepio:
Features a virtual therapist named "The Prof." It customizes a 6-week plan based on your sleep diary. Clinical trials show it helps 76% of users achieve healthy sleep.
2. SHUTi (Somryst):
The first FDA-authorized prescription digital therapeutic. It focuses heavily on Sleep Restriction therapy. It is intense but effective.
3. CBT-i Coach (Free):
Developed by the VA (Veterans Affairs). It is a free app that guides you through the process. It is less interactive than Sleepio but contains all the necessary tools (diaries, education).
Free & Covered Options in Ontario

MindBeacon:
The Ontario government funds this digital therapy platform. It offers a 12-week guided CBT program with a real therapist messaging you. It is free for Ontario residents with a health card.
Sleep Clinics:
Ask your family doctor for a referral to a sleep clinic (like the one at Brantford General or in Hamilton). The initial consultation and sleep study are covered by OHIP. While they focus on apnea, many sleep doctors can guide you toward CBT-I resources.
The 6-Week Curriculum
Whether you use an app or a person, the training follows this path:
- Week 1: Sleep Diary. You track exactly when you sleep and wake.
- Week 2: Restriction. You set a strict "sleep window" (e.g., 12 a.m. to 6 a.m.) to build sleep drive.
- Week 3-4: Stimulus Control. You learn to get out of bed if you aren't sleeping.
- Week 5: Cognitive Restructuring. You challenge thoughts like "If I don't sleep, I'll fail my job."
- Week 6: Relapse Prevention. Planning for future bad nights.
Building Your Sleep Support System

CBT-I is hard. The first two weeks of sleep restriction are exhausting. You need a team.
- Tell your partner: "I'm going to be tired and grumpy for two weeks. Please support me."
- Fix your environment: You cannot succeed if your bed is uncomfortable. If you are restricted to 6 hours in bed, those 6 hours must be comfortable.
The "Sanctuary" Rule
Brad advises customers starting CBT-I to treat their bedroom like a clinic. Remove the TV. Remove the clutter. Ensure your mattress is supportive. If your sleep environment is chaotic, your brain won't learn the lesson that "Bed = Calm."

Call 519-770-0001Is CBT-I better than pills?
Yes. Studies show CBT-I is more effective than medication in the long term (6+ months). Pills stop working when you stop taking them; CBT-I gives you skills for life.
Can I do it without a therapist?
Yes, using the apps listed above. However, if you have other conditions (bipolar disorder, seizure disorder), you should do it under medical supervision as sleep restriction can trigger episodes.
How much does Sleepio cost?
It varies, but typically around $400-$500 for a year subscription. While not cheap, it is cheaper than 10 sessions with a psychologist.
Will OHIP cover a CPAP machine?
OHIP covers 75% of the cost of a CPAP machine if you are diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea by a certified sleep lab. CBT-I is for insomnia, not apnea, but they often occur together.
