What You Actually Pay For With Tempur-Pedic

Tempur-Pedic mattresses have one genuinely unique feature: TEMPUR material, a proprietary viscoelastic foam originally developed from NASA research in the 1970s. That history is real. The foam is real. What's debatable is whether that foam is worth two to four times more than high-quality alternatives.

Here's what the price breaks down to in Canada for a queen:

You can't buy Tempur-Pedic directly from their website in Canada. You have to go through a retailer, which means Tempur-Pedic prices vary by store. Sleep Country, The Brick, and Leon's all carry the line. Each adds their own margin on top of what Tempur Sealy charges wholesale.

So part of what you're paying for is the TEMPUR foam. Another part is the brand. And another part is the retail chain's cut. Only one of those three things touches your back at night.

The Heat Problem Nobody Warns You About

Dense memory foam conforms to your body by responding to heat. It softens where you're warm and stays firm where you're cool. This is the "hugging" sensation Tempur-Pedic is known for.

Tempur Sealy, Somnigroup, and What It Means for Canadian Prices

In February 2025, Tempur Sealy International completed a $5 billion acquisition of Mattress Firm, the largest mattress retailer in the United States. The combined company rebranded as Somnigroup International.

Somnigroup now controls Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Stearns & Foster, and Mattress Firm under one corporate umbrella. The same company that makes the mattress also owns the stores that sell it in the U.S. market.

In Canada, the dynamic is slightly different. Sleep Country is the primary Tempur-Pedic retailer, and Sleep Country is a separate publicly traded company. But the consolidation trend is the same everywhere: fewer independent players, more corporate control, and prices that reflect shareholder expectations rather than manufacturing cost.

What "Cheaper" Actually Looks Like

The word "cheaper" implies lower quality. In mattresses, that's not always true. What you're often getting for less money is a different construction approach that achieves the same result through different materials.

Pocket Coil Hybrids vs All-Foam

Tempur-Pedic's core mattresses are all-foam. The support comes from high-density polyurethane base foam, and the comfort comes from TEMPUR material on top. There are no coils in most Tempur-Pedic models (the Hybrid line is the exception, at a further premium).

A pocket coil hybrid uses individually wrapped steel coils for support and foam or latex comfort layers on top. The coils provide natural airflow, responsive support, and edge stability that all-foam mattresses struggle with. The foam layers on top still give you pressure relief.

What About the "Feel"?

But slow-sink and pressure relief are different things. Pressure relief is about distributing your body weight evenly so no single point bears too much load. Pocket coils do this by independently compressing under heavier body parts and supporting lighter areas. The result is the same alignment benefit without the heat retention.

How to Test Alternatives in Person

The single best thing you can do before buying any mattress, Tempur-Pedic or otherwise, is lie on it for at least 15 minutes. Not two minutes. Not a quick sit on the edge. Fifteen minutes in your actual sleeping position.

Step 3: After 10 minutes, notice the temperature. Are you warm? On a pocket coil hybrid, you probably won't be. On dense memory foam, many people notice heat building within minutes.
