Every November, the same claim resurfaces: turkey makes you sleepy because it's loaded with tryptophan. It's a satisfying explanation. It has chemistry in it. It sounds true.

The actual story is more interesting than the myth. Tryptophan does exist in turkey. It is a real sleep-related chemical. And it genuinely does convert into melatonin through a well-understood pathway. The problem is that turkey doesn't contain meaningfully more tryptophan than dozens of other common foods, and the reason you feel drowsy after a large meal has more to do with what you ate alongside the turkey than the turkey itself.

What Is Tryptophan?

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, which means your body cannot synthesise it and must obtain it from food. It's present in most protein-containing foods, meat, dairy, eggs, seeds, legumes, in varying amounts. Your body uses it for several purposes, but the one relevant to sleep is its role as a precursor to serotonin.

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. When you eat a protein-containing meal, your body digests it into its component amino acids, which then enter the bloodstream and eventually cross the blood-brain barrier to perform their functions. Tryptophan's most notable function in the brain is the first step in the biosynthesis of serotonin.

The Tryptophan-to-Melatonin Pathway

The conversion sequence works like this: dietary tryptophan is absorbed from the gut into the bloodstream. It crosses the blood-brain barrier via a specific transport mechanism. Inside neurons, it's converted by the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase to 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), which is then converted to serotonin. In the pineal gland, serotonin is further converted to N-acetylserotonin and then to melatonin, the primary hormone signal for darkness and sleep timing. This pathway is real, well-characterised, and physiologically important, the question is whether eating turkey meaningfully activates it.

How Tryptophan Becomes Serotonin and Melatonin

The serotonin-melatonin synthesis pathway is fundamental to circadian biology. Melatonin production in the pineal gland is regulated primarily by light, not by diet: darkness triggers the conversion of serotonin to melatonin, which is why exposure to bright light in the evening delays sleep onset even if you've eaten a tryptophan-rich meal.

That said, there is research showing that dietary tryptophan supplementation at therapeutic doses can increase serotonin precursor availability and has some effect on sleep latency and mood. A 2009 review in the International Journal of Tryptophan Research documented that L-tryptophan at doses of 1–15 grams can reduce sleep latency in healthy subjects, with effects on REM sleep at higher doses. The effective dose range is notably higher than what you'd get from a typical serving of turkey.

Why Turkey Isn't Actually Special for Sleep

Here's where the myth falls apart. A 100-gram serving of roasted turkey contains approximately 303 milligrams of tryptophan. That sounds significant until you compare it to other common foods:

Turkey sits in the middle of the pack. Pumpkin seeds contain nearly twice as much tryptophan per 100 grams. Pork loin has more. You don't hear people blaming a cheese board for post-snack somnolence, and with good reason.

Beyond the quantity issue, there's a pharmacokinetic problem. Tryptophan competes with other large neutral amino acids for the same blood-brain barrier transport mechanism. When you eat a protein-containing meal, all amino acids flood the bloodstream simultaneously. Tryptophan can't preferentially cross into the brain because it's competing with multiple other amino acids for the same transporter. The net effect on brain tryptophan levels is modest at best after a protein-rich meal.

What Really Causes Post-Meal Sleepiness

The actual causes of post-meal drowsiness are more prosaic than a single sleep chemical:

1. Carbohydrate Volume

Here's where tryptophan science becomes relevant again, but with a twist. When you eat carbohydrates, your pancreas releases insulin to manage blood glucose. Insulin causes most amino acids to be taken up by muscle tissue, but tryptophan is somewhat protected from this uptake. The result is that after a high-carbohydrate meal, the ratio of tryptophan to competing amino acids in the bloodstream actually increases, making it easier for tryptophan to cross the blood-brain barrier.

This is the legitimate tryptophan-sleep connection: carbohydrates consumed alongside protein effectively give tryptophan a transportation advantage into the brain. The Thanksgiving meal is carbohydrate-dense (stuffing, potatoes, bread, pie), and that carbohydrate load is what actually facilitates the tryptophan-to-serotonin pathway more than the turkey itself.

2. Overall Meal Volume

Simply eating a very large meal redirects significant blood flow to the digestive system. This is a real physiological effect: the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest") takes precedence after a large meal, which reduces alertness and promotes a drowsy state. No specific chemical needed.

3. Alcohol
