Quick Answer: Your mattress type determines your cleaning method. Memory foam requires a light spray of enzyme cleaner only, never soaking. Innerspring can tolerate a slightly wetter application but still needs thorough drying. Hybrid mattresses should be treated like memory foam because the foam comfort layers are moisture-sensitive.

Why Mattress Type Changes Everything
A common mistake when cleaning urine from a mattress is applying the same method regardless of construction. What works reasonably well on a traditional innerspring can cause real damage on a memory foam mattress. The materials are fundamentally different, and they respond differently to moisture.
Memory foam is a viscoelastic polyurethane foam with an open-cell structure. Those cells trap liquid. Once water or enzyme cleaner penetrates beyond the surface, it is extremely difficult to draw back out through drying alone. Excessive moisture breaks down the foam's cell structure over time, creating soft spots and, more urgently, creates conditions where mould grows inside the foam where you cannot see it.
Innerspring mattresses use steel coils as their support system, with fabric layers on top. While you still want to avoid soaking the fabric layers, the coil system itself is not moisture-sensitive in the same way foam is. There is more forgiveness for a wetter enzyme cleaner application, though you still need to dry the mattress thoroughly before covering it.
Hybrid mattresses combine both: a coil support core with foam comfort layers on top. That foam layer is what you need to protect, which is why hybrids should be treated like memory foam when it comes to moisture.
Cleaning Urine From Memory Foam
The guiding rule for memory foam: use as little liquid as possible while still applying enough enzyme cleaner to reach the affected area. This is a balance, and it requires discipline. The temptation is to saturate the stain the way you might a sofa cushion. Resist that.
Memory Foam Cleaning Steps
- Blot immediately. Press dry cloths firmly into the surface. Remove as much liquid as possible before doing anything else.
- Spray, do not pour. Use a spray bottle to apply enzyme cleaner. One or two light passes over the affected area. The goal is damp, not wet.
- Press in gently. Use a clean cloth to gently press the enzyme cleaner into the surface so it can penetrate slightly below the top layer.
- Wait 15-20 minutes. The enzymes need dwell time to work. Do not cover the mattress during this period.
- Blot again. Lift as much of the enzyme cleaner and broken-down urine compounds back out as possible.
- Apply baking soda immediately. Sprinkle a generous layer over the area. This helps draw out remaining moisture as the mattress dries.
- Dry aggressively. Point a fan directly at the mattress and run it for at least 4-6 hours. Do not cover the mattress until it is completely dry.
Memory foam drying note: Even after the surface feels dry to the touch, the foam underneath may still be damp. The standard advice from cleaning professionals is to leave the fan running for twice as long as you think is necessary. Covering a damp memory foam mattress with sheets is one of the most common causes of mould growth inside mattresses.

Cleaning Urine From Innerspring Mattresses
Traditional innerspring mattresses are more forgiving when it comes to moisture, but that does not mean soaking is harmless. The fabric layers on top can absorb a significant amount of liquid, and moisture that sits in the padding between the cover and the coils can still cause mould and odour problems.
Innerspring Cleaning Steps
- Blot thoroughly. The same first step regardless of mattress type. Get as much liquid out as possible before applying any cleaner.
- Apply enzyme cleaner more generously than with foam. You can apply with a cloth or sponge rather than just a spray bottle, allowing better penetration into the fabric layers.
- Work it in. Gently press the cleaner into the fabric. You want it to reach the padding where urine has likely soaked.
- Dwell time: 15-30 minutes. For older stains, go to 30 minutes or apply a second round.
- Blot, then apply baking soda. Same finish as with foam.
- Dry completely. The denser fabric layers in an innerspring can hold moisture longer than foam surfaces. Run a fan for at least 3-4 hours and check carefully before covering.
Cleaning Urine From Hybrid Mattresses
Hybrid mattresses have become one of the most popular choices in Brantford and across Ontario because they offer the pressure relief of foam combined with the support and airflow of coils. When it comes to cleaning urine, the foam comfort layer is what determines your approach.
Even if the coil layer could tolerate more moisture, the enzyme cleaner has to travel through the foam layer to get there. Any excess liquid you apply stays in that foam layer. So treat a hybrid exactly as you would treat a memory foam mattress: spray lightly, blot thoroughly, dry aggressively.
Comparison: Cleaning Methods by Mattress Type
| Mattress Type | Moisture Application | Enzyme Cleaner Method | Recommended Drying Time | Mould Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Memory Foam | Minimal (spray only) | Light spray, press gently | 4-8 hours with fan | High if over-wet |
| Innerspring | Moderate (cloth/sponge) | Sponge or spray with pressure | 3-5 hours with fan | Moderate |
| Hybrid | Minimal (spray only) | Light spray, press gently | 4-8 hours with fan | High if over-wet |
| Latex | Minimal (spray only) | Light spray, blot quickly | 3-6 hours with fan | Moderate (latex resists mould better) |
Drying Differences by Type
Memory foam dries slowly because the open cells hold moisture. Innerspring dries relatively faster because air can circulate around the coils. Hybrid falls somewhere in between. Latex, which is used in some premium mattresses, resists moisture absorption somewhat better due to its denser cell structure, but still needs thorough drying.
Regardless of mattress type, the steps for thorough drying are the same:
- Fan pointed directly at the cleaned area, running for several hours
- Open windows if outdoor humidity is below 60%
- Sunlight exposure if you can move the mattress near a window
- Check with your hand before putting sheets back on. If it feels even slightly cool, it is still damp inside.

When Cleaning Is No Longer Enough
Some accidents are too large or have gone undetected too long to fully remediate. Signs that your mattress may need replacement rather than cleaning include:
- A persistent musty or earthy smell that remains after multiple enzyme cleaner applications and thorough drying. This usually indicates mould inside the mattress.
- Soft spots or changes in foam texture where the accident occurred. Excessive moisture breaks down foam cell structure.
- Visible discolouration that does not respond to cleaning and continues to spread.
- Multiple significant accidents that have soaked through to deeper layers over time.
If you are not sure whether your mattress is worth salvaging, the team at Mattress Miracle can help you think it through. Brad has been helping Brantford families make these decisions since 1997. Can I use a steam cleaner on a memory foam mattress?
No. Steam introduces both heat and significant moisture. Heat can denature proteins and set stains. The moisture is very difficult to remove from foam and creates an ideal environment for mould. Avoid steam cleaners on any foam mattress.
My innerspring mattress still smells after cleaning. What should I do?
Apply a second round of enzyme cleaner, extending the dwell time to 30-45 minutes. The uric acid crystals may need a second enzymatic treatment to fully break down. After blotting, apply a fresh layer of baking soda and leave it overnight before vacuuming.
Is it worth cleaning a very old urine stain from a memory foam mattress?
Old, fully dried uric acid crystals require rehydration and extended enzyme treatment. Results vary. If the stain is more than a few days old, you may get significant improvement but not complete removal. An enzyme cleaner is still the right tool, but manage expectations accordingly.
Does the type of enzyme cleaner matter for different mattress types?
The enzyme formula matters more than the mattress type. Look for products containing protease, urease, and lipase regardless of which mattress type you have. The application method (spray vs sponge) changes by mattress type, but the enzyme formula itself is the same.
