What Is Closed Cell Foam?

Foam is a material made by trapping gas bubbles inside a solid polymer matrix. The critical variable is whether those bubbles are sealed or connected. In closed cell foam, each gas pocket is completely enclosed by a cell wall. The bubbles do not communicate with one another, and they do not communicate with the outside air.

In open cell foam, the cell walls are thin and partially broken. The internal structure looks more like a sponge under a microscope. Air and water can move freely through the material.

For a sleeping pad, closed cell foam offers three advantages that follow directly from that sealed structure:

  • Moisture resistance. Water cannot be absorbed because there is nowhere for it to go. Rain, dew, and condensation bead off the surface. The pad does not get heavier over a trip.
  • Thermal insulation. The sealed gas pockets trap air, which is a poor conductor of heat. Your body heat stays on your side of the pad.
  • Structural permanence. Closed cell foam does not compress and then fail to recover the way open cell foam eventually does. It can be sat on, rolled, accordion-folded, and strapped to the outside of a pack for fifteen years without meaningfully degrading.

The most common polymers used are cross-linked polyethylene (XPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). EVA tends to be denser and is used in higher-end pads. XPE is what most entry-level blue foam pads are made from. Both are closed cell. The difference is density, which affects weight, durability, and insulation value.

Why Cell Structure Determines Foam Performance

The thermal conductivity of still air is approximately 0.025 W/mK, which is among the lowest of any common material. Closed cell foam traps air in sealed pockets, preventing convection currents from carrying heat away. The denser the foam and the smaller the cells, the more effective the insulation. Closed Cell Foam: What It Does Well

  • Water resistance. Sealed cells mean no absorption. The pad stays the same weight whether it is raining or dry.
  • Durability. Cell walls do not break down easily. A quality closed cell pad lasts ten to twenty years with ordinary care.
  • Consistent insulation. Because the gas pockets are sealed, the insulation value does not degrade when the pad is compressed. It insulates whether you are lying on it or rolling it up.

Open Cell Foam: What It Does Well

On flat, smooth tent sites, a thin pad is adequate. On rocky or rooted ground, the lack of cushioning becomes more noticeable over the course of a night.

Three-Season Backpacking: 2 cm to 3 cm

This is the most common thickness for a standalone closed cell pad. A 2.5 cm pad typically delivers R-values in the 2.0 to 2.5 range and weighs around 400–450 grams. This is the comfortable middle ground for Ontario backpacking from May through October. The padding is enough for most terrain, and the insulation is adequate for three-season conditions.

Car Camping and Extended Base Camps: 3.8 cm to 5 cm

When weight is not a constraint, a thicker pad meaningfully improves comfort and pushes R-values toward R-3 or R-4. At 5 cm, a high-density EVA foam pad becomes genuinely comfortable for most sleepers.
