At a cottage, you are outdoors from morning through evening. You eat breakfast on the dock. You swim at midday. You sit outside through the afternoon. The light intensity outdoors on a cloudy day is still 10 to 50 times brighter than a well-lit indoor room. Here is the catch. An earlier circadian phase is genuinely healthy. Wright's research specifically demonstrated this. But it only works if you follow through. The findings were consistent across doses: alcohol reduces sleep onset latency (you fall asleep faster), increases slow-wave sleep in the first half of the night, then fragments sleep and suppresses REM in the second half. The onset of the first REM period is significantly delayed at all doses (Ebrahim et al., 2013).

A 2025 meta-analysis in Sleep Medicine Reviews confirmed a dose-response relationship: disruptions to REM sleep begin at just two standard drinks and worsen progressively with higher intake (Gardiner et al., 2025).

REM sleep is when your brain consolidates emotional memories, processes the day's experiences, and performs critical maintenance. Two beers by the campfire is enough to measurably reduce it. Three or four drinks, which is common during a relaxed cottage evening, will suppress REM sleep for most of the night.
