He even experimented with polyphasic sleep (breaking sleep into multiple short naps) before abandoning it because, in his own words, it was "for masochists."

So what actually holds up? We went through his main sleep recommendations and checked them against the research.

The Big Claim: You Can Hack Your Way to Needing Less Sleep

What the Research Says About Short Sleep

A genetic mutation in the DEC2 and ADRB1 genes allows some people to function well on six hours or less. But this mutation is exceptionally rare. The ADRB1 variant appears in roughly 4 out of every 100,000 people. While over 20 percent of the population sleeps close to six hours per night, only a small fraction of them carry the gene that makes it safe. The rest are simply sleep-deprived.

This is the centrepiece of Asprey's sleep philosophy, and it is also the most problematic. His argument goes like this: if you optimize sleep quality, you can compress your total sleep time and still perform at a high level.

He defines a good night's sleep as 90 minutes of deep sleep plus 90 minutes of REM. By that math, you could theoretically get all the sleep you need in under five hours.

The problem? Most sleep researchers disagree. Dr. Matthew Walker, neuroscientist and author of Why We Sleep, has been particularly direct: there is no scientific shortcut to needing less sleep. Your body uses different sleep stages for different repair processes, and those stages cycle throughout the night. Cutting hours means cutting cycles.

The proposed mechanism involves ketone production and blood sugar stabilization, but direct human studies on MCT oil improving sleep quality are virtually nonexistent. One 2023 animal study actually found that MCT-containing diets reduced REM sleep duration, which is the opposite of helpful.

Our verdict: Limited evidence. MCT oil may have other health benefits, but recommending it specifically as a sleep aid is ahead of the science. And yes, Asprey happens to sell it.

Collagen Peptides Before Bed

Asprey's claim: Taking 1 to 2 tablespoons of grass-fed collagen before bed improves sleep quality.

The evidence: This one is more nuanced than you might expect. Collagen is roughly 22 percent glycine by weight, and glycine does have legitimate sleep research behind it. A 15-gram collagen dose delivers about 3.5 grams of glycine, which is the amount shown in studies to improve subjective sleep quality and reduce sleep fragmentation. A 2023 randomized trial found that collagen supplementation reduced nighttime awakenings in physically active men with sleep complaints.

Our verdict: Weak but not baseless. The sleep benefit likely comes from the glycine content, not from collagen itself. You could get the same effect from a standalone glycine supplement for a fraction of the cost. Still, the mechanism is real.

Blue-Light Blocking Glasses

Asprey's claim: Wearing blue-light blocking glasses in the evening preserves melatonin production and helps you fall asleep faster.

The evidence: This is one of Asprey's stronger recommendations. The biological mechanism is well established: blue light suppresses melatonin, delays circadian phase, and prolongs the time it takes to fall asleep. Multiple systematic reviews support the use of blue-light blocking glasses, particularly for people with sleep difficulties, shift workers, and those with delayed sleep phase.

However, a 2025 Cochrane-style review noted that roughly half of randomized trials showed benefits while the other half did not. The glasses appear most helpful for people who already have sleep issues, and less impactful for healthy sleepers.

Our verdict: Supported with caveats. Blue-light management is real science. The glasses work best if you are sensitive to evening light exposure. They are not a magic fix for everyone.

Sleep Tracking with Wearables

Asprey's claim: Using devices like the Oura Ring to monitor your sleep stages lets you optimize for more deep sleep and REM.

The evidence: Sleep tracking can genuinely help you identify patterns. Understanding when you get your best sleep, what disrupts it, and how lifestyle changes affect your numbers is valuable. Asprey's emphasis on tracking deep sleep and REM percentages rather than just total hours is a reasonable approach.

The Orthosomnia Problem

Researchers coined the term "orthosomnia" in 2017 to describe patients who developed anxiety and insomnia from obsessing over their sleep tracker data. About 18 percent of sleep app users reported that tracking made them more worried about their sleep. People with existing insomnia were especially vulnerable. Consumer wearables also have poor accuracy at detecting wake periods and cannot reliably discriminate between sleep stages.

Our verdict: Supported, but use with caution. Track your sleep if it helps you make better decisions. Stop tracking if you find yourself lying awake worrying about your sleep score.
