Cortisol is your primary stress hormone. In healthy sleep, cortisol follows a natural arc: it is suppressed during the night, hits its lowest point around midnight, and begins rising toward morning to help you wake up. When sleep is poor, disrupted, or too warm, that arc gets distorted. Cortisol rises prematurely and stays elevated.
Elevated cortisol does several things that promote weight gain. It stimulates appetite, particularly for calorie-dense and carbohydrate-heavy foods. It promotes fat storage in the abdominal region, the visceral fat that carries the greatest metabolic health risk. It breaks down muscle tissue for energy. And it creates insulin resistance over time, making it harder for your cells to use glucose efficiently.
Sleep Loss, Cortisol, and Abdominal Fat
A study published in Sleep (Leproult & Van Cauter, 2010) demonstrated that even one week of mild sleep restriction, about five hours per night, elevated evening cortisol levels and reduced insulin sensitivity. The cortisol pattern in sleep-restricted participants resembled that seen in accelerated ageing. Separately, Spiegel et al. A 2000 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (Van Cauter et al.) demonstrated that middle-aged adults had significantly lower growth hormone secretion than younger adults, and that this reduction was closely tied to a parallel reduction in slow-wave sleep, not ageing itself.
