When Douglas launched in Canada, the mattress industry was just discovering that Canadians would buy a mattress without lying on it first. The pitch was simple: a generous trial period removes the risk. Ship the mattress compressed in a box, sleep on it for a few months, and return it if you hate it.

That pitch has gotten considerably more generous since those early days. Douglas now offers a 365-night sleep trial - enough time to test a mattress across every Canadian season. But what does that actually mean in practice? What are the conditions? Who does the pickup? How long does the refund take? And is a year-long trial really equivalent to knowing before you buy?

We looked at the actual policy documents, compared the return logistics, and weighed the trial against the alternative: walking into a showroom like ours in Brantford and sleeping on a mattress before it ever enters your home. Here is what we found.

What the 365-Night Trial Actually Covers

Douglas's sleep trial applies to all current mattress models. The trial window opens on the date your mattress is delivered and runs for 365 nights - a full calendar year. That means if you receive your mattress in March, your trial extends to the following March.

The trial covers the mattress only. Accessories like pillows, sheet sets, and mattress protectors that arrive as part of a bundle are typically not returnable after use. That is a common policy across DTC brands and worth noting if you are planning to use the "free bedding bundle" included with Summit-tier Douglas models.

There are no partial returns on split-size or adjustable-base combinations. If you ordered a king split and only want to return one half, you would need to contact Douglas directly - their policy page does not address this scenario explicitly.

The trial only applies to first-time purchases. Douglas's terms state that returns are available for original purchasers, not for mattresses that have been gifted or resold. If you bought a Douglas second-hand and it does not suit you, the trial does not apply.

The 30-Night Break-In Rule Explained

Here is the part that most "365-night trial" headlines leave out: you cannot return a Douglas mattress on night one, or night ten, or even night twenty-nine. Douglas requires a minimum 30-night break-in period before any return can be initiated.

This is not unusual. Most online mattress companies impose a mandatory trial minimum for the same reason: a new foam or hybrid mattress needs time to soften and conform to your body. Body impressions form, the cover relaxes, and the foam transitions from factory compression to its intended support profile. Judging a mattress in the first week is genuinely not representative of long-term comfort.

That said, there is another reason brands enforce break-in periods. Returns are expensive. The 30-night floor filters out impulse returns and gives the brand a defensible reason to decline return requests submitted too early.

If you sleep on your Douglas mattress for 32 nights and know it is wrong for your body, you can initiate a return. The full 365-night window is then available to you. You do not need to wait until month six or month twelve to decide.

Douglas does not have a self-serve return portal. You need to contact their customer service team first to initiate the process. Here is what the return looks like from start to finish:

One thing that is not obvious from the marketing: Douglas does not pick up your old mattress the way a delivery team might with a replacement. This is a distinct return pickup, not a swap. The people who come to collect the mattress are typically from a charity partner, a recycler, or a contracted local mover - not Douglas employees.

This matters because the pickup timing is not always fast. Availability depends entirely on what partners Douglas has in your city or town. In major centres like Toronto, Hamilton, or London, pickups tend to happen within a week or two. In smaller Ontario communities, the wait can be longer. Douglas's website notes that they will "arrange for someone within their network of local movers, charities, and community organisations across Canada" - language that honestly signals some variability in timing.

What "Free Pickup" Actually Means

Douglas advertises free returns, and to their credit, there genuinely are no fees charged to you. No restocking fee. No shipping charge. No "handling" deduction. The full purchase price is refunded.

But "free" in this context means something different from what some buyers assume. You are not being offered a white-glove removal service. You are being offered a charity or recycler pickup that Douglas coordinates on your behalf. The mattress goes to donation if it is in good condition, or to a recycling facility if not.

That is actually a better outcome than a landfill, and we do not say that critically. Mattress donation and recycling programs are a genuine environmental good. In practical terms: if your mattress is picked up on a Monday, expect to see the refund sometime the following week. If there are any discrepancies - wrong order number, questions about condition, delays in the partner confirming collection - that two-business-day clock does not start until those are resolved.

This is consistent with how most online retailers handle returns. It is not unusually slow, but it is not instant. Buyers who need the money available quickly to purchase a replacement should factor this in.

Who the Trial Period Works Best For

The 365-night trial offers genuine value for a specific type of buyer. It suits someone who:

• Has bought mattresses before and has a clear sense of what firmness and construction they prefer
• Lives in a major urban centre where pickup logistics are straightforward
• Is comfortable with the uncertainty of a compressed foam mattress unboxing experience
• Does not have particular body issues (back pain, joint pain, pressure point sensitivity) that make firmness-matching critical
• Is buying for a guest room or a secondary sleeping space where the stakes are lower

The trial period offers less value for buyers who:

• Are dealing with chronic back pain, sciatica, scoliosis, or other conditions where sleeping on the wrong mattress for weeks has real consequences
• Have never found the right firmness and genuinely need to feel the difference between a soft and a medium before committing
• Expect the return pickup to happen quickly in a rural or small-town Ontario location
• Find the return logistics - wrapping, scheduling, waiting - genuinely difficult to manage

A 2023 study in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services found that online return experiences significantly affect regret and repurchase intention. Buyers who had complicated return experiences were less likely to repurchase from the brand, even when the original product failed through no fault of the retailer. The return process is not just logistics. It is part of the purchase experience.

Trial Period vs Showroom Testing: An Honest Comparison

The honest argument for trying a Douglas mattress is price. At $799 for a queen (Douglas Original), you are getting a Canadian-made mattress with solid foam construction and a year to decide. That is a reasonable proposition. If the firmness works for you, the trial period is largely irrelevant - you will keep it.

The honest argument against relying on a trial period is that sleeping on the wrong mattress is not neutral. If someone with lower back pain orders a Douglas mattress that is too soft, and spends two months hoping the break-in period fixes it, that is two months of disrupted sleep with real health consequences. • Douglas Original Hybrid: $879 queen. Adds a pocketed coil system beneath the foam layers. Better edge support and airflow than the all-foam.
• Douglas Alpine: Mid-tier. Positioned between the Original and Summit for buyers who want more cooling than the Original but do not need the Summit's features.
• Douglas Summit (all-foam and hybrid): $1,079-$1,299 queen. Phase-change material in the cover, more foam layers, 15-year warranty. Includes a free bedding bundle (sheet set, duvet cover, duvet, pillows, protector).

All current models include the 365-night trial. The free bedding bundle that comes with Summit models is not part of the return - used bedding cannot be returned for hygiene reasons.

Douglas mattresses are compressed and shipped in a box. Unboxing and setup is a self-serve process. There is no delivery team, no old mattress removal, and no setup assistance included. If you live alone and have back problems, getting a compressed queen mattress off a front porch, up a staircase, and onto a bed frame is a realistic logistical question worth thinking about before you order.

Canadian Consumer Rights and Mattress Returns

Ontario's Consumer Protection Act, 2002 provides buyers with baseline protections, including the right to cancel certain contracts within defined windows. However, the Act's cooling-off provisions primarily apply to contracts solicited at your home (door-to-door sales) and do not create a general right to return any purchased product.

For online mattress purchases, your rights are largely governed by the retailer's own return policy - which is why reading that policy carefully matters. Douglas's 365-night trial goes well beyond what the law requires. They offer it voluntarily as a competitive feature, not as a legal obligation.

If a mattress arrives damaged or materially different from its description, Ontario consumer protection law and federal Sale of Goods Act provisions do offer additional recourse. Those situations are different from simply deciding you do not like the mattress. In practice, most reputable Canadian DTC brands handle defective products promptly without buyers needing to invoke statutory rights.
